Exactly. Most of Mumbaikars cannot afford Metro. But many of us are not aware about that. I mean when you can transport only 4-5 lakh people per day at the cost of 4000+ crore it gets a bit too much.
I doubt if any of us are opposing privatisation but not at the expense of public utilities. Another public utility they are destroying is MSEB.
So, just to get CM's post it was OK to compromise on the fundamental principles that Balasaheb had set up the party for? Already you can see the cracks developing. The CAB is going to be supported/abstained by SS where Cong+NCP will strongly oppose it. Euphoria of holding CM post may not last long as the pressure to change course for SS will be immense.
Those who can, have shifted to Metro and that does help in reducing pressure on the train services which will help those who can't afford it. Just observe how the crowds have reduced at Dadar after the Metro started.
Metro is not a replacement for suburban trains. It is for distributing the load better.

The same argument was made when PCs (computers) came into the market in the 90's. They would cost well over a lakh. The unions fought tooth and nail that it would kill jobs. If we had hesitated then, perhaps today we would not be among the top software producing countries giving jobs to millions.
IMHO when new technology comes it is going to be costly till the economies of scale are reached. If we don't adopt technologies in it's early phase we will struggle to catch up later. As change, we must.
Let us take another example. LED lighting has taken off in India. Initially LED bulbs used to cost Rs700 or more and we used to buy from China and sell them here. But the Govt. based EESL decided to promote manufacture in India with some strict norms. The volumes have shot up, the prices have come to as low as Rs 70 (even less when purchased through Electricity Boards). Today the cost of making LED bulbs in India is at par with China if not less. This has tremendously saved Power. If at the start we had decided that LEDs are elitist, we would have been the looser. Today, Chinese manufacturers admit that they can't beat India in manufacturing of LED bulbs on price and quality
I keep comparing with china because we started off on equal footing but look where China is today.
There is a Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) train which runs between Shanghai city and Shanghai airport at 450 KPMH noiselessly and without pollution (considered one of the fastest in the world). There are hardly any local people travelling by this. It could be called a white elephant. But building that has enabled China to take a lead in Rare earth magnets technology (also safety at high speeds) which is now the bedrock of Electric Vehicles, the next wave of transportation. Surely, one fine day, the world has to shift from fossil fuel driven cars. China has taken an early lead and that is helping them to reduce pollution and import of crude. Every technology has a spinoff which can help the masses in so many different ways.

@bold - True that and very apprehensive about it.

Yes agree . Elon musk is always getting a pushback from everywhere but the guy is quite relentless with his diverse projects. Most of them r overambitious but he is still at it though he is hardly appreciated by American media.
Any innovations take time patience n money but evens out in long run.
I wonder abt middle east as world is moving towards electric n other sources of fuel n energy.
Today there was a report of emissions in world china takes the top spot with emissions equal to usa india russia combined 🙄india is also up thr but japan usa n germany hv reduced quite a bit.

I'm glad you brought up Elon Musk and his hyperloop project. We need passionate visionaries like him in India.
But instead we have weddings, sangeets and all that jazz....you get the drift.

Speaking of hyperloop,..the proposed Mumbai-Pune hyperloop project is all set to be scrapped or at the most put on hold

Feel sad that it is just to spite BJP that SS is putting on hold all progressive projects. Many of these projects don't require huge funds (hyperloop is only for a small section as a technology prover) or they are funded by generous loans which will pay off in the long run (Bullet train).
Most importantly innovators will hesitate to put up new projects in Maharashtra if there are constant flip flops when parties at the helm change.
Remember, after Tata was virtually driven out of WB, big businesses hesitate to invest there due to uncertainty of policies. The state is the looser.
