He was always known in cult circles as the guy in Requiem for a Dream which is considered a cult favorite. But mainstream success or blown in media came after winning an an Oscar for best supporting actor for playing a hiv positive trans woman in Dallas Buyers Club. Dude didn't even thank the community in his speech. Just after winning,the entire debate started on why a straight male was playing this character. He's the starting point of the outrage that cis straight men are taking away roles meant for LGBTQ actors who are out of the closet and because of this don't get work since Hollywood still discriminates. He's a a total nutjob too which Hollywood loves to call 'eccentric'. Constantly does less than pleasant stuff and stays in the limelight.
