While generalization is foolish, I can always speak from my own experience.

A large %ge of Americans of Indian origins do cling to the same prejudices they saw in the land of their origin when they left it. Casteism, racism, sexism, regionalism... etc. I have heard parents being mocked behind their backs when their children (2nd gen) marry black or Latino Americans. Many demand exorbitant dowries. Domestic abuse is not uncommon. Unfortunately, this is all grouped under "preserving culture."

Also under the guise of ethnic pride, some badmouth the very nation that welcomed them. Which is not to say the U.S. shouldn't be criticized by immigrants, but when there is an undertone of disdain for all things America, it begs the question 'why are you here?' If it is only for money, then it speaks more about your character (generic you) than about the U.S. or India. Love your biological mother and adoptive mother; they've both had a hand in making you who you are.

Sunny Leone, of course, would've run into more disapproval than most desi Americans, but I have no doubt she would've found the same disapproval no matter what community she came from - Indian, Chinese, Irish, Italian, Mexican, whatever. At the same time, when you're young and stupid, you do make mistakes. She's left her past behind. People should let her move on.

Agree!!

Some people just don't want to move on..don't want to change... Don't want to have broader views..

They don't even consider other culture exists... it's only about how good they are.

What Sunny is saying has truth.

Honestly have u seen those western people and their lifestyle? completely different to us.... they hardly meet parents care for them... they are very money minded. ...

if desi parents including indians try to keep inculcating good teachings to kids about our dharma and beliefs thats great (except petty things like caste or region). Essential in today's greedy world....

That sounds like a great utopia but in my personal experience, this forwardness (mainly applies just to sex and tiny clothes) is just an outward dressing.

The blase attitude only applies to those types of minor things and not to ones that actually matter. I've seen it with my own eyes that same ones engaging in premarital sex and acting all cool and more Westernized than the actual West are the same ones who will then get arranged marriages and ask for cars in dowries. These are the same people who will insist the daughter in law live with the husband's family, demand male children, etc.

But everyone's mileage varies based on what they've seen.

True, it's only an outward dressing. Some of these so called "forward" people who are okay with premarital sex, homosexuality, etc , are the same ones who still expect a woman to cook for them because her place is to nurture the family, and the man's is that of being a breadwinner.

It's laughable, really.

That's generalisation too. Living separately doesn't mean u don't care or don't meet. Ya their lifestyle is different and they r comfortable that way. I personally feel having a connection with elders keeps u grounded and their wisdom helps u through many struggles.

People who criticize west for having this different lifestyle even look down on Indian joint families. Seriously, what's wrong if daughter in law lives with in-laws? Joint family is also good

I kind of agree with her. Most Indians do hold on to those old thoughts. I remember almost all my relatives telling me you can't do this in India, you can't do that... Can't wear shorts or tank top.. can't platonically talk to guys over there.

When I came here almost everything I heard turned out the be wrong. The lives my cousins live is as free as any other country. People are so open-minded and accepting.

Most Indians in USA really do live in the 90s India. Some people might get butthurt by this but it's true.

Indians are not money minded ?

How many property cases and murders have happened just for wealth between brothers and relatives

LOL now if I say something, people will shout Islamophobia and blah blah blah.

Why only blame NRIs?

Aren't there women in hijab or burqa in foreign countries? Doesn't Ilhan Omar wear a head scarf?

Are they not trying to hold on to their culture and beliefs too then?

Recently, Imran Khan even said something like western women only know how to shed clothes and blah blah.

So,moral of the story is, it's not only INDIANS, but all immigrants try to hold on to their culture and beliefs while in abroad.

Yea Anurag Kashyap once said a realistic modern content film doesn't do well in US/UK while family films at times with regressive story does really well there.. That says a lot.

This is wrong generalization which majority of sitting in india have about western culture , i used to think same way , all high and mighty about our family values , before i came to UK.

I have moved to so many places and most of the times our old English neighbours always have their children and grand children visiting them /taking them for shopping /lunch/dinner/family holidays etc on set days of the week ( if local ) or set days of the month ( if not local) . Weekends here are mostly family/friends/chill out time . Their cemeteries are always full of fresh flowers all the time even though graves have been so so old, i have not seen many people do that in India ( the ones who bury their dead) .

Living separately and spending good time with them every now and then is better than living with them ( due to cultural reasons ) but neglecting them and cribbing about them all the time ....which is the case with many indian/pakistani friends here and also relatives back in india too .
