Chapter 9:
Prerna noted the name of the journalist and was just closing the paper when Anurag burst into her room and hugged her tight.
Anurag; I knew it. I KNEW IT! You were going to come back to me, I knew it. He's not for you. It is only Anurag and Prerna. We are soul-mates. We will be together forever Prerna, just like we planned. I will not let anyone come between us again.
Prerna was too mentally and physically exhausted this morning: Anurag, please...
Anurag: Don't worry about my family. They will forgive you eventually. I will forgive you too. I will pretend like it never happened. I will never speak of it again. We will close Bajaj's chapter from our lives.
Prerna pushed him away feebly: Forgive me? Anurag, you don't even know half the story. Please listen to me, we can't close this chapter and go back to how things were.
Anurag laughed in disbelief: Please don't joke at a time like this, Prerna.
His ego and assumptions were really getting a bit much for her to bear.
Prerna sternly: I mean it.
Anurag startled: Why not!? I told you, it doesn't matter to me what happened. You left him and that's all that matters! I knew you would come back to me!
Prerna took a deep breath: I did not leave him. He broke up this marriage because he thought I would be happier.
Anurag's eyes were going red: You are telling me you still want to be with him!? With THAT guy? For God's sake Prerna, he has a child!
Prerna: I married THAT guy, Anurag! Marriage means something, even if it wasn't how I had originally planned it. Don't you understand!? Whatever the reason, he's the one I am tied to for seven lifetimes. I can't just leave that chapter behind like that nothing ever happened!
Anurag: We are the ones connected, Prerna. We were meant to be together for seven lifetimes. Bajaj was a mistake! How could you say that? We can annul that marriage and move on! (He ended softly) We love each other.
Prerna: I do care for you Anurag, you matter sooo much to me. But my love has altered by the pheres I took with him. I see that now. I care deeply about you, I always have and I would do anything for you. I cherish the time we had. But I cannot go back.
Anurag: What will you do then!? You want to go back to that Bajaj who used you and left you?
Prerna grimly: Don't talk about things you don't understand. He never used me.
Anurag angrily: You plan to go back begging to save that sham marriage. You want to go back to that criminal!
Prerna was walking away when she turned around, her neck arched: It might surprise you to know that going between you and him are not my only two options. Please excuse me, Kukki has a play today.
Anurag: Prerna, you have LOST YOUR MIND! You are still playing "mother" to that kid when Bajaj ended the marriage!? All you care about is what society will say if you left that marriage and kid. That's why you can't move on. I told you I will ACCEPT you, Prerna, what more do you want!?
Prerna: I don't care about what society will say, Anurag. I am doing what my faith in marriage tells me to do. I believe in the fire, the pheres, everything. Whether that was the plan or not, his life and mine are tied forever. Whether the marriage lasts or not, I will not break Kukki's heart, she's my daughter and I am her mother.
Banerjee: Sir, you are heading out early right?
Bajaj put on his coat: Yes, it's Kukki's first play today. She's playing a butterfly. I must be there.
Banerjee smiled: That's wonderful sir, best wishes to little Ms. Kukki.
Rishab forced a smiled and willed himself to walk forward. Nausea was setting in, he hoped he could make it to Kukki's show on time.
Rishab turned around: Actually Banerjee, please have someone drive me over, I am not feeling too well to drive.
Banerjee: Sure, sir, just give me a minute.
Rishab sat back, he dreaded any questions from Kukki right now. It was too soon to ease her into the separation. She was expecting Prerna to show up. What would happen when she eventually found out Prerna was not coming?
Rishab called Kukki's doctor for advice.
Tanvi whispered to her mom: Mom, I am worried.
Maasi: About what?
Tanvi: Rishab, of course! I think he's making himself sick living on his coffee diet. I didn't see him eat anything in the last two days since Prerna left! He's turned away Chandu at every meal at home and I don't think he's eating at work either. He will make himself sick! What if he really really really loves her?
Maasi: He has seen much worse in his life. Give him time. He wouldn't send her away without her mangal sutra if he cared about her. It's really over, you should be happy and make your move on him.
Tanvi shook her head: But...what if he breaks down? I am really worried! I can't see him suffer like this.
Maasi: Then go cook him dinner and see what you can do to win his heart now that Prerna is gone! Why do you I have to teach you such basic common sense things, Tanvi!?
Tanvi: Oh, why didn't I think of that? Good idea! (She ran for the kitchen).
Kukki played a yellow butterfly on stage, one of many little butterflies in the background of the Little Miss Muffet play, but all Bajaj saw was his little butterfly. When it finished, he clapped with tears shining in his eyes like he just saw the best musical performance at the Milan opera.
Little Kukki had no lines, but she made a very smiley background character. Rishab thought she was marvelous.
When the kids finished and the parents stopped their clapping, the kids all came off the stage and posed for photos with their parents. Rishab followed Kukki with his eyes as he approached her, but she didn't see him and ran in the opposite direction - right into Prerna's arms.
Rishab froze.
She was at the back in a simple black saree, her eyes badly swollen under the makeup she applied to hide them. She was looking thinner than she even had been. Rishab looked her up and down. No jewelry. She looked like a ghost of her old self. He was expecting her to look refreshed - with the weight of the world off her bird's wing shoulders...not, not like this. This was quite the opposite. She was clearly not well and yet she came to Kukki's play. She remembered, and despite everything, she came. He sighed, he had picked the perfect mom for Kukki.
Rishab held back.
Prerna saw from her peripheral vision that Rishab stood in the background and she hugged Kukki. She did not look in his direction directly. If he wanted her out of his life, he would have it. He was going to be invisible to her from now on.
Prerna hugged Kukki from side to side: How is my beta? You did me so proud!
Kukki buried herself further in her embrace, feeling proud and shy.
Prerna: Look, Mama has a gift for you. What is this!? Mama baked cookies for Kukki to take to her dorm and share with her friends. Kukki ki favorite coconut cookies! You like it?
Kukki nodded.
Prerna: Make sure you share, honey, okay? I made plenty.
Kukki kissed Prerna on the cheek. She turned around and saw her father and pointed excitedly, nearly hopping in place.
Rishab did not take a step further, Prerna saw his feet.
The whispering were coming to her ear, she had heard them throughout the play and they showed now signs of stopping even now.
"She must have lost her marbles, who leaves Rishab Bajaj!? I mean...look at him! He's such a dish!"
"I am sure another woman will jump in soon and then she will regret it immediately. She didn't know how good she had it, tsk tsk."
"Hey, I am available! Priya's father and my divorce finalized last year. Sign me up for some Rishab Bajaj!"
The women giggled behind Prerna. Rishab couldn't hear them from that far off.
Prerna's skin was burning from the humiliation. She took a deep breath and willed herself to leave by walking past them.
Prerna: Beta, I have go. Mama will come by tomorrow, okay? Hum ek saath lunch karenge. Thik hai?
Kukki looked confused and tried to pull her in Rishab's direction.
Prerna gave her a quick hug and rushed away, past the women sitting behind her.
Rishab came now and picked up Kukki: You were so amazing, mera baccha! Papa has a big gift for you in the car, come.
Kukki struggled in his arms. She signaled for Prerna.
Rishab: Yes, papa, I will explain. Come honey, let's go see the gift.
Kukki struggled now in his arms not, wanting to go to Prerna. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't stop her crying when that did not happen.
Rishab felt as distraught as his daughter was and all of the doctor's suggestions went flying out the window in the stress of the situation.
Rishab: I am sorry beta, no, no we didn't fight. Mama is just busy. Papa hai na?
By the time Rishab came back home, having put Kukki in the school nurse's care, he could barely see straight. The nausea was making him so dizzy.
Rishab came into a hall full of the smell of food and it made him feel even sicker. He hadn't tasted food in a while and his senses were getting overwhelmed.
Tanvi appeared in front of him: Come Rishab, I made all your favorite foods! Come let's have dinner together.
Rishab: Thanks Tanvi, but I am fine.
He tried to walk away, but his head whirled and he fell to the floor.
Last thing he remembered, he saw Tanvi screaming his name and then screaming for someone to come help.
Please leave your comments. I have been noticing thousands of clicks and don't know if people are actually reading or not.
Wow .. wonderful .. beautifully written .... I feel sad for kuki .. poor kid .... And anurag is being very annoying ,he has a thick skull😁😁
I want to know what prerna does now!!!..
Thanks for updating!!👌👌👌
Interesting update 👏
Kuki is suffering so much, her parents are so stubborn 😡
Massi & Tanvi are evil
Anurag is not understanding anything, what a thick skull🤔
Let's see how Prerna will react
Waiting for next
As expected, Anurag came to claim her as his😆. Some people are so delusional they think only what they want to think even after saying the facts. He is not believing her that she prefers to stay away from him. And his behavior saying that he forgives her is. I love how she says she doesn't have to go back to any of the men👏.
Bajaj, man why to do what he did and to suffer. He is suffering and he is making her suffer as well along with his daughter. Kukki baby as a butterfly. Both her parents came but they are not together. And she went to her mother first. I so wish Bajaj to listen to how Prerna was targetted by his foolish act. How she is suffering listening to all the taunts. Kukki wants her mother even when her father is with her with a big gift. Please stop troubling the baby in your games.
Rishabh is sick now. I want Prerna to know about it and come and scold/bash him and take out all her frustration on him. Hopefully, he would understand then that he did wrong with her and his daughter.
Nice update. Please do update soon.
Will they ever try and communicate with each other!
MUs take them apart...
Feeling bad for Mr.Bajaj, and Anurag is .........
