I’m gonna say something that’s going to piss off a lot of people but here goes. Marriage is seen as this holy and pure thing in South Asian culture and it’s given soooo much meaning to it but at the end of the day, so many women are tied in this marriage relationship with no way out. They’re in abusive and toxic relationships with their husbands with no way out and divorces are considered social suicide. With arranged marriages, you never really know what you’re gonna get from your partner because you don’t know anything about them. So yes, marriage can be the most meaningful relationship there is and it could be holy and pure but it’s not like that with everyone, especially for the women. There are too much expectations put on them, and their actions are microanalyzed by the in-laws and the rest of the family members. (Yes yes, Not all women are treated this way blah blah blah)
Coming to Bajaj and Prerna, their relationship was neither typical, romantic, or even fair when you think about it. Putting expectations of a typical marriage is unfair to that relationship. It’s unfair to the parties involved in that relationship. We talk about marriages joining families and bringing not just two people but two families together. How can we respect Bajaj bringing Prerna to join his family when he broke the two families that were about to be joined together because of Anurag and Prerna. Nivedita and Mohini let go of their ego because of Anurag’s happiness and were accepting Prerna. In Bajajs house, his family members are doing god knows what. I get that both parties are not the best families, but the point is, Anurag’s family were accepting Prerna before she got married to him.
So I don’t really consider PreRish marriage real and it shouldn’t be compared to the standard of marriage that people get into without any conditions put on them. If tomorrow Prerna wakes up and decides, I don’t really wanna play mother to a man who married me for my loyalty, then what happens? Will Bajaj still respect her decisions? Will he put Anurag in jail? Will his feelings disappear now that he fears she will leave him and daughter and put another condition in front of her? Who knows? Not me.
