Saturday Update: Batla House And Mangal Mission

Mangal Mission and Batla House showed big growth on Saturday as Janmashtami holiday continued on Saturday. There were parst of India which had a restricted holiday on Friday and other parts were on holiday on Saturday. Some places saw two consecutive days of holidays like Gujarat.

This has meant solid jumps for both films as Mission Mangal should be in the 12-13 crore nett range while Batla House should collect 5.50-6 crore. The Janmashtami factor and the open week has really benefited both films on Friday and Saturday as collections would be much lower otherwise.

Mission Mangal has recorded huge numbers in Gujarat on its second Friday and Saturday and the figures on Saturday in the state are probably only bettered by around 5 films in history for the second Saturday. They are better than Kabir Singh which had the best second Saturday in Gujarat / Saurashta so far this year and this is a film which is not really for this circuit.

If this is the movie that received "critical acclaim" from movie reviewers in Indian newspapers than why did a movie like Total Dhamal did not receive the same ? Mission Mangal is a cliched, regressive, flawed movie . ISRO, Army are some of the very very few institutions left in India that can still hold their head high . Bollywood is milking the impeccable reputation of these institutions to mint money from their third rate movies.

Mission Mangal is making money only because ISRO's name is attached to it . Producers of Mission Mangal should donate half of their money to ISRO because there third rate product is selling only due to ISRO tag.

Mission Mangal Second Saturday Business

Mission Mangal had huge second Saturday collections of 12.75 crore nett apprx as Janmashtami pushed it collections higher for the second day running. The second weekend has already crossed 20 crore nett and film has crossed 145 crore nett in ten days.

The target for the film is probably the numbers of 2.0 (Hindi) which did around 185 crore nett and if the film does grow today (Sunday) then that number will be there irrespective of what happens in the third week. The growth on Saturday is around 70% which is super strong considering Friday also showed growth of 25% from Thursday.

Mission Mangal Has Excellent Second Weekend

Mission Mangal had an excellent second weekend as it grossed 35 crore nett which looked a very high number considering the business it did not on the weekdays. There is the factor of Janmashtami over the weekend but even allowing for that its still a big number as the collections had come down to 6 crore nett on Thursday.

The total collections of the film are 160 crore nett in eleven days and today will probably tell how much of a boost Janmashtami gave the film. The film has scored 50 crore nett in Mumbai and is on the verge of crossing the business of Rowdy Rathore (51.48 crore nett) and then will also cross 2.0 (Hindi) which was 57.03 crore nett. The figures of 2.0 (Hindi) in North, Central India and Bihar will probaly not be reached but other have already crossed or will cross in time.

Mission Mangal Is The Biggest Concept Film

Mission Mangal has emerged the biggest concept film beating the likes of Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par. In terms of box office numbers its way ahead of the others but that is pretty easy as the ticket rates are much higher today from ten years back but it will be top in terms of footfalls also making it the most watched concept film in recent history.

In the industry and trade these films are generally called content films but that is not the case as the successful commercial films are also content films. It is the content which differentiates a Tiger Zinda Hai and a Race 3 as if it was about being commercial / potbiler then all would work but its the content ones which work and the ones without content dont. The concept film is generally based on a theme and is not relying on music, action and comedy for its content. As these elements are missing then the films tend to look slightly off beat.

There were three of these type of films which stood up above the rest before and they were Chak De India, Taare Zameen Par and Barfi! but now Mission Mangal has come and topped all these three films and found a larger audience which will make its adjusted figures higher than all three.

There are similarities between Chak De India as that had a big star like Shahrukh Khan leading a team of females and this also has a big star Akshay Kumar leading a team of females. Both films can be said to be female centric as the crux of the story revolves around them but the box office only really cares for the big stars and if you take Akshay Kumar out of Mission Mangal then you probably would be less than a quarter of the business it has done now. Even these concept films need that big star as well as a connecting concept to take them to another level. The concept alone can do well but you are not going to get 1 crore plus people into the theatres. The other coincidence with Chak De India is the date, that film was also released in the same week 12 years ago but the importance of big holidays was far less at that time.

The big plus for these films today if they have a big star is the potential revenue as the non theatrical revenue can be big even for a film without commercial elements. This film shot in 30 days and a production budget of 32 crore and will see Akshay Kumar get around 110 crore as actor / producer which was unthinkable a few years back that such a film can see such huge returns.

The other three big films of this zone Chak De India, Taare Zameen Par and Barfi! could not hit it out on television and that would be the task for Mission Mangal now. Barfi! did not do well at all while the other two did okay but you cant say they were major HITS on television. The top concept films in recent times with the footfalls are as follows.
