Actually, many Asavaris are present even in Urban setting. There is a distinct difference between a pure housewife (who does not have any means of earning) and a working lady. The working lady is self confident and will not allow herself to become like Asavari. However, in case of a housewife who is dependent on her husband for all her needs, she might turn into someone like Asavari.
Again, I know of a couple of cases where a rural girl married into an urban family and they are treated like doormats by her husband and son.
So IMHO a character like Asavari is very much possible in urban setting and not very far from reality.
