hello, sorry for disappearing again and thank you for your patience. Academics is a little more demanding this year, hence the inconsistency.

Part 14

Arjun: tum aur Shree mere saath chalo, society ki chaan been karte hai, shayad koi clue mil jaaye

Riya/Shree: yes sir!.........................................

The trio went downstairs and started searching the premises. As they reached the posterior parking lot, their concentration was disturbed by a murder of crows cawing as if someone was torturing them, near the dustbin.

Riya: ye kauve itna shor kyun macha rahe hai?

Shree: kauve hai re, shor nahi machayenge toh kya karenge? Unka paas kaunsa kaam-dhandha hai? kuch khaane ko hoga dustbin mein

Arjun observed the patch where the crows were screaming: nahi Shree, khaate-khaate itna shor nahi karte ye log

Riya threw her hands in the air: main kuch nahi karne waali, us kabaade mein aap hi haath daaliye

Arjun: main nahi daalne waala, (prompting) Shree!

Shree looked at the dustbin and frowned: yes sir

He made a face as he slipped on his gloves. He took a deep breath and went forward. Shooing the birds away, he dragged the garbage bag towards himself. To his horror, blood could be seen from the pecking of the bag. He tried to pull it out but it was heavy.

The stench was terrible. He coughed and looked away as he used all his force to get the bag out. He dragged it away from the heap of garbage and opened it. His socks tied in a knot as he saw the content. Shocked, he tore open the bag. A toddler’s blood stained body revealed itself. He stared at Arjun in horror.

Arjun stared at the body. He had a hunch and it was true. Horrifying memories replayed in his head. Riya softly held his shoulder bringing him out of them. He took a deep breath and entwined his fingers with her, gesturing her that he was okay.

Shree called up Rathore who was equally shocked. Within a few hours, Kanpur police got Kailash’s father and brother who confessed to having killed them for marrying against their wishes outside the caste.

Shree: us bache ki body ko dustbin mein kyun daala?

Ratan(brother): woh dar ke bhaag gaya tha, raat ke kareeban 1 baj rahe the, watchman ghode bechkar so raha tha. woh us parking lot mein chala gaya, toh humne use wahi maar kar thikaane laga diya aur waha se nikal gaye

Arjun punched him in anger: Sharam Aani Chahiye Tum Logon Ko, Jaati Ke Name Par Teen Logon Ki Jaane Le Li, Us Bache Ka Kya Kasoor Tha?!?!

Ratan(angrily): Ye Ki Uska Khoon Ganda Tha!!

Arjun punched him again: Khoon Toh Tum Logon Ka Ganda Hai! Chotu Lekar Jaa Ise!!!

Chotu took the men to the lock up as Arjun left. Seeing the closure of the case, Rathore called the day off. Arjun and Riya were walking out hand in hand when Arjun’s phone rang. His brow furrowed seeing the caller ID. His father’s name flashed across the screen.

Arjun(confused): hello?

Suryakant: Arjun ghar aa jaana thodi der, kaam hai thoda

Arjun: uh…oh…ji, sab theek hai?

Suryakant: ha bas tumhara kaam hai

Arjun: acha main aata hun thodi der mein

Suryakant: hm

Call disconnect

Riya: kya hua?

Arjun: Dad ka phone tha, ghar bula rahe the, kaha kuch kaam hai

Riya :usme itna kyun soch rahe hai?

Arjun: kyunki mujhe yaad bhi nahi hai ki aakhri baar Papa ne mujhe mere phone par kab call kiya tha, aaj achanak kya hua?

Riya: aap jaayenge toh pata chal jaayega na

Arjun: ha woh toh hai

Riya: acha aap jaayiye, main taxi le lungi

Arjun: are nahi, main tumhe chod kar chala jaunga, urgent nahi hai

Riya: lekin…

Arjun: lekin wekin kuch nahi! (nudging her along) tum chalo mere saath!!

He dropped her home and left for his.

Rawte mansion-

He entered, opening the door with his keys. His father was waiting for him in the living room. He looked around but Shweta was nowhere to be seen. Suryakant cleared his throat gaining his attention.

Suryakant: woh darasal, ye papers de gaya tha (handing him some documents) tumhara wakil aaj office mein

Arjun took them in perplexion. They were his divorce papers, finally sealed by the court. It had been accepted a day before. A smile came on his face but wait, how did the papers reach office?

Arjun: lekin woh aapke office kyun de gaya? Upar Se Ek Mahina Ho Gaya, Maine Use Kaha Tha Ki Mujhe Do Hafton Mein Chahiye (Fishing Out His Phone) Iski Toh…

Suryakant: Arjun rehne do na, shayad der hone ki wajah se tumse dar gaya hoga aur isliye office de gaya

Arjun: lekin woh mere office bhi bhijwa sakta tha, use aapke office ka pata kaise mila?

Suryakant raised his eyebrow: Arjun humara office address Google par hai, 5 saal ka bacha bhi nikaal sakta hai

Arjun sighed: woh toh hai, khair maa kaha hai?

Suryakant: woh darasal Shweta mandir gayi hai kisi havan mein, fir wahi langar bhi hai toh use aate-aate der ho jaayegi

Arjun: oh…uh...toh….uh…main, main chalta hu

He was about to turn when Suryakant stopped him.

Suryakant: Arjun!

Arjun: ji?

Suryakant: woh…um, ab yaha tak gaye ho toh…(hesitantly) khaana kha kar chale jao, I mean of course agar tumhe koi aur kaam nahi hai toh

Arjun(reluctantly): umm, nahi koi kaam toh nahi hai…theek hai

A spark shined in Suryakant’s eyes. He called out to Manohar to lay the dinner. The father son duo sat at the table as Manohar served them. An awkward silence rested in between. But whatever the result Suryakant was more than satisfied. Arjun on the other hand was feeling very weird. His father could have easily sent the papers home with an errand boy instead of calling him home, that too when Shweta was not there. He was sure that the papers landing up with him was no coincidence. Thoughts raced in his mind. Taking a chance, he ventured formally.

Arjun: papa (Suryakant looked up) main aur Riya shaadi karne ki soch rahe hai

Suryakant: invitation de rahe ho ya fir shaamil hone ke liye keh rahe ho?

Arjun looked at him in surprise: nahi, woh…kuch decide nahi kiya but…

The doorbell broke the conversation. Manohar opened the door. Shweta and Arjun smiled on seeing each other. He was about to stand up but she told him to finish eating. Shweta settled beside Arjun’s chair.

Suryakant: tum jaldi aa gayi?

Shweta: ha bas havan thoda jaldi khatam ho gaya toh saara kaam bhi jaldi ho gaya

Suryakant: oh

Shweta turned to Arjun: tumne bataya nahi tum aane waale ho?

Arjun: woh kuch papers lene the isliye

Suryakant: waise shaadi karna toh decide kar liya haina?

Arjun: ha

Shweta eyed them in confusion: shaadi?

Arjun: ha maa, main aur Riya shaadi karna chahte hai

Shweta stiffened a little: wahi ladki? Jiske saath tumhara…

Arjun: of course wahi maa, pyaar karta hun use. aap aise kyun react kar rahi hai?

Shweta: Arjun, dekho main

She stopped in the middle hesitant and a little afraid if it would worsen and break everything that had formed again. Arjun could sense her fear and reluctance.

Arjun assured her: maa kya baat hai? bataiye toh sahi, warna solution kaise niklega?

Shweta took a deep breath: Arjun main maanti hu ki Roshni ke saath tumhara rishta ek galti thi, aur uske saath jo bhi kuch hua bilcul sahi hua par beta, tum dono ko ye baat nahi pata thi ki Roshni gunehgaar hai….iske bavjud, woh ek shadi-shuda admi ke saath aise…jo kisi aur ka ghar tod sakti hai woh tumhara ghar kaise basa sakti hai? jo woh ek baar kar sakti hai wahi dusri baar bhi toh kar sakti hai?

Arjun listened patiently to all her concerns. Though if it would have been anyone else other than her, the person would have been dead by now, for sure.

Arjun: maa, aapki chinta sahi hai lekin humara rishta ek tarfa nahi tha. agar Riya gunehgaar hai toh main bhi utna hi gunehgaar hun. Bhale hi duniya ko humara rishta najayaaz lage lekin main jaanta hun ki humare rishte se zyaada jaayaz aur kuch nahi hai. Aur jis tarah se aapko uske baare mein pata chala us tarah se bhi nahi chalna chahiye tha, pehle woh photographs aur fir office mein… Main ye bhi jaanta hun ki us din jis tarah se woh Rathore se behes kar rahi thi aur jis tarah se usne react kiya woh aapko pasand nahi aaya par maa woh jaisi hai waisi hi dikhti hai. woh sar jhuka kar galat ko sahi maanne waalo mein se nahi hai fir bhale hi uske saamne koi bhi kyun na khada ho aur us din usne jo bhi kiya mere liye kiya. sach toh yahi haina ki aap logon ko us waqt mujh par bharosa nahi tha? (he softly held her hand) please maa, I don’t want to choose again. Main usse bahot pyaar karta hu aur woh bhi mujhse utna hi pyaar karti hai aur…aur agar aapko aitraaz hai toh theek hai, aapko zindgi mein kabhi humari shakal nahi dekhni padegi

Shweta: Arjun main bas ye nahi chahti ki tumhara dil firse tute

He smiled: aisa kuch nahi hoga, bharosa haina mujh par?

Shweta nodded and stood up to hug him: pura bharosa hai…aur dobara kabhi nahi dagmagayega

Arjun embraced her tightly: thank you!

Suryakant smiled seeing them. Though he knew, his relation with Arjun could probably never be the same, he was more than happy to see the family gather again.

Shweta smiled and kissed his forehead: use jaldi ghar le aana, date fix kar denge ok?

Arjun(happily): aap bolo toh abhi lekar aata hu

Shweta: bilcul nahi, ache muhurat mein laana

He rolled his eyes: isme bhi muhurat?

Shweta: ha! ab baatein baad mein karna jaldi se khaana khatam karo

Arjun: yes boss!

Shweta: Arjun!!

He chuckled as he turned his focus to the plate again. Finishing the dinner, he took leave from them and drove straight to Riya’s house. He ran up the steps to the porch and wildly rang the doorbell. The door opened to an annoyed girlfriend.

Riya: kya hai itni…

Arjun hugged her before she could even register it was him. She was taken by surprise at the sudden affection.

Riya: Arjun? Kya hua? Sab theek haina?

Arjun beamed: ha sab kuch bahot theek hai!!

Riya was amused at his actions. They entered in and settled on the sofa. The TV was on.

Arjun: are fast and furious? Kitne din ho gaye

Riya :ha, main sone jaa rahi thi par fir socha dekh leti hu, ek din late soungi toh chalega

Arjun laughed and gave her a side hug: acha kiya warna mujhe tumhe neend se jagana padta

Riya: waise aap yaha? Ghar gaye the na? and….chal kya raha hai?

Arjun: tumhare liye ek…nahi sorry do good news hai

Riya: aur woh kya hai?

Arjun: pehla ye ki mera divorce accept ho gaya

Riya: really?

Arjun: ha, us idiot wakil ne woh papers dad ke office bhej diye the par sach kahu toh mujhe lag raha hai papa ne hi kuch gadbad ki hai, warna woh waha kyun jaayega? Maine pucha toh kehne lage ki mujhse dar gaya hoga kyunki do hafte ke bajay mahina beet gaya but tum hi batao aise hota toh ETF ke reception par chod deta,mere ghar par chod deta lekin office kyun? Usse bhi ajeeb ye baat hai ki papa ne aisa kiya kyun?

Riya smiled: shayad unhe aapse milna ka bahana chahiye ho ya fir indirectly hi sahi aapki khushi ka kaaran banna chahte ho?

Arjun squinted: okay, bahana tak rakhte let’s just not go to khushi yet!

She giggled: acha dusri baat kya hai?

Arjun pulled her closer: dusri baat ye Miss Mukherjee ki woh dono humari shaadi ke liye maan gaye

This became a bitter pill for her: sach mein?

Arjun: oh madam, itna feeka reaction kyun de rahi ho?

Riya: nahi main obviously khush hu par woh maan gaye?

Arjun hugged her: maine unhe mana liya

Riya squinted at him: mana liya?

Arjun: sach mein baba, ab unke man mein kuch nahi hai

Riya finally smiled and hugged him tightly: I love you!!!

Arjun: I love you too!!!

They cuddled on the couch, watching the movie and enjoying the other’s company.

Riya: waise Arjun

Arjun: ha?

Riya: hum toh din bhar documents aur papers ke andar dabe rehte hai lekin aapka woh divorce paper, aapki zindgi ka sabse khushi dene waala legal document hoga na?

He squeezed her thoughtfully: hoga par sabse zyaada hua nahi hai

Riya: matlab?

Arjun: matlab ye ki usse bhi better ek legal document hoga

Riya(confused): kya?

Arjun kissed her nose: humari shaadi ka certificate

Riya snuggled closer to him: uska intezaar mujhe bhi rahega

Arjun smiled pulling her into his warm embrace and kissed her forehead muttering a thank you for coming into his life which she reciprocated with tugging him closer as their lips met in a sweet kiss.

They both had battled their own demons. He had sought and delivered justice for his daughter, while finding a perfect life partner who he could trust and willingly sacrifice anything for in the process. She had given her heart to a man who she realised could possibly never be hers, selflessly standing by him and winning his affection in return. They knew they were soul mates, set apart from each other but had finally found their destiny to each other. The world hadn’t fought their battles, let them call it……Forbidden Love!
