Arjun pulled away and threw his gun in aggravation: NAAAHHHIII!!!
His breaths turned heavy as he shivered in anguish. He ran a hand through his hair as he slowly calmed down realising she was right.
Roshni mocked them: tum logon ko kya lagta hai? tum mujhe le jaoge aur mujhe saza hogi? Mujhe koi haath nahi laga sakta! meri madad karne waale sabse pehle tumhare maa-baap hi honge Arjun!
Arjun glared at her: Tumhe Saza Dilaane Se Mujhe Koi Nahi Rok Sakta Roshni! Jitna Zor Lagana Hai Laga Lo! Agar Tumhe Zindgi Bhar Salakhon Ke Peeche Nahi Pahunchaya Toh Mera Naam Bhi ACP Arjun Rawte Nahi!
He grabbed her wrist and dragged her outside.
Roshni: aah!! Arjun!!
Riya heaved a sigh of relief. She removed her earring, shaking the camera and closed it.
Cut to black!
The lights came back in the court. A creepy silence had set itself in the atmosphere. Arjun placed his palm on Riya’s hand. Suryakant and Shweta were feeling emotions unexplained by the dictionary…shock, pain, regret, you name it and it was in their hearts. Vikram and Roshni were appalled on seeing their cover being blown. They had thought that Arjun didn’t have any sort of proof as he spontaneously came to know about Roshni being Sikandar. The recording was their death certificate.
Jayesh brought the life back into the graveyard.
Jayesh: your honor! Ye tape ETF ki research specialist Riya Mukherjee jo is undercover mein thi, unhone submit ki hai aur ye 100% genuine hai (passing a paper) ye Forensics ne confirm kiya hai.
The judge examined the report. The footage was unedited and untampered with, a concrete material evidence containing Roshni’s confession enough to send her and Vikram behind bars!
Ravindra tried to stand up but Suryakant held his shoulder from behind. He turned to find Suryakant’s red eyes telling him to shut up and let the case go. Ravindra gulped seeing the fire and sat back.
Judge: kya defence ke paas koi saboot ya gavah hai?
Ravindra stood up: ji…ji nahi Your honor
Vikram stood up and barked: Ravindra!! Maine Tumhe Apni Beti Ko Bachane Ke Liye Paise Diya Hai Tumhe…
The judge tapped his hammer: Order! Order! Mr Vikram Shekhawat apni jagah par baith jayiye warna aapko contempt of court ke liye bhi charge kar diya jaayega!
Vikram fumed and sat back.
Judge:closing statements?
Jayesh: your honor! Humari darkhwaast hai ki Mrs Roshni ko sakht se sakht saza di jaaye taaki koi bhi dobara kisi bhi tarah ka crime karne se pehle 100 baar soche, woh sirf underworld ki don hi nahi balki ek cold-blooded murderer bhi hai, that’s all!
Ravindra unbuttoned and buttoned his coat. For the first time in his 20 years of practice he didn’t have anything to say.
Ravindra: may justice prevail!
The judge wrote down his verdict. He put his pen down and read it out.
Judge: tamam sabuton aur gavahon ko maddenazar rakhte hue ye adalaat Mrs Roshni Rawte ko IPC Section 120 B, Section 189, Section 195 A, Section 299, Section 300,Section 302, Section 320, Section 322, Section 324, Section 325, Section 370,Section 370 A ke tahet 17 saal ki rigorous imprisonment aur faasi ki saza sunati hai! ye adalaat police ko aadesh dete hue un par IPC Section 372 aur NCB ke niyamon ke tahet alag se case chalane ka hukum deti hai. Saath hi saath Mr Vikram Shekhawat par kaarwaahi karne ka aadesh deti hai! The case is closed(tapping the hammer) The court is adjourned!
The police arrested Vikram and Roshni taking them away in custody. Sameer immediately followed Suryakant and Shweta. Arjun turned to ask Riya about the report but she had already gotten up, following Shree outside. He went behind her.
Outside-
Sameer consoled Arjun’s parents. They were still unable to believe the reality, hoping that all of it was a nightmare. Their conversation was interrupted by the juniors coming.
Riya: Shree…
Arjun held Riya’s elbow making her face him, shifting all the attention to them
Arjun: Riya woh forensic report kaha se aayi?
Riya(confused): kaha se aayi matlab? IFD se aur kaha se?
Arjun: obviously IFD se aayi hai Riya, mere kehne ka matlab ki tumne mujhe bataya kyun nahi?
Riya: par…us din main gayi thi na? aapko kaha tha maine ki saboot pakka karne jaa rahi hu?
Arjun: toh tum IFD gayi thi?
Riya: ha aur kaha jaungi? Aapko kya laga?
Arjun shrugged: mujhe kya lagega? Us waqt mera dimag kaam kaha kar raha tha, tumne mujhe aakar video ke baare mein bataya toh maine socha use secure karne gayi hogi ya kuch? (changing the point) but either way, IFD toh ETF se directly deal karta hai toh fir report tumhare haath kaise lagi?
Riya: are ye Shree haina? Maine use kaha tha ki woh log report bheje toh mujhe forward kar de
Sameer(incredulously): Shree tumhe pata tha? idiot! Bata nahi sakte the? kam se kam dimag ka bharta banne se bach jaata!
Shree(innocently): are nahi sir, mujhe nahi pata tha, mujhe Riya ne bola ki report aaye toh forward kar dena, IFD ka mail aaya toh maine use bhej diya, maine toh khol kar dekha bhi nahi ki kis cheez ka hai
Arjun happily hugged Shree: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much Shree!!
Shree blushed: it’s ok sir!
The rest of the team giggled seeing them. Smiles were finally back after the dreadful days.
Sameer spoke as they separated: Arjun, Riya, I’m sorry main…
Arjun: are chod yaar!! Teri koi galti nahi thi, us situation mein koi bhi aise hi react karta hai
Sameer smiled and hugged him: fir bhi, I didn’t mean to hurt you
Arjun blinked in assurance: you didn’t Sam
Chotu: waise sir ab…
A voice from behind interrupted them: Mr Rawte!
Arjun and Suryakant turned in the direction. A lawyer walked upto them who only Arjun recognised.
Lawyer: acha hua aap yahi mil gaye, main aapko phone karne hi waala tha
Arjun sighed: ab kya hai Girish?
Girish: aapko aur aapki wife dono ko court mein haazir hona hi padega divorce ke liye
His words perplexed everyone. Arjun groaned.
Arjun(restraining himself): Girish! Main tumhe kitni baar samjhau ki main papers par bina Roshni ke jaane Dhoke se signatures liye hai! hum court mein nahi aa sakte! Mutual Hai Toh Woh Judge Divorce Kyun Nahi De Raha Hai?
Girish: sir maine koshish ki lekin woh judge keh raha hai ki ek baar aap dono ko present hona hi padega, thoda tedha hai
Arjun(angrily): 3 mahine se signature de chuka hu tumhe aur tum abhi bhi usi baat par atke ho!
Girish(scared): par sir main judge thodi hu?
Arjun: Bhaad Mein Jaaye Judge!
Girish: par sir divorce toh wahi dega aur woh jo kehta hai woh follow toh karna padega na?
Arjun: tumhare judge ki toh….! (somehow he managed to stop himself from cursing and thought clearly) hold on! Roshni ko saza ho gayi hai, woh ek criminal hai toh mujhe nahi rehna uske saath! judge ko bol do
Girish: lekin sir, woh toh abhi criminal saabit hui, aapne 3 mahine pehle petition diya tha, tab thodi aapko pata tha?
Arjun: nahi pata tha, Lekin Ye Baat Judge Ko Nahi Pata! Use kaho ki mujhe pata chal gaya tha aur bas investigation ho rahi thi
Girish: lekin sir ye baat hum saabit kaise karenge?
Arjun: Sab Kuch Mujhe Karna Hai Toh Tumhe Kis Khushi Mein Hire Kiya Hai Maine? Ye Saabit Karna Tumhara Kaam Hai (Grabbing His Collar) Ek Baat Kaan Khol Kar Sun Lo Girish Agar Ek Hafte Ke Andar-Andar Mere Papers Par Court Ka Seal Nahi Laga Toh Main Tumhara Sar Kaat Kar Showpiece Mein Laga Dunga Samjhe Ya Samjhau?
Girish fumbled: ji…ji sir…ho jaayega
Arjun let go of him and he ran off.
There was stunned silence in the group. The 6 of them exchanged glances among each other and finally all of them rested on Riya. She gulped.
Riya: Arjun….ye divorce?
Arjun raised his eyebrow: ha toh?
Riya: nahi mera matlab….Roshni ke baare mein toh hume 3 din pehle pata chala toh fir aapne (slowly) 3 mahine pehle use divorce dene ka plan…
Arjun looked at her as if she was mad: toh? Tumhe kya laga? Tum zindgi bhar extramarital affair mein hi rehne waali thi?
Riya: na...hi…woh…
Arjun(disappointed): Riya tumhe sach mein laga ki…
Riya(firmly): nahi! maine kabhi aap par shak nahi kiya Arjun, main bas…aapne kabhi bataya nahi aur maine ye nahi socha tha ki aap itni jaldi (lowering her eyes) aisa kadam uthayenge, isliye
Arjun cupped her face: pyaar karta hun tumse Riya, aur use nibhaunga bhi!
Riya smiled as their eyes locked with each other’s.
Sameer coughed breaking their trance: toh…office chale? Kaam bahot hai
Arjun nodded: ha obviously, humare bina toh office mein kaha koi kaam hota hai?
Sameer glared at him. Arjun winked. Shweta finally mustered up the courage to speak.
Shweta: Arjun hum…
Arjun’s smile faded away: mujhe abhi koi baat nahi karni hai (holding Riya’s hand) chalo Riya!
And before anyone could say or do anything Arjun pulled Riya along with him ignoring her protests as she saw the heartbroken faces on his parent’s faces and tried to stop him.
A fresh tear rolled down Shweta’s eyes. Sameer comforted her.
Sameer: Aunty please aap dil chota mat kijiye, Arjun theek ho jaayega, use thoda waqt dijiye woh khud waapis aayega, woh aapke bina nahi reh sakta
Suryakant(dejectedly): woh Shweta ke bina nahi reh sakta Sameer
Sameer frowned understanding the underlying meaning behind his words. He didn’t have any answer for him. Silence set in. Sensing the hesitation and awkwardness Chotu came to his rescue.
Chotu: sir? woh….report?
Sameer mentally thanked him and turned to Suryakant: hume jaana hoga
He nodded. The team took their leave and left while Suryakant and Shweta returned home with heavy hearts.
Riya was thinking how to approach the topic as they drove towards ETF. She knew he had been hurt terribly, even though he had thought Roshni to have indirectly have a hand in Shivangi’s accident, it was a shock that she herself was Sikandar and had purposely been playing a game to separate him from his family and the worst part was that everyone had fallen into the trap.
Riya turned her head: ek baat puchu?
Arjun continued to focus on the road: mujhe us baare mein koi baat nahi karni
Riya: itni berukhi kyun Arjun?
Arjun: maine Dad se kabhi kuch expect nahi kiya, but maa….(gripping the wheel) Sab Us Roshni Ki Wajah Se!!....sab kuch bikhar gaya!
Riya: wahi toh main bhi keh rahi hu, sab Roshni ki wajah se
Arjun took a deep breath as his mind raced. She was right too but it wasn’t that easy. He had slowly withdrawn from them after his marriage. It was only formalities till Shivangi had been born. Then, he had looked at no one except her. After the fateful incident, he had stepped away even from friends wallowing in misery. After the rejection at home, he hadn’t mentioned about the facts to anyone, not even Sam. He didn’t have the strength to bear more of them. It wasn’t until Riya arrived that he started seeing a ray of hope.
Riya knew there was a turmoil going inside of him. She didn’t press him any further and placed her hand on his, squeezing it in assurance that she would be therefor him no matter what. Even if he said he didn’t want to have to do anything with them, the truth was he still cared. If he didn’t, he would have thrown Roshni and them out of his life a long time ago without even turning to look back where they fell. He just needed a respite from all the nonsense going on.
The rest of the day in ETF was pretty normal. They didn’t have a new case so they continued with finishing the paperwork of Sikandar’s case. Arjun was sipping his cutting chai in the balcony. The city view soothed his senses. Riya was searching him for signatures when she saw him lost in his own world. She smiled and went beside him.
Riya: Arjun main kya keh rahi thi, why don’t you take a break?
Arjun waved his glass: I am taking a break
Riya: are waise nahi, I mean, aap kuch dino ke liye holiday par kyun nahi jaate?
Arjun narrowed his eyes: Tum Sam ka khoon karne waali ho jo mujhe bhaga rahi ho?
Riya rolled her eyes and hit his arm with the file: Shut up! Main bas isliye keh rahi thi taaki aapka man behel jaaye, just…get away from all of this, all of us, sukoon milega aapko
Arjun put the glass on a side and turned to face her: kuch bhi karne ka man nahi hai Riya
Riya wound her hands around his neck: do you want something?
Arjun thought for a few moments: ha ek cheez hai
Riya: kya?
He wrapped his arms around her waist: A delete button, in my brain
Riya giggled: well, uske liye aapko shayad psychiatrist ki help leni chahiye, main kuch nahi kar sakti
Arjun made a face: utni mehnat kaun karega? Waise….tumhara idea acha hai, I do need a change in environment (thoughtfully) soch raha hun kuch din ghar chala jau
Riya(confused): ghar…chala jau? matlab?
Arjun: shuru mein jab IPS ke liye ghar choda tha toh maine khud ka ghar liya tha na? waha
Riya: oh woh waala ghar
Arjun: haan ji
Riya: lekin woh toh….
A loud cough broke their conversation. They turned to see Rathore standing at a distance.
Arjun: Sam aaj tujhe kuch zyaada khaasi nahi aa rahi hai?
Rathore raised his eyebrow: meri khaasi ki wajah sirf ek hi hai, khaasi ki bhi aur(glancing at Riya) hichki ki bhi
Riya: oh god sir! aapne kabhi bataya nahi ki aapko mujhse allergy hai? kitne laparwah hai aap, aapko pata hai fir bhi baar-baar mere peeche aa jaate not done sir, thoda toh khayal rakhiye apna
Arjun pursed his lips trying to contain his laughter. Rathore glared at Riya who was staring back at him.
Rathore: jab tumhe itni fikar hai toh tum chali kyun nahi jaati?
Riya: maine kab kaha ki mujhe aapki fikar hai? main toh yeh keh rahi thi aapko apni fikar honi chahiye
Unable to contain, Arjun let out a laugh quickly turned it into a cough and looked away. Rathore glared at Arjun and closed his eyes to control himself.
Rathore: Riya please, thodi der jaogi? Mujhe Arjun se akele mein baat karni hai!
Riya: of course sir, please kehne waale ko kabhi mana nahi karna chahiye (Rathore heaved a sigh of relief but she added) main aapki tarah thodi hu?
Sameer balled his fists. Riya turned to Arjun.
Riya: bye!!
Arjun: bye Riya
Riya stared into Rathore’s eyes, flipped her hair behind her shoulder and walked away. Sameer rolled his eyes and went towards Arjun.
Arjun: ek baat bata, teri problem kya hai usse?
Sameer: dekha nahi kya tune use? lagti model hai lekin chali hai police officer banne
Arjun squinted: tum sirf isliye use kam samajte ho kyunki woh khubsurat hai along with being efficient ? that’s a sick mentality
Sameer rolled his eyes: ha, ha tere saamne thodi use kuch keh sakte hai?
Arjun: Aisa nahi hai Sameer, aur tum ye jaante ho, tum galat ho aur ye baat men tumhe shuru se kehta aaya hu
Sameer: meri chod tu teri bata, ye sab hua kaise? Aur Arjun….affair? woh bhi tu?!?! Matlab I know teri shaadi ke haalat theek nahi the and yea I agree ki kahi na kahi uski wajah se Roshni pakdi gayi, that’s very good and all but seriously? Extra-marital? Aur woh Dhoke se divorce papers par sign lena? mujhe toh abhi bhi yakeen nahi ho raha hai, ki tere jaisa Harishchandra aisa kar sakta hai
Arjun turned towards the city: aur mujhe bhi yakeen nahi hota ki tu mera itna acha dost hokar, kisi ladki ke baare mein aisa soch sakta hai (Sameer was about to interrupt but he shrugged) but I guess we all have our flaws, maybe it makes us human
Sameer smiled softly and leaned on the railing taking in the fresh breeze.
Sameer: shayad but it’s still shocking ki tu!! (Arjun looked at him amusement) you know…affair?
Arjun shook his head as they shared a laugh.
Arjun: maine Riya ke saath bitaya hua ek bhi pal kabhi bhi regret nahi kiya Sam, ha kabhi-kabhi dar zaroor lagta tha ki mummy-papa ko pata chalega toh kya hoga? woh use kabhi accept karenge ya nahi
Sameer raised his eyebrow: ye sawaal nahi aaya ki tera kya haal karenge?
Arjun smiled sadly: mera kya hona tha? papa ki taraf se thodi aur nafrat aur maa ki taraf se thodi aur naraazgi
Sameer placed a comforting hand on his shoulder: Arjun they do love you, I hope you know that
Arjun sighed: mujhe nahi pata Sam, mujhe kuch nahi pata………………………
