However, what an awful film, awful story and awful acting. Don’t know what was worse, this or Tubelight or Race 3.

Bharat

With a title like ‘Bharat’ you might expect an immensely patriotic (bordering on jingoistic) film but that’s not the case here. Phew! This is the story of a man- his highs, his lows, his wins, his losses. It’s a tale that spans decades from 1947 to 2010. You live and love his life and the people in it along with him. It’s a filmyand sometimes overly dramatic narrative but I was captivated. You’re either in it for the long haul or you’ll shrug your shoulders in confusion. I believed in it even when Amitabh Bachchan’s songs saved a ship from pirates. Where else do you get such entertainment?
Bharat, a young boy of 8, flees Lahore during partition along with his family but some unforeseen circumstances divide his parivaar in half. A parting promise made to his father becomes the axis on which his world revolves from that point on. But this is a small part of a much larger journey. He dances in circuses, romances his boss, travels the high sees, and is always- and I do mean always, the hero. Basically Bharat is Salman Khan through and through. Or perhaps it’s the other way around.
The man has millions of fans but I’ve come to the conclusion that Ali Abbas Zafar is possibly Bhai’s biggest supporter. From ‘Sultan’, ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ to now this, Mr. Zafar has created characters that couldn’t be played by anyone else. He directs Salman in a larger than life manner and his screenplay practically worships the ground he walks on. Honestly, these are some of Salman’s best films so more power to the writer and director. Ali enjoys the typical Bollywood tropes and uses them without fear. Tears at the border, the song in the desert, dialogues evoking every emotion possible. He uses anything and everything at his disposal. And it largely works. There were times when I wished the screenplay was stronger since the ambition outweighs the story here but when you have to make your audience laugh, cry, dance, and clap constantly there’s only so much room for other things.
A sore point in this always moving spectacle was the music. Both films I mentioned above had incredible tunes but here that magic is missing. ‘Zinda’ sticks out but the rest are quite forgettable. The dialogues are effective and there’s a generous amount of humor throughout the 2.5 hours. I belly laughed at several occasions. I also shed a tear or two. Color me amused.
Like I said, Salman is Bharat and Bharat is Salman. He talks with swagger, he dances in his own unique style, he cries for his family and you’re hooked. This is a superstar keeping his fans happy and no complaints here. He’s the most charming 70-year old I’ve ever seen. There was much controversy around the female lead’s casting but Katrina Kaif does a fine job. She has worked on her diction and even though it’s still not perfect we’ve come to like Ms. Kaif’s mannerisms. And while I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship I wish more of Kumud’s life was shown. She’s a brave woman, well ahead of her time and it’s a character I would’ve liked to spend more time with. Disha Patani has killer abs. That’s all you take from her role but we didn’t need this movie to tell us that. Sunil Grover as Bharat’s best friend is terrific. Known for his humor, the man can also move a bitter heart. But his pairing with Nora Fatehi made me chuckle. Frankly, I didn’t buy it. But hey, I bought Salman beating up bad guys at 70 so who am I to say.
Ali Abbas Zafar has created a classy and massy film that has a clear goal in mind. If you know and like the goal, you’ll be a happy camper. ‘Sultan’ and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ were better movies but ‘Bharat’ worked for me on many levels as well. After some all-around disappointment from Mr. Khan’s last film (as well as his contemporaries’ disasters) this is a refreshing change. Go in a fan, go in a believer and you’ll be just fine. Itni chashni toh banti hai.

Bharat Third Day Early Estimate
Saturday 08 June 00.00 ISTBox Office India Trade Network

![]()
Bharat has seen a drop of around 25% on its third day as it collects in the 22-24 crore nett range which takes the first three day total to 95 crore nett. The drop is normal for the third day after Eid but that drop on the second day was probably 5-7% more than it should have bean which has meant the film has not hit the 100 crore nett for over the three day weekend.
There are many places coming of the Eid holidays so the the collections slowly got normal levels. There is still a Eid holiday boost in these numbers as UP and Bihar remain at high levels. The plus is that East Punjab which has no Eid affect after the national holiday has stabilized and cities like Chandagarh and Ludhiana are showing 10-12% drops after the 45-50% drop on day two.
It will be a mixed bag on Saturday as well with centres in UP and Bihar coming off the holiday period and these places will drop more. It will be about East Punjab now going upwards on Saturday which will be the key. If this circuit shows a good upward trajectory then on Sunday it will mean solid growth all over the country as it will be back to a normal Sunday playing field.
