Bharat Movie Rating

In Bollywood, a film that covers an entire lifespan of a character is very rare and is only seen in biopics. Hollywood has done that quite often in fictional films but in our cinema, it has rarely been witnessed. Blockbuster director Ali Abbas Zafar, after delivering two Rs. 300 crore grossers, is now back with BHARAT. It stars Salman Khan in the lead and he’ll be seen in various avatars as he ages through the film. The looks of the superstar has been appreciated but will these praises be there for the film as well? Will BHARAT work despite being such an atypical entertainer? Let’s analyse.

BHARAT is about the journey of a man and a nation together. The story begins in 1947 in Mirpur village near Lahore. Bharat (Salman Khan) is a kid and his father Gautam Kumar (Jackie Shroff) dotes on him. This is the time of Partition and Bharat and his family are compelled to leave for India. At the railway station, Bharat is climbing on top of the train with his sister Gudiya (Barbiee Sharma) when she falls down on the station. Gautam has already managed to safely climb atop the train but he goes down to search Gudiya. But before that, he gives his watch to Bharat and assures him that he'll be back. He also tells him to go with his mother Janki (Sonali Kulkarni), brother and sister to Gautam's sister Jamuna (Ayesha Raza Mishra)'s shop, Hind Ration Store in Delhi. Bharat and his family cross over to India and thus go to the ration shop as asked by Gautam. They are quite poor and Bharat starts doing odd jobs. Bharat soon grows up as a dashing young man (Salman Khan) and he and his childhood friend Vilayati (Sunil Grover) join a circus. Here he comes across the sizzling Radha (Disha Patani). Both Bharat and Radha get into a relationship while also doing death defying stunts. However when Bharat realises his stunts might be influencing youngsters to do the same without proper training, he quits the circus. He goes to employment exchange where he meets Kumud (Katrina Kaif) and gets smitten by her. Bharat and Vilayati are sent to Middle East to work in the oil fields. The money is good but not as much as he expected to earn. Hence, Bharat decides to work in the dangerous underground mines. Kumud who is now in love with Bharat stops him from taking up the project since she's aware that the risk is quite high. Bharat however still takes up the work. All is well at first but 21 days later, an explosion takes place in the underground mine. It seems near impossible for Bharat and his other colleagues to come out alive. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

BHARAT is based on the 2014 Korean flick Ode To My Father (directed by Yoon Je-kyoon; written by Park Su-jin). The story has been Indianized very well and the important events of post-Independence India like the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, rise of unemployment, the 1983 Cricket World Cup final, era of liberalisation and globalisation, emerging trend of redevelopment etc are well inserted in the narrative. Ali Abbas Zafar and Varun V Sharma’s screenplay is effective and keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. The emotional sequences especially are quite well written. Ali Abbas Zafar and Varun V Sharma’s dialogues are simple and sharp, and even quite funny at places.

Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction is topnotch. Unlike his previous films, this film is in a different zone but Ali handles it all like a pro. The film changes tracks every 15-20 minutes and to handle such a film is not a cakewalk. For instance, after the tragic Partition scene, the film gets a bit comic and even quite colourful in the circus sequence. The switch however happens quite seamlessly and this can be seen throughout the film. On the flipside however, the humour is forced in a few scenes and doesn’t make the desired impact. Also, the National Anthem scene seems unwarranted for and could have been written in a better way.

BHARAT begins very well, showing the 70-year-old Bharat and his life in Delhi. One might feel that the makers perhaps have shown too much at this point. But one need not worry because there’s a lot that the principal character goes through in his life and it slowly gets unveiled. The childhood portion is moving while the circus scenes are vibrant and entertaining. The real fun however begins once Bharat meets Kumud and later when he starts working in the Middle East. Till this point, there hasn’t been much conflict in the tale. But it finally enters the narrative once Bharat and his teammates get trapped. The manner in which the film goes on a high at this point is seen to be believed. The second half gets better thankfully. The scenes of the ship are quite good and watch out for how the humour is so well infused in the sequence where the pirates attack the vessel! The best however is reserved for the pre-climax. An interesting development takes place here and it’ll surely bring tears to the eyes of viewers, a la BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN [2015]. The film ends on a justified note.

LAUGH RIOT: Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif’s MOST HILARIOUS Rapid Fire | SRK | Aamir | Bharat

Salman Khan as expected rocks the show. He is dashing and entertaining in each and every avatar. And he seems convincing in all these makeovers. In the circus scene, he’s supposed to be below 30 years ago and it comes out just right. Even as an old man, he fits the part and makes subtle changes in his speech, body language etc. His fans are surely in for a treat! Katrina Kaif looks ravishing and performance wise, she is first rate. She gets to essay a very well-written part and she does justice to it. Her conversation with Salman while munching on shawarma is quite memorable. Sunil Grover gets a lot of screen time and is almost like the second lead of the film. And he makes good use of the opportunity and would surely be appreciated. Jackie Shroff’s screen time is very limited but he has a crucial part and he makes his presence felt. Disha Patani is sizzling and has a fine screen presence. Tabu (Meher) has a powerful cameo. Aasif Sheikh (Mehek’s husband) stands out with his characterization and humour. The kid actors - Barbiee Sharma, Kabir Sajid (young Bharat), Aaryan Prajapati (young Vilayati) and Matin Rey Tangu (young Jimmy) are adorable. Nora Fatehi (Sussan) looks quite hot but is wasted. Sonali Kulkarni, Kashmira Irani (Mehek), Kumud Kumar Mishra (Keemat), Ayesha Raza Mishra, Shashank Arora (Chhote), Rajiv Gupta (Gulati) and Ivan Rodrigues (Gupta) are decent. Meiyang Chang is hardly there but his look is quite badass.

Vishal-Shekhar's music is good but could have been better. 'Slow Motion' is the top song of the lot followed by 'Chashni'. 'Aithey Aa' is well choreographed. 'Zinda' is exhilarating. 'Tupreya', 'Aaya Na Tu' and 'Thap Thap' are okay. Julius Packiam's background score is better and exhilarating, especially in the emotional scenes. Vaibhavi Merchant and Adil Shaikh's choreography is appealing, especially in 'Slow Motion' and 'Aithey Aa'.

Marcin Laskawiec's cinematography is captivating and some scenes are very well captured. Rajnish Hedao's production design is quite rich. Ashley Rebello, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Veera Kapur Ee and Lolveen Bains's costumes are authentic and also glamorous. The ones worn by Katrina Kaif and Disha Patani stand out. SeaYoung Oh, Parvez Shaikh and Dave Judge's action is not too gory and is appropriate. Rameshwar Bhagat's editing falters in a few places but overall, it’s commendable, considerable the expansive storyline.

On the whole, BHARAT is a super-entertainer with emotions as its strong USP and Salman Khan like never before. The superb combination of Salman Khan, emotions and the release period [Eid] will ensure fireworks at the ticket windows. At the box office, it will fetch bumper profits for all concerned.

‘Bharat’ Movie Review: Salman Khan’s versatility is on full display in this epic drama

Sameer Jhaon June 5, 2019

Directed By: Ali Abbas Zafar

Produced By:

Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Varun Grover, Jackie Shroff

Bollywood Bubble Rating: 4/5

Salman Khan is back to doing what he knows best. He has yet again delivered a masala entertainer that ticks all the right boxes. With Sunil Grover, Salman makes you laugh. And without him, he makes you cry. Transitioning between several years, ‘Bharat’ keeps you glued to your seats with its grand scale and Salman’s avant garde performance.

Coming to the plot, Bharat (Salman) is a resident of Pakistan (Mirpur) before the partition. He has to shift to India, and in the process, he loses his father and sister. Fast forward a few years and he finds a job in the circus, but quits it when he finds out that young boys are emulating his stunts and injuring themselves. He then goes to the gulf to extract oil after meeting Kumud Raina (Katrina Kaif). To find out what happens next, you’ll have to watch the movie.

In the course of the movie, Bharat’s daredevilry and his pure heart wins him a lot of admirers and establishes him as a true blue Bollywood hero. A lot of credit must go to Ali Abbas Zafar who knows the pulse of the audience and gives them just the right dose of Entertainment. In ‘Bharat’, he creates contrasting moods – one minute you are laughing out loud and another minute, you are biting your tongue in anticipation. Sunil Grover as Vilayati delivers a winning performance too and you hope that this film will pave the way for his long innings in Bollywood. Katrina Kaif as Kumud Raina/Madam Sir is spot on and perfect for the part.

When it comes to the technical department, ‘Bharat’ doesn’t disappoint at all – from grand sets that recreate the era of partition to the climax scene at the Wagah Border, a lot of credit must go to the person in charge of creating the sets. Ali Abbas has a way (you’ve seen it in the ‘Tiger’ franchisee as well) of mixing great cinematography with kickass music and he does the same in ‘Bharat’.

Last but not the least, the screenplay by Ali Abbas and Varun Sharma expertly manages to adapt a Korean film according to Indian sensibilities. And hats off to them for that.

Final verdict:

What are you waiting for? Go watch it with your entire family.

BHARAT MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA

Renuka Vyavahare, Jun 5, 2019, 10.10 AM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.5/5

Story: A little boy who is forced to be responsible early on, grows up with no regret of a non- existent childhood. He in fact makes it his life goal to put his family before him. The film follows the journey of Bharat (Salman Khan) over the course of several decades as he navigates the ups and downs of life.

Review: An official adaptation of South Korean drama Ode to my Father (2014), Bharat focuses on the personal and professional choices of its righteous hero, set against the social backdrop of its time.

Separated from his father and sister during the Indo-Pak partition in 1947 as a child, Bharat decides to dedicate his entire life to keeping the promise he’d made to his missing father. He takes it upon himself as the eldest son of the house to look after his mother and siblings, hoping their family would reunite some day. From 1947 to 2010, the narrative traverses a period of over six decades. You see Bharat jumping risky odd jobs to make ends meet.

He even falls in love with the feisty Kumud (Katrina Kaif), who is brave and honest enough to make the first move on him. “I love you. Shaadi ki umra ho gayi hai meri. Tumse shaadi karna chahti hoon,” she says without batting an eye. She proposes marriage without fearing rejection. “I do and say what I think is right,” she adds and doesn’t mind teasing Salman, “Tum thodey self-obsessed nahi ho?” She was impressive even in Zero and Bharat is Katrina’s best acting part till date. Her chemistry with Salman feels natural and she does a good job at portraying a woman who is self assured without being cocky. She is equal, even superior to her man and Ali Abbas Zafar makes no bones about it. Her hair is a different story though. The grey streaks are inconsistent as her character ages and the unruly curls feel unnecessary.

What also stands out in Ali’s writing is how he places Sunil Grover’s character as Vilayati, Bharat’s best friend and confidante. Our best friends are our soulmates, constant companions and it reflects here beautifully. Grover does compete justice to his well-written role and deserves more such significant parts. Sonali Kulkarni and Jackie Shroff are terrific as always.

Interestingly, there’s a hidden Sooraj Barjatya in Salman Khan, somewhere. In times of the ‘hookup culture’ being glorified in movies and web shows, his films with old school values often aim to get the families together and that stands out. He acts well and looks good. Salman’s extreme closeness to his real family (parents and siblings), makes him ideal to play Bharat as he embodies his character’s traits, thus making it more convincing.

Ali on the contrary, plays a balancing act. He infuses emotions with ample fun Salman elements that will get his diehard fans to whistle. He mounts the meandering story in an unhurried manner on a huge canvas. While he manages to keep you hooked despite his complex source material and misplaced songs, Bharat has too many things happening at once and too many time leaps. This eventually makes the movie an exhausting, scattered watch despite the entertainment, humour and nobility it propagates.

Also, the ‘intention to inspire’ is a bit in your face. While emotional manipulation happens in every film, the fact that it’s evident here makes it a tad overbearing. The reverence is blatant. A little subtlety and crisp editing would have done wonders.

Bharat is well-intentioned, entertaining and doesn’t succumb to the trappings of commercial potboilers. The fact that it tries a bit too hard to prove that, is its problem.

Bharat Movie Review: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif film is an out and out entertainer with solid emotional connectMoviesBharat Movie ReviewGaurang Chauhan

Critic Rating:

Bharat Movie Review is out now! Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Bharat stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sunil Grover, Aasif Sheikh, Jackie Shroff, Sonali Kulkarni and Tabu among others.

Bharat Movie ReviewBharat Movie Review

After disappointing fans with his last two Eid releases - Race 3 and Tubelight - Salman Khan returns with an emotional entertainer in Ali Abbas Zafar's Bharat. The movie is about a 70-year-old man Bharat (Salman Khan), who takes us through an incredible journey of his colourful life and that of the country he is named after - Bharat aka India. From 1947 to 2010, we meet a hoard of characters - from his childhood best friend Vilayati (Sunil Grover), his father (Jackie Shroff), his mother (Sonali Kulkarni) to the love of his life - Madam Sir aka Kumud (Katrina Kaif) and many more.

The best thing about this Ali Abbas Zafar directorial is that it is a typical Salman Khan entertainer that most of us have enjoyed over the years and yet it is different from all those films. The reason Ali Abbas Zafar succeeds time and again and delivers a Salman Khan blockbuster is that he gives his fans what they want without losing his own voice as a filmmaker. The movie is filled with humour, often funny and sometimes cringe-worthy but throughout its runtime, what impacts the audience most is the solid emotional connect. The story itself is such that it'll instantly connect with everyone on a very humane level.

And despite its two-and-half-hour-plus runtime, it doesn't bore you. The chronicles of Bharat and Vilayati are often outlandish and bizarre but it is Salman Khan and Sunil Grover's earnestness and their great camaraderie that keeps the momentum going even when the movie goes down. Ali Abbas Zafar's direction is taut. He has helmed all the emotional scenes quite tactfully and those scenes are bound to hit you. You will find yourself shedding tears at several junctures in the film.

The cinematography by Marcin Laskawiec is beautiful. The music by Vishal-Shekhar is foot-tapping and catchy. And even though most of the songs are situational, they blend in well with the visuals. Special mention to Aaya Na Tu sung by Jyoti Nooran. All I can say is, just keep those tissues handy. The editing by Rameshwar S. Bhagat is good but could've been better and several moments (especially in the first half) could've easily been snipped out to make the film shorter.

Coming to the performances, it is a Salman Khan show all the way. He has done justice to the titular character. From being a 20-year-old up until in his 50s, Salman has excelled. However, his performance as a 70-year-old is uneven and hard to digest. Sunil Grover has performed well. From comedy to emotional scenes, Sunil has pulled it off like a pro. After Patakha last year and now Bharat, we wish to see more of him on the big screen.

Katrina Kaif as Madam Sir has looked drop dead gorgeous. And it's great to see that after Tiger Zinda Hai and Zero, Katrina has once again delivered a great performance. She is a natural in the film and her chemistry with Salman Khan works wonders. Jackie Shroff in a brief role is the soul of the film. His performance leaves a lasting impact. Satish Kaushik is funny in a special appearance. Aasif Sheikh gets his moment to shine. Sonali Kulkarni is of the first rate. Disha Patani, Kumud Mishra and Shashank Arora are wasted. Tabu in a guest appearance is good.

The problem with Bharat is majorly in the first half. As I mentioned above, the first half is filled with cringe-worthy moments that feel straight out of an '80s potboiler. Nora Fatehi's whole sequence is disappointing. Also, the makeup of the characters leaves a lot to be desired. Shown to be in their 60s and 70s, almost all the characters including Salman Khan never look their age and often look more in their 40s or 50s. The whole sequence on the ship is funny but inconsequential. And the less I say about the whole circus bit is better.

Overall, Ali Abbas Zafar's Bharat takes you on an emotional ride and leaves you with a smile on your face. With good performances by Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sunil Grover and Jackie Shroff, Bharat is an out and out entertainer.

Bharat Movie Review: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Sunil Grover deliver a BLOCKBUSTER this Eid

  • 0

Movie: Bharat

Bharat Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

Bharat Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sunil Grover, Disha Patani and others.

Bharat Movie Stars: 4/5

"Yeh sher buddha zaroor ho gaya hai. Lekin shikaar karna nahi bhula," says Salman Khan few moments into Bharat. You can almost hear the 53-year-old star roaring under the mask of a 70-year-old man, warning not to mess with him at the box office. Salman takes over Eid 2019 with the help from Katrina Kaif and Ali Abbas Zafar in the form of Bharat. The movie's plot is based on a Korean movie Ode To My Father. The movie also stars Sunil Grover, who plays Salman's best friend. Bharat is divided into five eras. Bharat's childhood, his teenage life, his adulthood, his mid-life and his old age. The movie recalls historic instances like the 1947 partition, Jawaharlal Nehru's death, the 1983 Cricket World Cup, Manmohan Singh's liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation plans and the present times (in this case 2010) to tell the story. Did it work? Absolutely. Here's my review of Bharat:

Story:

Bharat is a story about a man named Bharat (played by Salman Khan). He was born in Mirpur, Pakistan, lived with his parents and siblings. Tragedy strikes when India and Pakistan partition is announced. Bharat and his family leave for India. However, due to some unfortunate circumstances, Bharat's father (played by Jackie Shroff) stays back in Mirpur. Before he bids farewell, he promises Bharat that he will meet him at a store called Hind in Old Delhi. It is run by Bharat's aunt.

Years pass, there is no sign of the father. Bharat undergoes several life experiences with his best friend (Sunil Grover). This includes his act in a Russian circus where he rode in the Well of Death. His job as a labourer in oil mines of the Middle East. His stint in the merchant navy and eventually taking over his aunt's store in Old Delhi. He takes up these various jobs to live up to the promise he made to his father of taking care of the family. We must say, Bharat did a fabulous job at it.

Salman, Katrina and Sunil shine:

Bharat the character has various layers. From being a responsible son to a loving father and a caring boyfriend, the movie shows the different facets of the character. It has worked wonders for the movie. Salman takes his role seriously and we see him transform with every era he portrays. I couldn't help remember Salman from the 90s when I watched him dance with Disha Patani's Radha in the movie. The de-aging was done flawlessly. He held on to his charm from the decade as well.

As the movie progresses, his on-screen age moves forward as well. Salman has made sure he distinguishes each era with his own charm. He did it brilliantly.

Salman's performance is taken to the next level by the fabulous Katrina. The actress, who plays Kumud aka Salman's love interest, was outstanding. I loved the fact that her off-screen chemistry with Salman, as seen in her recent interviews with him, was incorporated with such each in the movie, making their relationship so real. I loved watching them create magic on screen with their banter and their romantic chemistry. But one of Bharat's highlight was Katrina had few of the best punch dialogues which she delivered effortlessly. Apart from her acting, she stole my heart with her killer looks.

Another stunner in the movie was Sunil Grover. With Bharat, he proved that he could steal the spotlight with a Khan by his side. Every frame that he shared with Salman, Sunil managed to grab the audience's attention and keep it on him. I think I would want to see him pair up with other leading stars in the industry as well. The other co-stars have done a great job and helping the movie come to shape.

Different storytelling:

As for the story, Bharat is a well-told tale. Bharat shapes up as promised in the trailers. The first half is crisp, narrating a tight story. With every scene unfolding, the curiosity to find out about Bharat's life increases. The movie doesn't waste screen time on unnecessary drama and gets to the point quickly. There is hardly a moment when you are distracted. The second half focuses on Bharat's hunt for his long-lost father and sister. While the pace reduces, the second half is high on emotional value. There are a couple of times when you tear up before you completely break down.

Another element that stands out in Bharat was Zafar's style of intertwining iconic historic moments of India for better storytelling. While he sends shivers down your spine recreating the partition scene, he shows Bharat's journey with the three fields India loves: politics, entertainment and cricket. He uses Jawaharlal Nehru's death, India's victory in the 1983 World Cup and Shah Rukh Khan's era in Bollywood to establish the twists and turns of the story. An interesting and different take, I must say.

High on music:

How can I write a Bharat review without mentioning about the songs, especially Zinda? The song is spread across the movie and ignites goosebumps every time it is played. The background score perfectly blends with the moment, making Bharat a great watch. Ali Abbas Zafar has done a great job with Bharat.

Final verdict:

The movie comes to a complete circle in the climax. There are no questions left unanswered, leaving you satisfied. You laugh, you weep and you just feel nice for Bharat. The movie is treated like a grandpa telling a couple of tales to his grand-kids and it does it beautifully. Watch Bharat for it will definitely bring a huge smile on your face. I never felt so heartwarming since Bhajrangi Bhaijaan. Suggestion: Watch it with an avid Salman Khan fan in a single screen for a memory of a lifetime.
