Politely disagree with you here.
Most of RKR's roles have been sidekicks, small supporting roles of low relevance or low-budget /under-promoted movie roles, in which he has managed to leave an impact. That alone speaks a lot. Merely spouting Box office figures means nothing, because you are willing to ignore the big names associated with many of those projects. For the sake of a hypothetical example, even if Hrithik may have had 6 disasters back to back, I would have still lauded him in a 7th movie for his acting and predicted a commercial success, if it so merited.
That being said, am neither a fanboy nor a fan shark; so don't be disappointed if I don't indulge in fan wars, one way or the other.
You kinda answered your question as to why RKR is not in this movie and why I brought up the commercial variable in this topic. It's simply because he doesn't have THAT appeal. By casting him, you are already severely restricting yourself to fewer eyeballs from the opening go, as evident on his box office numbers. Numbers never lie. He has no pull in ground market barring getting praises on the online portal, stree withstanding and even that was lead by a much bigger STAR in Shradha.
I am a firm believer of either you have it or you don't when it comes to audience appeal. The impact you have been referring to has never made the audience go, "hey let's go watch an RKR movie in the theatre." Let's not blur the line between star/ actor. We are talking about apples and oranges here. You can substitute RKR in the most iconic movies of other stars, I will put my life savings on the line he still won't' command any fanbase because he has no star appeal, none whatsoever. At best, that man is an Amol Palekar of this generation. Nothing wrong with it all but there's a reason aspired actors in Bollywood tell themselves, "be an Amitabh Bachchan, not Amol Palekar." But you are right, let's agree to disagree, move on and let the numbers of this movie speak for itself.
