Mad Men S7
When I watched CNN's the "2000s", it raved about Mad Men. In particular, it raved about the women of Mad Men. I did not get it. The series moves at a languid pace and features misogynistic men cheating on their wives and treating women like trash. The women tend to be background noise. But their characters have grown. The men have remained somewhat static in their behavior. The women though have evolved.

Peggy Olson, Don Draper's mousy secretary from the first episode struts into the McCann Erickson office in the finale. Cigarette in her lips, sunglasses for her hangover, and a lewd painting in hand; she is ready to smash the patriarchy.

Joan Holloway the ultimate secretary and office manager has morphed into a businesswoman. She clawed her way into handling accounts at Sterling Cooper. When McCann Erickson wants to push her back into being a secretary she starts her own production business.

Betty Draper puffs a cigarette in her kitchen. She started off as a woman who gave up everything to be a good wife to Don. She is dying of cancer. Everything is being taken away. But for the first time in her life she is doing everything on her own terms.

Sally Draper has grown into a teenager who is as stubborn and self-driven as her parents.

There is a wow moment that sinks in the final episode as you realize that these are the women who have carved out the path for career women today. It makes the whole journey satisfying.

PS: IMO Don Draper has the epiphany of "Buy the World a Coke" at the retreat and goes back to create that ad.

Short Term 12

One of Brie Larson's lesser known indie films. It is a sometimes heartbreaking sometimes uplifting examination of group homes in the United States. Brie Larson's Grace is one of the adults who works at "Short Term 12" one such home for troubled teens. As she supports these teens, she has her own demons from the past that get in the way. This is a stunningly honest and well written film about coming to terms with the issues in one's life.

Notes

It is heartwarming to see that almost the entire cast including Lakeith Stanfield, Rami Malek, and Stephanie Beatriz have gone on to carve a name for themselves.

I love how Brie continues to work with Destin Daniel Cretton. She worked with him on Glass House and will be in Just Mercy as well.

I am really curious how Destin Daniel Cretton will handle Shang Chi his major MCU directorial film. Going by his track record it will have some serious emotional graphs for the characters.

Flight (2012)
Captain Whip Whitaker saves the day when his plane suffers a mechanical failure. Loss of life-4 passengers, 2 crew.

But pretty soon investigators latch on to Whip's alcohol problem and his positive toxicology reports.

Denzel Washington is well, DW. Kelly Reilly as his heroin addict girlfriend added nothing to the movie as an actor apart from showcasing Whip's alcohol addiction problem. So, the shots of her eviction juxtaposed with those of the flight were unnecessary and seem to suggest a principal role other than just serving as a device for Whip's condition, which isnt the case.

Film is good only because of Denzel. With a weaker actor, there's no way one would be able to sit through this movie. You know he keeps going back to alcohol and you know he will probably have an awakening of conscience at the Federal Agency NTSB hearing.

Grudge Match (2013)

Geriatric Pittsburgh boxers Henry "Razor" Sharp (Stallone) and Billy "The Kid' McDonnen (DeNiro) gear up for their grudge match.

Gully Boy was Ah-ma-zing ... One of the best ones to have come out this year! ... 4/5 fosho ... (Tho it doesn't have a repeat value for me .. it deals with many social and serious issues which don't fit the entertainment quota for me .. lol) ... Don't give it a miss .. watch it ASAP if you haven't already!

I missed to mention but I adored "Ranveer and Alia" onscreen ... they have tremendous onscreen chemistry .. there's a lot which can be done with these two! ... Really after GB, I wanna watch more of these two in different genres of movies ... Enough of DP-RS and Varun-Alia .. give me more of these two! ... They bring out so much just by standing right beside each other! ... My new ship needs to sail at least "onscreen" ... 😆

Finally watched Wizard of the Oz, full.
What a beautiful movie, although it is mostly a fairy tale along the lines of Alice.

The songs, the production value(for that time, although not as impressive Metropolis), the story, screenplay, acting and toto all were good, but what I felt the best about the movie was the scope it left for debates.
You can see the movie as a fairy tale for kids, you can see it as a personification of the contemporary power struggle which impacts the common man, you can simply have it like Dorothy just had a dream.
Beautiful movie.

Changeling (2008)
Set in 1928, Los Angeles, single mother Christine Collins arrives home to find her 9 year old son missing.

Based on the incidents of the Winevile Chicken Coop Murders, the movie is a hard watch. The movie moves at a leisurely pace like set in real time. No sudden edits and stuff. I understand this is classic Clint Eastwood style which is probably why he's had such a prolific career as a director.

The events depicted in this movie led to a change in California law that made it illegal for police to confine anyone to a psychiatric facility without a warrant.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
A historical movie based on the life of TE Lawrence. British campaigns in Aqaba and other parts of Arabia against the Ottoman Empire during World War II are depicted. Lawrence is shown as an effeminate and inconsequential sort of man who yet happens to help the Arabian factions he's ingratiated himself to by treading where the native Bedouins fear.

American war correspondent Jackson Bentley makes Lawrence a hero...the original embedded reporter I guess. How much of the movie is true is anybody's guess.

Oh and an actor who worked in some Hindi movies, IS Johar plays a small role. And gosh he's a bit repulsive. Apparently the role was first offered to Dilip Kumar.

Btw, Akbar jehan, wife of Sheikh Abdullah, daughter of Jewish hotelier Henry Nedou, current Omar Abdullah's grandmother was once married to TE Lawrence.

Finally saw Gully Boy
One time watch

I guess its not my kind of movie, couldn't connect at all. Ranveer was good, Alia was Ok , I didn't understand her role, she came across as desperate and plain annoying.

Ranveer did it well. His subdued persona had a good impact

The actor who played MC Sher guy had a tremendous screen personality, when he came on screen, the others including Ranveer faded away.

Kalki's role was weak, all she did was find opportunities to kiss. I mean what a let down.

definitely one time watch 6/10

Kalank : kalank in my Life is i watched it for 2.30 hours.
Bad vfx , Mediocre acting , can ark act when sober , th only time he tries when he is drunk , Sanju is done with the whole thing , baba aagaye free ke paise ke lie, set look unauthentic , kahin se bhi pre partiton laga hi nahi , varun dhawan tries but his story is so bungled up and that bull scene is meme in itself , who passed it , like you don't have eyes , sonakshi is good when she has to die on screen lootera and this, less about madhuri and alia better.
Story is like ekta Kapoor tv serial rejected script.
Why was it made , trash boring pathetic.

Sonchidiya : best film of 2019 hands down.
Sushant is giving underappreciated performance first in kedarnath , and now this , unfortunately won't be talked about coz my top stars isn't in it and isnt hit.
Beautiful cinematography, kalank should learn from it.
Amazing dialogues , action , kind of Indian western , with good story arc and keep on your toes.
Manoj Bajpayee , Ranveer shorey ,ashutosh rana , bhumi all do excellent job and abhishek chaube direction is perfection
Do watch it.

Rome Akbar walter : Decent movie, it could have been better ,however way better than predictable as f**k Raazi was , spy movies need to have new things and this was good.
Jaggu dada is a great actor , wonder tiger didnt get even a 1 percent of his acting skills and is garbage .
John was Decent but his body doesnt support the role need better actor and with some realistic human body.

Mard ko dard nahi hota : a well intention unique film in Bollywood, with nice quirks and wit , with some good action scene , few gets repetitive as hero looks like only get one kind of kick he keeps repeating.
Gulsan is good as double role , he hams the villain part and bring sincerity in karate master , enjoyable.
Radhika badan is the talented patakha and now this , girl have screen presence and acting skills to match , if got good opportunities to work with talented directors she will grow too.
Slow motion is too much and length could have been shortened .
Good movie.

Kesari : i think the biggest problem of the movie is there isn't much meat to the story .
Soldiers fought for the hours to delay Afghan invading , Akshay character is too much good doers , why can't they show human as humans in biopics or historical.
So the first half is okay until the fight start which have some good and some bad parts.
It's still a one time watch ,there is nothing that will make you repeatedly watch it.

Tashkent files : Given Vivek agnihotri is average director , film does suffer from Mediocre dialogues and inconsistency.
Too much loudness.
That's said script is good for a *courtroom drama procedure , give evidence and counter evidence on both sides and keeps up the pace and interest.
Everyone knows cia and kgb have been killing people for a century now ,but usa n russia citizens eniess like they haven't created wars killed millions of peoplel kids and destroyed nationse. anyway it make me look up for shashtri facts so it does it's job lol ...critics were triggered for no reason , but they are low iq morons who cheere for foe but only want their views out on world , it doesn't even go into Congress bjp politics lol ...e
