Never knew that word 'gharelu' is offensive.😆 What's wrong if someone wish to have gharelu wife? And why can't a working woman be gharelu as well?

Like he wants to emphasise on her "proper wife" type qualities now. Usually, when someone highlights such qualities and downplays those like ambition, drive, independence, it is to try and put out that kind of image. Where he is the man of the house and she is the woman in the traditional terms. You can't suddenly after marriage say stuff that will be misinterpreted for sure. Gharelu is not a compliment.

Also, Deepika has said that she likes to organise stuff at home and maybe take care of things, cook, clean or whatever. Sure. If somebody says this about themselves, it is another matter. But when their partner uses such a word for them, then it is a problem.

Also, while I don't think the word itself is demeaning because I've seen many guys who like to stay home instead of go out and party on weekends or cook and clean. But this word is usually used as a way to describe women who are domestic instead of male who are domestic. Maybe women just don't think to use this word in regard with men. But because this word is usually addressing women, that's why it seems to have a misogynistic connotation where you're trying to reduce a woman to being a good homemaker only.

This is really bad and I hope Deepika drills some sense into him for this.

it all comes down to ranveer's interpretation of the word, ranveer did not use it in a offensive way, for you gharelu may not be a compliment but ranveer was saying the word with the intention of a compliment, i mean this is deepika he is talking about, he is crazy about her, he wud never intend to say anything offensive about her and nether does he want deepika to stay at home and not have a career, he knows who deepika is, she wud never compromise on her career and he loves that about her

and ranveer has never downplayed deepika's success, why do i hav to keep repeating this? ranveer has always admitted that deepika is more successful than him, that deepika earns more than him, he has always said he is the most proud of everything she achieved and wen she didn't do a movie last year he was desperate for her to sign a film

NO. When actors are talking in public, they need to keep in mind to not spread ideas that are regressive, even unintentionally. It's not about what he thought, it's about what it comes across as.

Like I said Zara, when you highlight qualities like these, then others get downplayed. He said he loves that she is gharelu. He could've said other things as well right? It's about what you put out there in the public. That's what matters. He must feel a lot of things about her so why not say something like "I can't believe I'm married to a superstar like Deepika"? That's what I'm saying. After marriage, that is the word you come up with? I don't like that and I hope he doesn't repeat this stupid statement again.

If you don't agree with this, it's fine. I said what I felt.

Wanting life partner to be the one who does all house chores is like wanting your english teacher to be able to speak fluent Hibru. Life partner is someone u want to spend the rest of your life with,n in a lot of cases also someone u want to HV a kid with. Not someone wholl clean your mess n serve your parents n never talk back.

I'm not a fan of these actors so maybe I can give my input without bias.

I didn't find anything wrong with what he said. Perhaps others would too if they didn't project their own feelings onto his statement. 😆

You might find being called gharelu' offensive, but bottom line is if DP doesn't find it offensive it's fine. You are the one attaching a negative connotation to the word, not RS.

One more question I have to ask genuinely, what is so wrong in wanting a homemaker or home inclined spouse? 😕 What is so wrong in wanting a spouse who will take care of parents and cook for them? I honestly don't understand where misogyny comes in this. If two adults are perfectly clear about what they want from each other, and they are both happy about their arrangement; why does a third person get to decide if it is right or wrong or demeaning or empowering? 😳 The only way this would be wrong is if one party duped the other one or lied about his/her expectations.

If you find it is demeaning to nurture and care of your family, that is your decision. If you find it is demeaning to cook, clean & care for your family or in-laws, that is your decision. There is no need to attach those labels to the rest of women and decide for us how we should feel, please LET us do that ourselves.

Can you see the irony yet? You advocate for the choice of other women and yet you take the liberty to choose FOR other women how they should feel. 🥱

Please feel free to feel the way you want to, trust me I am not advocating against feelings as a whole. I'm just saying let people feel the way they want to feel.😆

Btw if you're still reading, I want to share an anecdote about my grandmother. She's the strongest & most empowered woman I've seen and she hasn't worked a day in her life. She spent her whole life taking care of her household and family, cooking for in-laws & husband. Basically all the things some consider regressive! But she bore the fruits of her effort, she raised her daughters to be independent & sons to be self-sufficient. Yes, they can cook & clean! She kept the entire family as a unit and acted as a foundation for the household. In return, she got immense love & respect from everyone. If anyone tells her she was the victim of patriarchy or her husband was misogynist, she would probably laugh in their face.😆

Good for her but there is another side of the coin too. Women not being able to fulfill their dreams not being able to work n if working having to do double duty with house chores, there is expectation from the girl to just do everything inlaws says n neglect her own parents. And that is much more prevalent in Indian society, rural or urban more than women being happy being a homemaker. Not that theyrth not there but that's not the picture in most cases. It's not free will in most cases.

And nothing anyone ever says will make me think a guy or his family saying we want a bahu who won't do a job is not tremendously sexist regressive n downright wrong. Anyone who does that in this era is not a good person imo

In our Indian society, "gharelu" word does have a negative connotation to it no matter how much one likes to spin any other way! ... Actors should be conscious about the words they use in their IVs .. so agree wholeheartedly with some of the posters against the usage of such adjectives!
