Thugs of Hindostan' review: Aamir Khan is the saving grace in a trite, uninvolving film

Vijay Krishna Acharya's period drama, starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, pits a gang of rebels against the British empire.

Billed as the year's biggest blockbuster, Thugs of Hindostan proves to be about as reliable as its most memorable character. Aamir Khan's Firangi Mallah, the only good thing about Vijay Krishna Acharya's pre-Independence drama, is a confidence trickster who double-deals his way through life with roguish charm and sweet talk. The twinkle in Firangi's kohl-laden eyes is replaced by a thoughtful gleam when the ruling British give him the task of infiltrating a group of rebels led by the venerable Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan). Why not, reasons Firangi there is money to be made, even if it means selling out his fellow Indians.

Seventy-one years after freedom, the British are still the enemy, murdering the Hindi language and conjuring up dastardly strategies to enslave Indians. Although British officer Clive (Lloyd Owen) succeeds in taking over the kingdom of Raunakpur by force, heiress Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) survives. Zafira becomes the main archer in Khudabaksh's rebel force, which gives Shaikh something to do in the absence of acting skills. Firangi worms his way into Khudabaksh's group and comes under the spell of the grizzled warrior. Firangi's loyalties are torn between the freedom fighters and the colonial masters. We have to wait 164 minutes till the predictable climax to figure out which way Firangi falls.

Thugs of Hindostan (2018).

Despite its title, the movie says nothing about the thuggee cult, apart from weakly suggesting that the bandits were proto-rebels and that Firangi is their true inheritor. Rather, Acharya's third film after Tashan (2008) and Dhoom: 3 (2013) sails under the flag of the Hollywood Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Firangi's costume is a collection of trinkets and accessories borrowed from his victims, just as his character itself is modelled on the untrustworthy pirate Jack Sparrow, played indelibly by Johnny Depp.

However, Thugs of Hindostan cannot match the level of stunts and visual effects of the Pirates films. The sequences set on the sea, where large boats that try to pass off as ships do battle, are sluggishly directed; the ones on land fare no better. The production design and costumes are impressive enough, but the action scenes are as flat and uninvolving as most of the characters despite being laid out to Ajay-Atul's insistently ponderous background score.

Amitabh Bachchan lumbers through the movie and looks exhausted from the burden of carrying so much armour and baritone-induced gravitas. Katrina Kaif, playing the dancer Suraiya, has exactly three short scenes and two songs. Fatima Sana Shaikh gets the meatier role. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is wasted as Firangi's partner in crime, Sanichar.

Only Aamir Khan seems to be paying any attention to the proceedings, and he ensures that the movie springs to life when he is around. Director Acharya, who has also written the screenplay, reserves the best lines for Firangi, and invests the most in his appealing crookedness. Aamir Khan's eye-rolling is in line with his previous comic turns in Rangeela and Andaz Apna Apna. But Firangi cannot save this Mangal Pandey-on the-sea saga from being scuttled by its ineptitude and palpable disinterest in approaching the freedom struggle with fresh eyes.

Thugs Of Hindostan Takes Bumper Opening
Thursday 08 November 2018 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan took a bumper opening as expected of around 65-70% which is the top opening of the year beating Baaghi 3 which had the best morning occupancy till date this year. Its the biggest day of the year for box office collections so this was always on the cards. The trailer recieved mixed response but at the ground level there was always going to huge interest to watch this film.

The film is the most expensive film in the history of Hindi cinema costing around 260 crore without the remuneration of Aamir Khan but despite this huge cost its not much of an issue as its the first real winner in China as far as money back to the makers is concerned. The film does not even look for China but Aamir Khan seems to bigger there than it actually looks. The film has got a $20 million (145 crore) minimum guarantee from China and then there is Overflow to share if it gets any. Films like Dangal, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Hindi Medium have done huge there especially the first two but this sort of money has not come back home. On top there is the 150 crore from satellite and digital which takes it to 300 crore with just these three revenue sources.

These insane recoveries are all good and well but that real fight is theatrical as this is where the audience comes to play and the expectations are huge for the film. The start is huge but its about the holds especially post the weekend in the case where the film goes theatrically.

The expectations will be of 300 crore nett plus and if its liked universally then it will cruise past that mark. The bare minimum necessity on a worst case is the Diwali record which is held by Golmaal Again at around 205 crore nett last year. The last real big one on Diwali was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 which went past 300 crore entt (adjusted rates) and since then nothing has gone to 300 crore nett plus.

There is not much to say about the initial as its huge all over. Its a bit slower in Gujarat and parts of South but eventually the audience come. The collections in UP and Bihar are insane especially for an Aamir Khan starrer which tend to be bit weaker in these areas. The real tests for the film begin after day one and remains to be see what are the levels. Gujarat has a prolonged holiday period over Diwali but the higher services taxes are killing that market as there has been another increase this week and this has been the case since GST came into force. The total taxes in the state are now nearly double of what it used to be at the time of Entertainment Tax.

hugs Of Hindostan Movie Review: Acharya, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Jaan Lega Kya?

After Dhoom 3, Vijay Krishna Acharya does something similar - visually brilliant but technically a sinking ship.

Thugs Of Hindostan Movie Review: Acharya, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Jaan Lega Kya?Thugs Of Hindostan Movie Review: Acharya, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Bass Kar, Jaan Lega Kya?

What's Good: It's a good looking film but as they say beauty doesn't last forever, background score that keeps you awake at times when there's a lot of nonsensical chaos happening on screen & every performance is good in parts

What's Bad: Ever known a beautiful person who's hollow from inside? Thugs Of Hindostan is one such person, there are a lot of things happening which try to intrigue you but the story is so done-to-death you just can't connect with it

Loo Break: Definitely more than once! It's like that used chewing gum whose all the sweetness is absorbed (By the films of 90s) and now it's just out there because someone has packaged it nicely

Watch or Not?: If you can watch a movie just for its visuals and don't care anything about what's happening around that artwork only then you might sit through this

Set in 1795, Thugs Of Hindostan is the story revolving around a revenge of a daughter for British had killed her father. Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) the daughter is a master-archer trained under Khudabaksh aka Azad (Amitabh Bachchan) and 11 years later, somehow they intersect their path with Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan). As Aamir himself said recently, Firangi is someone you adore but can't be friends with him.

His jade colour coat is an indication that he's a chameleon & you can't tell when he's lying. He gets hired by the Britishers' head John Clive (Lloyd Owen) to capture Azad and his army of rebellions. Firangi demands a hefty amount of money and the release of his friend Chawani Prasad (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub). From now it's all about the chameleon-like trait of Aamir and whether or not is he on the side of British.

Thugs Of Hindostan Review: Script Analysis

This movie had every ingredient of being a blockbuster apart from a good story. Baap ki maut ka badla' is so 90s but revenge thrillers could of this scale could work well if written well. There's a scene in which Aamir Khan's Firangi says, "Hume hamesha dhoke ki umeed rakhni chahiye (We should always expect to get backstabbed) and that's the hint of how they already had planned to fool us. "Dhoka dena swabhav hai Bollywood ka aur (as Indian audience) bharosa karna hamara.

After Dhoom 3, Vijay Krishna Acharya does something similar visually brilliant but technically a sinking ship. The whole Firangi being a backstabber is so overdone that after a point of time you know he's not as bad as the makers are trying to show. Cinematic liberties are taken as grandly as its budget and it just gets annoying with every scene. An Eagle is used as an metaphor for Khudabaksh's bravery and Aamir starts talking to him; it doesn't stop here, the Eagle in the end delivers a locket to Amitabh. These weren't spoilers, these were just hints why you can skip this movie.

Thugs Of Hindostan Review: Star Performance

Amitabh Bachchan seems a miscast at some places but nails some scenes. He's restlessly active for the man at his age but for the amount of action he's doing on screen, someone younger could've created a different impact. Not at all saying he was bad, he was indeed good but there were times when it was visible that he's used as a gimmick.

Ghajini, 3 Idiots, PK, Dangal and even Secret Superstar we've seen Aamir Khan in roles no one can replace him but here it's just disheartening. Firangi in one such character he can act while he sleepwalks. Partly entertaining, this isn't we expect from Aamir Khan who has outstanding body of work (excluding Dhoom 3).

Katrina Kaif, apart from couple of songs is just for an extended cameo. She adds nothing valuable to the story but is surely a treat for the eyes. Doing nothing, she just comes on screen and captures your attention. Fatima Sana Shaikh, again, has very few dialogues but she's good. She has looked like an archer and is very smooth while performing the action sequences.

Ronit Roy in his cameo is just about okay and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub fails to impress because of poor writing. Lloyd Owen as John Clive is boring and not at all gives the villainous feels.

Thugs Of Hindostan Review: Direction, Music

Vijay Krishna Acharya as a director is good, it's the story and screenplay that ruins the party. Actions sequences are very well choreographed at some places. VFX is nicely arranged but there were times when its shoddiness comes right on your face. It's a well directed film aimlessly roaming till the end.

Ajay-Atul's songs are situational and as I said in my music review, they'll be of no value minus the visuals. Suraiyya and Manzoor-E-Khuda is saved by Katrina's hotness & Vashmalle by the quirky presence of Amitabh and Aamir.

It's John Stewart Eduri's background score that has been the biggest takeaway for me from the film. It's up there with the best and supports many dull scenes.

Thugs Of Hindostan Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Thugs Of Hindostan is no Race 3 or Veer but it's an awe-inspiring disappointment. At this stage of his career, Aamir Khan should be extra cautious of not slipping towards the projects and act in the movies he's known for. Thugs Of Hindostanwill do nothing but steal your ticket money giving nothing memorable in this barter.

Two stars!

Rachit Gupta, Nov 8, 2018, 12.35 PM ISTCritic's Rating: 2.5/5

Story: After the British company's officer Clive (Lloyd Owen) takes over the kingdom of Mirza (Ronit Roy), princess Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Khudabaksh aka Azaad (Amitabh Bachchan) form a band of rebel pirates who swear to defeat the English officer and win their freedom back. The British Company in return, hire the wily thug Firangi (Aamir Khan) to track Azaad's gang and thwart his plans.

Review: Action, adventure and fantasy is a genre that you associate with Hollywood's big-ticket movies. So to watch India's answer to films like Pirates Of The Caribbean is a novel experience. While Thugs Of Hindostan has the aspirations to be a big-budget entertainer, it can't quite emulate the same thrills of a Johnny Depp swashbuckler. In all fairness, despite the lacklustre writing, the film does manage to look and feel like a top-grade adventure film. It certainly looks like a million bucks, it doesn't feel the same way.

The story begins in the late 1700s, where a conniving British officer named Clive deceives the honest king Mirza and dupes him off his family, life and kingdom. The young princess Zafira is the only one who escapes, along with the king's trusted guard Khuda Baksh, and many years later they form a gang of bandits / pirates. Their only mission is to get their kingdom free from Clive and his company rule. Thugs Of Hindostan is based during the East India Company's rule in India, when the British used their trading position to dominate India's princely states. But the fact that the heroes of this tale are pirates, doesn't quite fit into the Indian context, given that Indians never gain notoriety as pirates. The Maratha navy under leaders like Kanhoji Angre did gain bandit status during the 1700s, but Thugs Of Hindostan (TOH) doesn't look like it's based out of Maharashtra or some of the other port cities of the country. Historical inaccuracy aside, TOH is an adventure movie and you need cinematic liberty to setup a swashbuckling story. While the production design by Sumit Basu and cinematography by Manush Nandan are excellent, the predictable nature of the writing by writer / director Vijay Krishna Acharya doesn't help the movie at all. You can guess every plot development and the fact that the movie can't throw up a single good surprise or twist just spoils the fun.

The most disappointing aspect of the movie is the music by Ajay-Atul. The songs just don't have the spark you'd expect from a film featuring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Amitabh Bachchan. What also doesn't work in favour of the film is the casting. While the individual performances by Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are superb, the entire cast just never comes together. Aamir excels in the physical comedy and banter, while Mr Bachchan pulls-off the heroics and the intense dialogues very well, but the rest of the cast isn't able to rally up any serious effort. Katrina Kaif is limited to two songs and three lines of dialogue, while Fatima Sana Shaikh is left at the mercy of some badly choreographed action sequences.

Apart from the stray funny moments and consistently good visuals (thanks to decent CGI efforts), TOH doesn't really have the punch or the thrill required to pull off an an adventure ride. At 2 hours and 45 minutes, the film feels a little too long and that's problematic. The grand scale of the film does hold sway in terms of the visual experience, but at the end, this one is all show and no substance.
