A plaintive, painful plea to the Almighty to bestow rains on the famine -struck land and alleviate the suffering of the villagers from the movie Guide, often overlooked because of the other famous songs in the soundtrack, this one rendered in the raw, unstructured voice of Sd Burman himself strikes a chord deep in the heart.

Though I much prefer his "Wahan kaun hai tera" from the same movie (actually I love that song), I have to admit this song is apt for the situation and so is the voice. Javed Akhtar narrated this story about how SBD wanted a raw, untrained voice for the song "Sun mere bandhu re" from Sujata and finally after being dissatisfied with versions by all the singers of those times, decided to do it himself.

Another Allah megh de, a later and different song.

She's so graceful!
This song, singing, tune, vibe makes me feel 'floaty' lol

Yeah, I recall that interview too with Lata.

I was gonna post Dum dum diga diga next -😃

She had mentioned 'ehsaan tera hoga' from junglee and luv in tokyo's 'o meri shah e kuba' both were first recorded with rafi ..Then they decided to have same song in her voice-filmed it with saira banu and asha parekh and told lataji to sing in exactly same way..She wasn't allowed to lower scale as it was already filmed, ... She was very upset with SJ as it was difficult for her to sing on rafi's scale..

I guess on high frequency female voice would sound more shrill than male voice🤔,hence rafi would sound smoother ..In 'aji rooth kar' its not only latha voice but the violin section sounds shrill as well...lol,maybe the recording equipments then werent equipped to handle high frequencies of lathaji vocals😊..
Rain is recreated so beautifully in Dum dum and numerous other black &whites songs👍🏼 ..I especially luved the feel of mist they add like in rk and nargis's 'pyar hua ikraar hua hai' -made the atmosphere feel all windy with that tea seller stall and backdrop smoke 👍🏼 ..Visually magic👍🏼..

Preceding the rains come black clouds, so here are a few songs that celebrate these clouds...
This one is actually part of a medley - bade hain dil ke kaale follows- but I love the folksy beats of this song and of course, Shammi and Rafi.

In this one the black clouds remind of what she's lost and seem to be mocking her pain. From the movie Sharmilee, where Rakhi plays a pretty convincing double role and Shashi K is at his handsomest best.

Lata and Suresh Wadkar sing for Moushmi and Jeetu, as they ask for rains to come down with the message of love.

Sridevi- Lamhe and lots of rain.

Angel, I really must thank you for creating this thread, since it spurred me to recollect some of the songs that I've heard a while ago but that were somehow lost in the recesses of my mind.
Here's one such beautiful song, Lata and Hemant da sing to Salilda's music.

Another wonderful composition by Madan Mohan from the movie Bahana - I cannot find a video for this song at all

And here's one from one of RD Burman's earliest efforts- Chote Nawab

I confess I totally forgot about this song, came across it while reading a blog on old Hindi songs and it struck me how apt it is for this theme.

Ab ke baras bhejo bhaiya ko babul
saawan na lijo bulaay re

Ambvaa tale phir se jhule padenge rimjhim padegi puhaare
Lautengi phir tere aangan me baabul, saawan ki thandi bahaare
Chhalke nayan moraa kasake re jiyaraa, bachpan ki jab yaad aae re👏😭

What a composition by SD Burman and how well Asha Bhosle sings it!

This song is a stage performance but the atmosphere that the rains create is so well simulated and Vyjayantimala's dancing is superlative! Just check out how her neck moves as she mimics a peacock dancing in the rain! 👏👏 Wow..just wow!

This is a beautiful duet by Lata and Talat, Salil Chowdhary's music is exemplary. Notice the high notes Lata has to hit in the end of the antara.😲

I absolutely cannot watch this song, but it's good to listen to. I would like to forget Babita and Rajendra Kumar are in it though 😃. Rafi and Lata sing to LP's music and Anand Bakshi's lyrics.

@bold - lol, why LB? 😆

Watched this one before, I remember being surprised by the similarities between Babita and her daughters :p

Love the song, like I love all songs you post here..
