He didn't blame himself but he clearly is grappling with insecurity and is sensitive to any implication that he was not a good husband. It is something that bothers him subconsciously.Also, men and women reaction to cheating is very different. Society, unfortunately, for years has grilled it into women's heads that if they are less than perfect in some way the husband will be unhappy and shall stray. Almost like its expected and accepted. Women are told to stay within such marriages if it's not abusive because "think of the children" or "you are comfortable because he earns well" etc. However, if a woman cheated no such conditions would be laid on the man. And as much as the world has moved to forward such norms do still exist.
