Chapter 70
The bird finds her nest
Sitting in her apartment all be herself loneliness today spoke an altogether different language with her. This was not the first time that she was home alone. Bhavya had been going in and out on assignments time and again. She never felt as if she needed anyone. Loads of Tin Tin and Chacha Chaudhary kept her good company whatever little time was left Hermoine Granger always came along. This was the first time when she craved for something else, something more. The evening today was no less adventurous than the previous one, when he had proposed marriage to her. It took her quite some time to accept that it was indeed marriage that he had wanted and she was not imagining things. She looked at the somewhat oval moon glimmering in a gently glow outside. She wanted to smile at nothing in particular but her mind that always marveled at its capacity to be logical, chided her, there was no reason to smile. Taking a deep breath and pulling another sip of her now cold but still tasty hot chocolate, she smiled nevertheless reading his message again. She had debated between to do or not to do far too long and had finally settled against messaging him at this hour. It was nearly eleven at night.
"I can't sleep doesn't mean he would be awake too. She said to her self.
I am coming to pick you up for dinner and keep your nays for some other day.
"You and your authority Rudra how did it escape my observation surprises me?
When Rudra had recounted the four years that they had spent together in graduation everything unraveled like a movie. He was right, they had been together for so many years and she had never noticed how close and comfortable they were with each other. She was always so focused on Ryan that nothing and no one else mattered. Saumya was far more balanced and deliberate in her interactions with others than most people her age usually are, then how would she explain her spontaneity with Rudra. Her anger, her irritation, her expectations, her acceptance towards Rudra was mostly an unthought for action or reaction. Her demeanor towards him was always a result of an impulse which was very unlike her. Today also she had accepted his idea of dinner more on impulse than an afterthought. Had it been anyone else she would have never agreed.
Even when in college, there were a lot of times when she felt more comfortable with Rudra than with anyone else. He did tease her but he never judged her. They had an annual new student celebration every year when in college and it used to be one lavish fest. She contributed a lot backend but rarely came to the front. In their third year, their group had heard her sing on one of their crazy trips. While Romi had gone and given her name for a song and she was utterly upset about it. Rudra had been able to calm her down and convince her that she had until the minute before the curtain was raised to opt out. He never allowed anyone to talk about it or to discuss it again. He had only asked her once on the day if she was still apprehensive about the idea of singing on the stage. Something about the way he had dealt with this situation had made her go on stage with her guitar and sing the old number Piya piya piya bole mera jiya. She still remembered the surprise she had been to all her professors and friends who had discounted her as a socially awkward nervous wreck.
"Thank you for coming. Rudra said, he looked rather glum and Saumya too felt his sadness.
"Rudra I came because there are too many questions between us and very few answers.
"I believe it is a difference of perspective Saumya, rather than questions and answers.
"Call it whatever Rudra but I am still unable to wrap my head around your abrupt proposal. I cannot believe that it was a joke, but I still cannot answer the question why me?
"Why you? You would need to spend all your life with me to understand, why you, but still, for starters, I think from my mind. I cannot live in a make belief world, I live in the real, concrete, world around me, I don't understand art or artistic ways of life. Chocolate for me is dessert and rose a flower how does it express what one feels? I have never been able to understand. In my time with you in college, I had understood that you too loved to walk on the ground with your head as level as it could get. There is no one else like you.
"Wow, that sounds so unreal, and not true! Am I supposed to believe it?
"Yes, let me explain, for me anything that keeps me going in the desired direction is all I need. If I need to eat, a decent clean cafeteria is as good as a seven-star but when people around me look at me they see an Oberoi, the larger than life image, the greater the number of stars the more status worthy the dinner is. For me, it will always be about appetite but for others around, it would be far more than that. Luxury, money, power, status all foreshadow me. There is a certain way I am expected to behave. People are constantly speculating about me, am I like my father or like my brother? The Oberoi is so huge that the minuscule Rudra is lost. To you, I was always Rudra even when you learned about me nothing changed. That means a lot to me.
"You are no more the Rudra I knew in college that equation changed the day I met you in Ktech as my superior.
"Yet you fought with me like you used to when we were studying.
"It was just a habit.
"No Sumo you were always spontaneous with me. I can clearly differentiate between the person you are with others and with me. Anyone can, it is that obvious. You don't fumble for words with me, you don't have to think before you speak out your mind to me. You don't pretend everything is alright in front of me.
Rudra did catch her offhanded here, he was right, with Rudra she let down her guard easily. She knew he was sure to mock her no matter she liked or disliked it so she cared less about it. She did get irritated but that was mostly superficial. To be honest these few days he has been very courteous to her and she did not like it one bit. She liked bickering with him, shouting at him, calling him names. He never took offense to her calling him sappy. He was true even now they were sitting in a small eatery on the outskirts of the city and she did not mind it nor did she expect anything else from him. She did overlook his elephantine surname Oberoi.
"So that is why I want to marry you. Why are you so reluctant?
"I never actually thought that this was real. I thought it was one of your pranks initially. I still can't come to believe it.
"That a man like me wants to marry a woman like you. He laughed with a wink. It was always easy to discern when he was just having fun at her cost or was serious, at least for her.
"No, but a man like you had the audacity to propose to a woman like me is unbelievable!
"How about we find who was better not suited to other the remaining of our lives together?
"This is so unreal Rudra. I don't know
"What can I do to make you believe it?
"Nothing, actually when you told your family that you would convince me to stay back, then itself I understood it was not a prank.
"Thank God something worked I at least did not lose all my expertise to prank you.
"I have still not said yes so I might as well take my own sweet time to discern if all this is a bluff. For now, I really don't like to be working with Ktech, it is hard to believe that someone as Tia could be so conniving.
"That is how the life is. It mostly hits us where we suspect the least.
"Tell me about it. I should get going. I got a warning from Bhavya the other day to keep my distance from you.
"I wouldn't have expected any different from her. He said putting some tip on the plate before leaving.
"You have changed Rudra you were never this forgiving.
"No I am not forgiving, I have just learned to understand people better. The kind of person Bhavya is she would surely not want to be associated with us. It is not all white here Saumya, nor will it ever be. Bhavya knows a lot about us so this was expected.
"Rudra no matter what I cannot go against her, I suspect your mom and dad won't approve of me either.
"They will come around, though I don't think they have any problem. Bhavya will be another story I agree but I did not ask you to go against her. I just asked you your wish rest everything we can work on.
"For now I just want to get out of Ktech. She said securing her seatbelt in place ducking the question again. Rudra drove in absolute silence till he was just a few minutes away from Saumya's house and then asked her again.
"Rudra I don't have an answer, there are a lot of things to consider.
"Consider? Like what? He said bringing the car to a shrieking halt at red light, impatience obvious in his disposition.
"Rudra give me some time...
She was cut short
"3 minutes Saumya. Answer yes or no but I need a resolution now.
"Rudy it is not a joke.
"Yes or no? His eyes were fixed on the signal it had turned green and he stayed still, counting the remaining 120 seconds.
"You have 120 seconds.
"Rudra every one is honking you will cause an unnecessary Jam. She tried to reason, but it looked like Rudra had given up on reason today. The traffic had come to a standstill and Saumya was panicking.
"yes or no?. He said trying to reign in his racing heart.
"Let's go, Rudy.
"60 seconds Saumya. He never looked at her once for the fear if she said no it would be over. He would never pursue her, he would rather accept it as his destiny. The traffic log was increasing and a few rustic looking men got out of their cars to knock at their windows. He still did not flinch.
"Now or never?
"Rudy give me some...
"30 seconds he was unrelenting and Saumya for the first time felt like she was about to lose someone dear once again. The pain of the loss of her parents resurfaced, teary-eyed she looked around and uttered a feeble yes, the signal was red again. Rudra was too ecstatic to care about the signals. Nothing could stop him, he cruised his car escaping a crash by the thinnest margin. When he brought the car to a halt after a couple of minutes in front of her apartment building, she was too stunned to say anything. In complete silence, she got out of the car and he followed her. What he had done was not only reckless and dangerous but also forceful and intimidating.
Once in the safe confines of her home Saumya collapsed on the couch and cried her heart out. Rudra waited for her shock to subside and anger and frustration to resurface. Once she was composed, he pulled her to himself. She looked into his eyes and he on reflex stepped back to duck her punch and to hold her captive in his arms.
"You could have got us killed. She said squirming and stomped on his foot. Rudra's grip loosened, freeing herself she launched an aggressive attack on him hitting wherever she could, well mostly her punches landed on his chest.
"How could you? Repeating this with every punch she kept hitting till she could no more.
"How could you Rudra? You forced me!
"I did not.
"What if I had said no?
"That would be alright I would have left you alone.
"You would! You did not give me that impression.
"Ok You want to retract I give you one last chance but I want your answer now. Your no would make me sad but won't crumble my world. I would still be as sane as ever
"You are insane already. She said sniffing in the sleeve of her shirt still too numb to make anything out of her situation.
"I am waiting.Giving him an accusatory glance she looked away from him.
"I am not one of those who would assume silence as a yes. You will have to spell out your answer.
"I don't have the courage to entertain one more traffic signal aberration from you so Y-E-... Even before she could finish with her spelling she was pulled in to a soul scathing kiss. There was nothing soft and gentle about it, he took much more than she was ready to give but he was not at all repentant. If breathing had not been imperative to survival Rudra would not have let her go that easily. It was years of yearning that had come to the fore. When she tried to move out of his tight hold, he held her even closer. She felt the heat emanating from his finger scorch her skin even though she was wearing a cardigan. His grip on her waist branded her soul.
"Rudra you should leave now. It was clear she feared this going in a direction her middle-class upbringing forbade.
"Saumya I will but you need to understand one thing. She said gently pushing her back into the couch and kneeling down on the floor beside her.
"You are as good as an Oberoi now. Your allegiance lies with us, not with Tia. You need to stay back at Ktech and continue as before.
"Rudra you are as much of an Oberoi as is Shivay, wicked, calculative and smart. She said feeling cornered.
"Saumya If Tia had a problem with something that was a result of actions of our elders she should not have taken us hostage. Two she should have had the courage to call us out on our face, this deceit is ugly and defeats her purpose. You are a person of reason and I know what I say makes sense. Tia is no miss helpless chit on the street. She is Tia Kapoor with all the right connections, education and backing, what she is doing is treachery against your family. The word your family seeped deep into her heart. She did not give him an answer but her silence said it all. Giving her a chaste peck on her forehead he got up to leave.
The message beep on her phone brought her back to the present.
Stop thinking about me and sleep.
Mr presumptuous. She texted back.
Then were you thinking about our kiss?
She had already slept a sound blissful sleep. The idea of having a family to call her own cozied her enough to let go of the TinTins, Chacha Chaudhary, and Hermoine.
...
Chapter 71
Illusions Shattered
Shivay was too lost in his own world, he could not stand Tia for a second at this moment. He had chosen to come back to his office instead of landing at the rooftop heliport at home. It was just eleven PM and the drama back at home would still not have subsided. He called Om to check if Tia had left, to his utter disappointment the Kapoors had left Tia at Oberoi mansion. He was relieved to learn that Gauri would not be going for the test the next day. They would be taking another date for her. After dallying around on his laptop for another half an hour he finally left for home.
It was just one of those days when nothing went according to his plan. His car gave up just a few yards away from home. The driver pleaded for him to wait till another car was arranged but his house was not even ten yards away so he chose to walk back. He rarely stood in front of his own house, and today when he did waiting for the enormous iron gates to open up, he felt intimidated by the enormous size of his own home. There was hardly anyone who did not feel that way except of course Anika. It was difficult for him now to get her out of his system. She had found a permanent home in his thoughts. It would have been so easy with any other women but he had to go and find another challenge for himself. He cursed his heart for betraying him so while he entered through the main gate to the great walkway and lawns in front. When walking those 100 feet of the strip he caught some unusual sound. Looked at his watch it was nearly 12:30 at this hour who could be strolling around that secluded part of the garden, where the lotus pond thrived. He sneakily approached that area trying and succeeding in being discreet. In that dimly lit area what he saw left him aghast, Dushyant and Tia were busy eating from each other's plate without giving a damn about anyone. This woman was absolutely fearless. This did not bode well for the Oberois.
"Serves me well for suspecting someone like Anika. He thought to himself. Walking back as noiselessly as he could, taking the back stairs he went straight to his room. He needed some time to absorb what he had seen. While his senses had warned him against Tia's motives of late but this was beyond all imaginations. She was here to ruin them all. Either she was outright stupid or she had something hideous up her sleeves that she had the nerve to conduct her not so clandestine rendezvous in plain sight. Anyone could have happened upon them. The very thought of what he was going to bring upon his whole family caused him severe heartache. Someone opened his room he opened his eyes and saw his mother enter with Pooja thali. She spread the incense all around his room like always. It was dark and she did not notice his flat form on the bed. She was about to leave but halted for a second and then turned around.
"Tu kab aaya?
"When did you come?"
She uttered startled and shaken by his sudden appearance. Her heart beat loudly in her ears.
"Der ho gayi?
"Am I late?"
He came to stand in front of her, his hand on his head waiting for her to put the tikka that she did every day just that today he was full of remorse. Pinky understood something was wrong.
"Sab kha chuke?
"Did everyone eat?"
He asked eating his favorite gulabjamun that she gave her as prasad.
"Gauri, Om? Pinky was surprised by his question and shook her head in negative. She wanted to ask about his well being but she knew getting a sensible answer was not possible so she turned to leave but was stopped by a tug at her dupatta. She turned back and saw Shivay holding onto it, reminding her of her 7-year-old son who never left her side. He even sat in the kitchen with his books when she cooked. That is how he had acquired his special interest in cooking. Pinky felt her heartbreaking to a million pieces by that look on his face. Remorse, apology, agony, and repentance all combined into one. He did not to say anything more, she understood every unsaid word he uttered and he fell in her embrace broken and defeated.
"Shivay tu theek hai? Kya hua hai bol na?
"Are you alright? What is wrong Shivay please tell?"
She urged him to speak but he was busy trying to hold on his myriad of emotions.
"Ma kya kuch aisa hai jo, main aaj iss samay kar sakta hoon jissey mere man ko yeh lage ki tumne mujhey maf kiya.
"Mom is there something that I could do right now, that will make me feel that you have forgiven me."
He was a man of actions and he needed to do something to beg her forgiveness.
"Shivay main naraz nahi hoon.
"I am not ANgry Shivay."
"Please mom He all but cried.
"Tia ko is ghar se jaane ko keh. Maine bahut kuch kiya aur saha hai iss ghar ko banaye rakhne ke liye usey nahi seh pa rahi hoon. Ek minute aur nahi.
"Ask Tia to leave this house Sivay. I have endured a lot to keep this house together but I am unable to tolerate her. Not a minute more."
She said, the kind of repulsion that she felt for her was no match for what Shivay was feeling. Taking a deep breath he contained his anger within.
"Sab so gaye kya mom?
"Has every one slept, mom?"
Pinky shook her head.
"Aap chaliye m ain aata hoon.
"You go I will come"
Pinky left without a word or expectation, she knew not every thing could be done on her whim a lot was at stake. She felt vindicated today of all the accusations. Shivay could never express himself but his actions always did. She did not need words either she was his mother who had loved him regardless. While descending the grand stairs of the Oberoi mansion she looked up towards his room with profound affection like every day, though today it was not laced in dejection. Gauri was standing there talking to Rudra and seeing the pics he had clicked on his phone.
"Gauri yeh mandir mein rakh de or issmein ghee aur daal dena. Aaj yeh Deepak bina bujhey jalega.
"Gauri put this back in he temple and add more ghee. Let this deepak burn the entire night today."
Her tone was light but shaky when she said handing her the Pooja thali.Gauri took it away.
"Choti ma aap disturbeds lag rahi hain?
"Choti ma you look disturbed?"
Rudra asked concerned, Janhavi who was passing by heard Rudra and stopped.
"Kya hua?
"What happened?"
She asked to both of them, she too felt a change not only in Pinky but it was as if the air around had changed.
"Nothings jethani ji Pinky said a bright and a genuine smile graced her face making it appear even softer than she was.
"Shivay ka phone aaya kitni der mein aa raha hai?
"Did Shivay Call? How long will he take to come?"
That was Shakti.
"Shivay laut aya Shakti ji
"Shivay is back Shaktiji"
Shakti understood it literally whereas she meant metaphorically.
"Kab? Pata nahi chala?
"When? I never knew"
Tej asked coming in from the corridor.
"Mujhey bhi nahi pata chala.
"I also did not know"
She again said with an unmissable clink in her voice. Gauri was the first one to see him come down the stairs. She felt the air crackle with mystery and his grey eyes felt unusually deep. Gauri looked around scared for some support, she knew he was upset unsure if she could be the reason. Om was still in the study, she swallowed hard taking two steps back to take cover behind the pillar to become invisible to him, but he caught that motion and gave her a slight smile trying to reassure her or to tell her that the wall between them was broken. His mirage was broken, there was no hard and fast rule of any kind of who could stoop or who could rise to any level. Human nature was too fluid to conform to molds and casts, never mind if the cast was created by Shivay Singh Oberoi.
"Arrey Billu tu kab aaya?
"When did you come, Billu?"
"Thodi der hui Dadi par aa gaya.
"I am a little late Dadi but I am here."
He said bending to touch her feet. Dadi just noded and before she could say anything, an unbearable sound broke the spell that was casted on all Oberois.
"Shivay Baby when did you come?
"Where were you, Tia? He asked walking up to her.
"I was outside in the lawn but I did not see you coming. You landed at the office port didn't you? She asked something about his demeanor was unsettling.
"Hmm, We did not get the clearance to come until here. The army choppers were patrolling. It looks like the security has been upped.
"I want to talk to you Shivay it is urgent. Tej too could sense something was going on in Shivay's mind. Especially since Anika had called and told him about what had happened. The sooner Tej told him everything the better it would be.
"Ten minutes bade papa. Have you broken your fast Tia? His question was spoken more like a last warning. It was as if he was saying spit out the truth and save your self this disgrace. He looked at her trying to convey his disappointment, but she did not understand a thing. Had it been Anika she somehow understood him without him having to speak. Probably this is what is called a natural connection or probably an honest person has a purer heart which makes it easier to understand others.
"No baby I was waiting for you. Om told me that you were coming back today. She said gaining back her flair sooner than she lost.
"Shivay, I was waiting for you. Choti ma dinner please?Om said to Pinky the entire situation around was somewhat unnerving and he attempted dissipating the untold stress.
"Gauri Tia ki Pooja ki thali le ana. Inka vrat todna hai.
"Gauri get Tia's Pooja Thali, She needs to break her fast."
He said addressing a retreating Gauri, who stumbled because he had called her out by her name. It was Shakti who helped her balance herself.
She turned around and looked at him with her huge eyes confused if she had heard it right. Even Om and Rudra were a little shocked.
"Agar tum yahan khadi rehne wali ho to main jaon?
"If you are going to stand here the should I go and get it?"
He again said looking at her and she immediately rushed to the temple.
"I will get it Shivay Baby, Tia said looking pleased.
When Shivay cast a glance at Tej , he tried to implore Shivay to refrain from whatever was going on in his mind, but Shivay was long gone.
"No Gauri will bring it. Seeing Gauri approaching Janhavi asked if they should go to the poolside to which Shivay disagreed saying that the moon was now towards the lotus pond. Tia looked uncomfortable at the idea but Shivay gripped her arm and walked her to the pool with some amount of force. Tia was too confused by Shivay's disposition. It was hard to tell what he was thinking.
"Humara pehla karva chauth hai aap nahi aayeingi mom? Aap sab aaiye please.
"This is our first karwachauth won't you come, mom? All of you should come please."
He pleaded after all his family was his strength. They all followed. Janhavi took the lead to explain to her how to do Pooja. Tia looked that the moon through the heavily ornate channi which had the diya on it, she kept her eyes closed when it was time to look at Shivay.Had she kept her eyes open she would have seen it coming.
Shivay blew that diya off, the loud gasp from Janhavi made Tia look at him. Tia never knew fear but in this moment she felt the air around her was sucked and she struggled for her next breath.
"Yeh Dia kaise buh gaya?
"How did this Diya blow off."
Janhavi spoke out loud.
"Don't worry badi ma. It's ok.He picked up the glass that was kept on the plate held by Gauri and brought it close to Tia's mouth but then pulled it back.
"There is a stain on your cheek. She had probably smeared some roli on her face. She tried to rub it off.
"Some blemishes are for lifetime Tia you cannot remove them, he said taking the channi from her hand and giving it to Gauri back. Tia was now sure that this was going to get ugly. She braced herself for what was to come. Shivay breathed to once again get hold of his rage.
"My upbringing will be defiled if I do what I want to now. Please leave Tia and if you have even an iota of grey matter in your nasty head, rid yourself of whatever stupid ideas you have. I will strip you of your every bit of dignity, and your belongings which I am sparing now. Don't look back Tia you will pay heavily. He said every word soaked in warning.
"Shivay I will not forget this evening.
"You should not Tia, because I will also not forget this betrayal. What happened to your dad was unfortunate, don't rot yourself and your achievements in this hell of revenge.
"Shivay who will rot or who will not that is for us to see. Be warned this is not over. This just began. She said her smile crooked and her eyes held an ugly promise. Rudra pulled a stunned Gauri out of her way or she would have trampled all over her. Everyone else was left flabbergasted. Shivay had shattered whatever little illusion of their relationship was left.
Tej looked concerned because this all happened too much too soon. They did not know what else was cooking up in that errant mind of hers. Om rang for her car and asked Khanna to wake her driver up who was deep in his sleep in their outhouse.
They all came to the dinning table looking rattled and concerned.
"What is going to happen now.
"Don't worry Janhavi we will handle whatever comes our way, Tej replied he had collected himself and was back to being the Tej Singh Oberoi.
"Bade papa I saw Tia and Dushyant having their own little festive ritual at that pond. Whatever Tia has in her mind is nasty but I am ready to face it.
"You are not alone Shivay. Shakti said and for once Shivay felt his whole family stand up to their own tall standards. He was convinced henceforth the road might be bumpy but it will be a hell of a ride.

Thank you 😛, but I think what Rudra did was more of an impulse though intelligent.
Shivaay is impulsive... instead playing well knowing tha was a deceiving s**t wud hv been a game of a player...but directly letting her know that he saw everything n he knows what she is planning was a bit kiddish wasn't it...To me it was more of a tired and defeated Shivay. Even Tej never brought his indiscretions home. Tia doing all that in his backyard right under their nose was an open challenge to him. He is angry beyond reason. He probably does not want to play the game anymore, it is no more entertaining.Having said that yes the response was unexpected and kiddish.Sam baby ur header...it shud b chapters 70-71 not 70-72will rectify it now. Thank you for letting me know😊
