That is what I meant, it is not an offbeat movie. Art house was the word used in post so I went with it.

Fan is a commercial entertainer through and through, it just didn't work at the BO. Copious amount of over the top melodrama, cheesy dialogue, mindless action tropes, senseless plot lines, the convenient characters can do what ever the f**k the writers think off (screw structure and continuity)- it has it all.

Fan did not have any heroine, no songs, no dances and it had a dark, tragic ending... and you are calling it a commercial film?

It was a dark thriller, not a commercial film, not an art film but in between, more of an experimental film

Movies like Deewaar, Mukhaddar ka Sikhandar, Shakthi, SRK's own Baazigar, Darr etc, have it all -tragic endings, dark storylines, no heroines and what not, but they can be called anything but off-beat plus they have been accepted by the audience so well that they literally made the careers of the main character...Why the special treatment to 'Fan' ?

WHATT 😲 Deewar, MKS, Shakti, Baazigar, darr ALL OF THEM had heroines and songs 😆

What are u even talking abt? 😆

They had tragic endings but also had the commercial ingredients needed for movies they all had HIT songs, heroines.

Fan is no commercial movie as far as BW is concerned. No singing and dancing, no lead heroine, no love story, a morally compromised "hero", no patriotism, no sentimentality and melodrama like family love and tears, etc.

Baazigar and Darr was were also different for their time though they had popular elements like chartbuster music and dances that were a rage and love stories like most BW movies.

Certain things just don't work in BW. When it does, it's just a fluke, not a pattern. These kind of films are always risky.
