Maajhi Mulgi Saarkhe

Teeka and a form of god bharai happened the evening before the wedding traditions that would have typically occurred at a formal engagement ceremony.
she was draped in a beautiful Banarsi saree in deep crimson with a dark pink and crimson double hued blouse

Everything happened in a blur for her at the Hall

She was the center of attention, women walked by smearing teeka, a couple even hooked what looked like gold chains with pendants on her, Neel sat by her wearing a cream color embroidered silk kurta and chudidaar
His hair was combed back neatly, the parting a perfect line
He looked nervous but smiled comfortably

Mr and Mrs Misra sat in the first row with a forlorn look smiling occasionally when family or friends greeted them

Mrs Misra hugged a big leather purse between the folds of her pally and frequently pushed her glasses back on her nose and looked at Suvi piercingly

Mr Misra occasionally squeezed her handkerchief holding fist, her expression softened a bit and she looked at him with misty eyes, pretended to cough and rubbed the tears off her cheeks

They did it in a quiet non intrusive way

Ruchi stopped by and checked on them frequently

She dragged Nihar with her one time and made him hug his maternal grandparents

He was shy but spoke politely.

Ruchi handed Mrs Misra her youngest occasionally

Pushkar walked by them and didnt pause or greet or nod

Mr Misra looked on shocked

Amma walked over "Aap hamare yaha ruk jaate raat ko?" she insisted

Mr Misra shook his head his wife had told him she didnt want to stay where the bride was already being hosted... at Pants

"Choodiyon ka joda laayin hain" Mr Misra spoke hesitantly

Mrs Misra clutched and unclutched the voluminous purse

"Abhi deein aapko?" she asked politely

"Aapne bahu ka teeka kiya?" Amma asked

Mrs Misra shook her head and nodded all at the same time, unable to lie

Amma bend down and held Mrs Misra's hands in a warm grip

"Aapko mera waada hai... aap aur hum wahin hain rishte mein... hamesha aap aur hum samdhi rahenge" she said softly

Amma wore a pale peach banarsi saree and dark pink bindi and a jooda and flowers around it

"Gajra laate hain aapke liye" Amma said

"Nahi... baal bahut jhar gaye hai hamare, gajra sambhalta nahi" Mrs Misra said with a faint smile.

Mr Misra looked on, at the stage with a faraway look in his eyes, looking but not really paying attention, as a string of people got on and got off.

Aadhya was out of control unable to comprehend what good fortune had occurred for her and her mother to be surrounded by so much pomp and gaeity

"To haath mein rakhen, khushboo aati rahegi... Matunga mein ek Ganpati ka mandir hai South ka... waha bahar dher saare baithte hain, unko kaha"

"Aapke bahu ke yahan se kaun aaya hai?" Mrs Misra asked

"Unki jeeji rehti hain Singapore, third trimester hai unka" Amma said lowering her gaze

"Ladki sandar hai" Mrs Misra acknowledged with an aching heart

Amma's eyes sparkled

"Andar se bhi" Amma said softly

Mrs Misra looked at Amma startled wondering how Mrs Pandit could be so open and so accepting and so receptive to change...

Amma slowly sat by Mrs Misra...

"Aasan nahi tha hamare liye... humne Nupur ko beti maana hai" Amma cleared her throat and swallowed

Mr Misra turned as if his daughter herself had appeared in person
In the loud cacaphony of the banquet hall he had somehow heard his daughter's name being mentioned

"Nupur?" he repeated as if to confirm

"Beti maani hain... bata rahi hain" Mrs Misra's turn to squeeze her husband's wrinkly clenched fist

His shoulders slumped as he leaned back on the red vinyl tent house chair... with a sigh

Letting go of a person long gone...beautifully emotive !!! I literally feel Mrs. Mishra's pain, Mr. Mishra's dilemma of emotions and Amma's acceptance of the inevitable in the face of her son's happiness !
Great writing as always and this one tugs our heartstrings as parents 👏

Thanks Vani
Exactly!!

How can Nupur parents move on so easily?

If Amma had lost Neel she would be in an altogether different place.

Misra's attending the wedding is big leap for them.
It's not easy sitting and seeing someone sitting place of your daughter.
For Neel too its big deal to go in for wedding with all the fanfare. I am sure he can all the questions in the eyes of people around.
Hats of to Amma. She is the one I guess who is making is easier for Suvi.
Last but not the least Ruchi. I hope Ruchi to finds happiness soon.

Some of your strongest characters in both SOSY and ID have been the older people and perhaps it is the wisdom of their years that reflect in their words and action...

Ranjan, Amma, athai, the Mishras, Mama & Mamijee, Amma ..all these people tower over the others in their sagacity and wisdom !!!

And yet Iam curious about what make the antagonists tick besides plain greed , avarice and malice !!!

Thank you Nisha.
Really nice update.
Finally the wedding day has come.
I am more concerned now. There real test will start after marriage.
It will be task to handle Nihar. He will take sometime to accept Suvi.
On the other hand Aadhya will be over the moon. Although even she would require little adjustment. She will no longer be getting the undivided attention of her mom.

It takes a lot of courage and a big warm heart to attend the re-wedding of your own son in law, to see the husband of your late daughter moving on in life, to accept this fact that the person in question has a life ahead and he has a right to a new partner for the sake of himself and also for the sake of your grand children . I applaud such selfless parents n in laws. Words fall short wen appreciating ur talent Nisha!

Nisha, seems you have seen Mumbai more than me.
I come to know about Matunga Ganpati temple only few months back.
That too just because it's on the way to Matunga Nullies.

Sanrakshana Kavacha

"Aap keh detin" Mr Misra urged his wife softly as Amma departed

"Ki humse baalon mein gajra nahi lagaya jaata?" Mrs Misra removed her glasses wiped them off and and slid them back on her bridge
Her eyes were moist

Mrs Misra had quit wearing jasmine in her hair after Nupur was gone, she couldnt bear to... anymore

Amma reappeared and handed a plump ripe string of jasmine, the flowers opening up slowly, like babies froma nap.

"Jab aapka mann ho hamey keh dein hum aapko stage par le chalte hain?" Amma offered, as she waved down a waiter, and asked the guy to hand them appetizers and juice

"Aap apne mehmaanon ko dekhen hamari chinta na karen" Mr Misra said warmly.

Amma walked away with unresolved feelings... a little half heartedly
She realized she had "betrayed" Mrs Misra in a way

But she had chosen her child what could be wrong about that

She exhaled audibly

Ruchi sprinted up to her"Amma... koi baat ho gayi? Aap itni udaas kyon hain?"

Amma smiled with gratitude

"Arey nahi..." she shook her head

"Ammmaa" Ruchi warned

"Hamey yeh baat samajh nahi aa rahi, ki hum Misraji ko aur Nupur ki Ma ko kya kahen" Amma stopped walking her eyes filled with tears

"They are so gracious and dignified. Bhai is marrying again within two years. Yet they are here Amma" Ruchi used the opportunity to express her angst

"I hurriedly agreed when he rushed into this wedding" Amma spoke in a whisper

Ruchi held Amma's hand

"Its his life, but by accepting his decision
you are shielding him from all the hate and ridicule he would have otherwise gotten, Amma" Ruchi said choking up

"Umm... uh... umm... Neel ki chinta nahi karenge to kiski karenge" Amma asked authoritatively

"There is no easy way out Amma" Ruchi said sadly

"Suvi ko ghar par laana Nupur ko nikaalna nahi hai" Amma consoled herself

Ruchi didnt say "Amma Nupur JAA chukin hain"

She let Amma have her pretend contentment

Pushkar came by with a tantrumy older son

"Aapko zara apne bachon par dhyaan dena chahiye" he said sternly

Amma extended her arms "Hamey pakdaayen" she said cheerfully, a lil nervous

"Aap apne bete ki shaadi karwayen" he said bitterly...

Ruchi looked stunned

Amma grabbed her son quickly and consoled the boy

Mamiji invited Amma to do a ritual

After it was done, Suvi headed to the rest room escorted by Aabha's cousin

Aabha was unable to mingle or chat or engage in a comfortable conversation with Suvi

She struggled to make eye contact, she was polite and respectful but not warm...

Suvi looked at herself in the bathroom mirror's reflection

She didnt even know the girl that stared at her

Decked in a garland and many gold chains and red and green glass bangles all over her forearm

the saree was most beautiful... BHAVYA... sundar...

Suvi exhaled... releasing the nervous energy audibly

It seemed like a dream...

It must be she concluded since she recognized no one

Neel had been flirty and and pleasant on the ride to the banquet hall

Trying to feel her bare waist... and holding on to her hand... and placing it on his heart etc...

She turned red thinking of him, as her heart danced in joy

"Bhabhi help karen aapki?" the girl hollered

Suvi opened the door with a jolt

A group of women not realizing she was using the bathroom were cackling

"Kisi ne sapne mein nahi socha Neel yon bachpana karenge"

"Arey aap yeh soch rahin hain, hum to yeh soch rahe hain, ki Nupur chalee jaayenge kisne socha tha?"

"Aapne dekha jeeji, woh kuch bolti nahin?" one young lady whispered

"Arey HINDI bhi nahi aati... pata nahi KIDHAR miley Neel bhaisaab unko"

They turned when they heard the rustle of her banarsi saree and tinkle of her bangles

"Dheere... woh to to yahin thi" a woman nudged looking embarrassed

"Bhabhi aap dance kar leti hain?" her escort asked her eagerly

"Nai" she said quietly, raising the shield around herself... following the young girl
