Iambest: The criteria is not only how technically changing the song is. As I explained before, there could be various reasons for the decisions. As there can only be one winner for films in all languages, there are unfortunately going to be many good songs that lose out.

That's subjective. I think those songs are very good, especially when it comes to lyrics. When it comes to the arts, it's not possible for a jury to not be subjective.

I don't know much about BW songs like you, I am more into Rafi saab only. But I know South music quite well especially SPB, Yesudas and Chitra and I think and I am not sure looking at the movies some of these songs belong to it has to do with subject matter as well.

For instance Shankarabharanam deals with western classical vs Indian classical music and how western pop and changing tastes can decimate Indian classical music even if the singer is very good.

Saagara Sangamam deals with what is dance ? Should it be for the sake or art or for awards and commerce. The woman who dances in this is incidentally SPB's sister SP Sailaja.

I don't know Yesudas list or have not looked it up but one of them is for a Malayalam movie which deals with a Hindu man adopting a muslim and raising as a muslim not Hindu.

I do not know Chitra list or have looked her up. I only remember this song for which she won.

The whole movie is about should classical musicians who sing mostly in Telugu sing in Tamil too. And how folk music is as important or has rhythm or raaga as classical music.

Like in this scene the actress (who is Manirathnam's wife) interrupts a classical musician and asks why he does not sing a song in Tamil to make people understand. He mocks her and she sings the song which was playback by Chitra and able to bring carnatic music raaga into a folk song.

They have also each won several awards and in some case several national awards for acting, direction as well. These are iconic movies. I don't know if all are, I have to look but these are.
