Thanks for all your comments. You will find the update below, but let me warn you beforehand that it is boring, and I really didn't like how it turned out. Will definitely do a better job next time. 😃.

I am sorry for your loss, he said, sounding genuinely upset. She murmured a soft thank you.

We need to head back now, he continued, your sisters will be waiting. She nodded and tried to get up, but she felt her legs give way. Just as she was about to fall back down, two strong arms held her. She looked at him and mumbled thanks. He just nodded and helped her steady herself. She looked ahead; she did not feel she had the strength to walk. As if he understood what she felt, the kind stranger gently held her and started walking towards her home. She felt safe leaning against him and allowed herself to be lead back home.

CHAPTER 3

Bani stared at the darkness through her window. It had been four months since the funeral, since she had lost her mother. During the day, she kept herself busy with work and tending to her sisters, but at night she felt alone. She missed her mother terribly. Although she was close to her sisters, her mother had always been her true confidant, her friend, her rock. She would tell her everything she felt, without having to think or analyze it first. She wiped away the tear falling down her cheek and found herself remembering Jigyasa and Masi. They had taken care of everything during the funeral, allowing Bani to tend to what was most important to her, her sisters. She could never forget their kindness. They had stayed back the next day, to help out and then left to Mumbai. Masi and Jigyasa had asked her, Rano and Pia to come to Mumbai and stay with them, but Bani had politely refused, saying that they had already established a life here, and she didn't want to uproot her sisters from the only place they knew as home. She remained adamant even after much coaxing from their part, and finally agreed to come visit them soon and frequently, which made Masi and Jigyasa feel a little better.

Since then, she had been speaking with both of them every week and loved talking to them. Bani had invested so much time and effort in helping her mother and looking after her sisters, after their father passed away, that she never really had time to make any close friends. Jigyasa made her feel at ease and she loved they way she would interact with Pia and Rano as well. Pia took an instant liking to Jigyasa because she was fashionable and knew all about everybody who was anybody in Mumbai. Pia always dreamt of the big life and imagined herself one day to be attending such parties that Jigyasa frequented. She longed to go to Mumbai, but knew that Bani's heart was in Mt Abu, so she happily put her dreams on hold. Rano, although studious and slightly reserved, was quick witted, took a liking to Jigyasa and masi as well and never failed to make them laugh.
Masi was gentle and Bani loved hearing her voice. When she spoke to her, she missed her mother slightly less, and she felt comforted.

She had spoken to them a week ago, and found herself missing them. She was surprised at her feelings for them, as she had never really gotten attached to anybody so easily and quickly before. Suddenly the shrill ring of the phone could be heard. She ran towards the phone to pick it up.

Hello, she said slightly breathlessly. There was silence on the other end. She took a deep breath, and repeated clearly, but softly, Hello

Hello, a voice was heard on the other end.

She felt a whoosh, as if the air had been sucked out of her, as she heard his voice again. The same tender voice she had last heard 4 months ago. She never realized that his voice would have such an impact on her and she instantly remembered his eyes, his face, his smooth voice and the gentle feel of his hands. She found herself blushing. As her cheeks burned, she stood rooted to the spot and felt unable to say anything back.

Hello, it's me Jai Walia, he repeated when he did not hear a response from her.

Jerked out of her daze, she replied shyly, Hello.

Silence followed again. Bani found herself fiddling with the cable of the phone, not knowing what to say or what to expect next. He had never called before, why now?

Suddenly, he replied as if reading her thoughts, Masi asked me to call. She had been trying your phone for a while now and it seems it wasn't going through.

Feeling a slight tinge of dissapointment, but not really knowing or understanding why, she replied softly, we had some bad rains the past two days; the phone lines haven't been working well.

Oh, he replied.

Silence again. Bani started feeling awkward as the silence stretched, and she mumbled, was there something else Mr Walia?

No, I mean yes, masi wanted to talk to you and he gave the phone to masi.

Hello Bani Beta, masi's voice boomed. How are you?

I am dong fine masi, I was just thinking about you and Jigyasa di today.

We were missing you too, and so we tried calling. We will be coming to visit you tomorrow, if you are not too busy.

That's wonderful news, Bani said excitedly. Masi you know you all are welcome here anytime, Bani said. Rano and Pia will be so happy when I tell them.

Masi laughed. Beta Jigyasa wants to talk for a moment. We will see you tomorrow ok.

Yes masi. After Jigyasa and Bani spoke for a while, Bani went to her sisters room to tell them about Jigyasa and masi coming the next day. As she lay on her bed, she felt happy after a long time. As she was falling asleep, she found herself secretly hoping that Jai would be there as well.
