Part 18
Just as Dev looked up to instruct the driver to turn the car around, the car rolled to a stop and the driver said, "Aa gayein sir." Dev whipped his head to the left and sure enough, there stood Elena's house. The main door was slightly ajar because the Police were still around for last minute queries. Dev didn't know what to do.
On one hand he wanted to jump out of the car and run to Sonakshi and never let her go. But on the other hand, he didn't want to see Sonakshi with Ritwik. When he didn't move, the driver said, "Sir yahi hai who ghar jahan aap jana chahtey the." Dev looked back at driver who looked at him expectantly. He nodded slowly and stepped out of the car. For the next five minutes he just stood there looking at the door.
"Kya karoon?" He thought to himself.
Finally deciding that he would just check on Sonakshi and leave, he took a few steps forward. "Par agar main ussey chhorkeye nahin ja paya toh?" He wondered. Resolving his dilemma he said, "Nahin. Main Sonakshi ko ekbaar dekhey bina nahin jaa sakta. Who theek hogi toh main bhi theek rahunga" and with that he went to the door and pushed it opened and slowly stepped in. The first person he saw was Ritwik who was talking to Prakash about something. The moment Ritwik spotted Dev his eyes became as wide as saucers, "Mr. Dixit? Aap yahan?" Before replying to Ritwik dev looked around but Sonakshi was nowhere to be found.
"Haan. Batata hoon." Dev said nodding. But he first went to Prakash and clarified every single detail about the incident and Kushal's current situation. After bidding adieu to Prakash, Dev sat down beside Ritwik on the Sofa. "Sonakshi theek hai naah Ritwik?" Dev asked in despair. "Haan Mr. Dixit. Woh theek hai. Kuch nahin hua ussey. I came at the right time." Dev smiled a sad smile, which reminded Ritwik of Sonakshi's sad smile. "Thank you Ritwik, ussey bachaney ke liye. I will always be grateful to you for that" Dev said sincerely. Ritwik looked at Dev closely, "Par Mr. Dixit, aap yahan kar kya rahey hai? Aapki toh shaadi hai naah aaj?" He asked confused.
"Shaadi thi. Ab nahin hai" Dev replied. Ritwik eyes widened once again. "Ab kyun nahin hai?" Ritwik asked even though he knew exactly why the marriage had been called of. Dev's face said it all. Ritwik smiled internally but nothing showed on his face. "Kyunki jissey main pyar nahin karta, main uskeye saath kaise rehta?" Dev said standing up from the couch and walking to the window. "Par ab kya fayda" he said softly. But Ritwik heard and this made him confused, "Matlab? Aap toh yahan Sonakshi ke liye aye hai naah? Toh who yahin toh hai" Dev turned to face Ritwik. "Pata hai." He paused. He looked at the direction of the room, Ritwik said Sonakshi was in, earlier when they were talking to Prakash. He started at it longingly. She was safe with Ritwik. He was sure now.
"Ab main chalta hoon. Uska khayal rakhna Ritwik" Dev said to Ritwik, who was still utterly confused. "haan who toh main rakhunga" Dev was satisfied. Dev continued, "Mujhey pata hai you'll take care of her. After all, you love her as much as I do." Dev said, almost as if he was talking to himself. The moment Ritwik heard this he stopped Dev, "Ek minute, aapneye "love" se kya mean kiya?" Dev looked at Ritwik and said, "Jo log aksar mean karteye hai when they say a boy loves a girl." And this just made Ritwik burst into laughter. "hahahaha- Apko lagta hai...hahahahaha...main Sonakshi si se waise wala pyar karta hoon?" He asked wiping his eyes. Now it was Dev's turn to look confused. "Arey Dev babu, when I said Sonakshi is my childhood friend, I meant just that. Friend. Woh meri best friend hai. Bilkul meri behen jaisi. In fact kai baar Sonakshi neye mujhey rakhi bhi pehenayi hai." Ritwik said winking at Dev.
Dev's jaw almost hit the floor. "Par phir who photo?" Dev wondered aloud. Ritwik paused, "kaunsi photo?" Dev whipped out his phone and showed Ritwik the photo, explaining when and why it had been taken. Ritwik smiled even wider. "Arey yeh toh tab thi jab Sonakshi aapko miss karkey ro rahi thi and I was comforting her. " He put a hand on Dev's shoulder. "Chinta mar karo aap. Aapki jagah koi nahin le sakta. Sona neye who jagah bus aapko hi di hai. Ab jaiye jaakey dekhiye ki jagah abhi hai bhi ya, kisi aur ko de diya usneye" Ritwik said, laughing at Dev again. Dev cracked a relieved smile. He couldn't believe it. And here he was planning to go back without coming in. How stupid would he have been.
Without wasting anymore of his time he made his way to Sonakshi's room. Sonakshi stood at the window of her room and looked at the stars. Hearing a knock she said, "Door khula hai Ritwik" because she knew her Mashi Mesho were tired and asleep by now. "Ritwik bahar dining room mein hai." The moment she heard his voice she turned around with a small jump. "Dev?!" She almost yelled. "Shhh. Sonakshi! Tumharey Maashi mesho so rahey hai naah? Dheerey bolo!" He said with a lopsided grin, while Sonakshi just stared.
"Aapki shaadi?" Sonakshi queried still standing near the window like a statue. "Saari taiyaariyan ho gayi hai. Mandap me baithneye se pehley socha aapseye Mil loon Dr. Bose." Dev replied cooly taking a step towards her. Sonakshi didn't know how to reply to that. "Kya hua Dr. Bose? Plan achha nahin laga?" He said stopping right before her. Seeing him in front of her, took all of Sonakshi's rational thoughts away.
Caressing her cheeks lightly Dev said softly, "Uss bas***d neye tumheye kuch kiya to nahin?" Sonakshi nodded her head in negative, having lost her ability to speak. "Kitna bada gadha tha main" Dev continued. "Jab main tumseye alag reh hi nahin sakta, pata nahin kyun maine koshish ki." Seeing the dried tears he said, "Bohot rulaya na maine tumheye? Ab aur nahin. Sonakshi having somewhat regained her senses said, "par Natasha?" Dev smiled. "Natasha se shaadi meri majboori thi Sonakshi. Who main tumheye protect karney ke liye kar raha tha. Kyun kissey, you don't need to know now, kyunki all has been taken care of. Ab kisisey darr nahin. I will protect you." Dev said slowly pushing a strand of her hair back as it fell on her face.
He hated seeing those dried tears on her cheek so he bent his head slightly and kissed her on her left cheek first and then on her right and Sonakshi just stood their reveling in the feelings it erupted in her. Spotting a small scratch on her neck, and he winced internally thinking how it must have hurt sonakshi even if it wasn't big. That was undoubtedly Kushal's fault he left a soft kiss on top of it too. Sonakshi sucked in a deep breathe and almost grew limp in his arms.
Satisfied by her reaction Dev stood back up straight and took a step back. "Toh aaj uss raat waali baat ko khatam karein?" He asked smiling at her. Giving her no chance to say anything he said, "Uss raat main yeh kehna chahtha tha ki...I" and Sonakshi could hear her own heartbeat once again.
"I love you Sonakshi. I have since that first day you bumped into me uss medicine shop ke bahar. And tab seye ab tak, har roz who pyaar badhta gaya. And now I am in a state jahan tumharey bina main koi bhi scenario soch hi nahin sakta."
"Itna ki jab tumheye chot lagti hai, I feel the pain. Tum meri jaan ban gayi ho Sonakshi. And I never want to part with my life." He finished. Taking Sonakshi's hand in his, he put it on his heart and Sonakshi was surprised to find it thudding as loud as hers was. "See what you've done to me Dr. Bose?" He asked smiling at her.
"Kya aap apni puri life is pagal, erratic, coffee pe haq jataney waaley ke saath bitana chahengi?" He asked looking at her earnestly.
Sonakshi's heart just about stopped beating. She had never imagined her dream to come true. And now that it had she had no words. He was here. He loved her. And he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Could anything be better than this? So mustering up all the strength she had left in her, she said, "Haan Dev" and that was all he needed to hear.
Within moments his lips were on hers and her hands were in his hair. They kissed each other as if their life depended on it. Dev smiled into the kiss and bit on Sonakshi's lower lip which made her gasp and open her mouth granting him the perfect opportunity to deepen the kiss. Only when they felt the scarcity of air did they break apart. Dev touched his forehead with her's and said, "I love you."
And in that moment nothing could go wrong for Sonakshi. She had him with her and they would be together forever. That was the bliss she always wanted. So she smiled up at him and said, "I love you too Dev." Before pulling him in for another kiss.
