Look back...Look back at me!
Lakshman stared at the retreating figure of the girl in yellow and orange lehenga...her big doe like eyes were beseeching him moments earlier...he stood transfixed and wondered whatever transpired between them today seemed to be already etched in stone. She..seemed different... she had looked up at his face with hopeful eyes... her eyes were going to be the death of him...mused Lakshman. Today under the rays of setting sun, even his usual taunts thrown at her had seemed lame to his own ears...Suddenly he remembered the reason for her being there. Food. She had brought food for both the brothers. God! The food must have gone cold! Lakshman cursed himself. He shook his head as if to clear it from whatever was going on inside of it and went in search of his brother. Lakshman found his elder brother Ram chopping some wood for fire, we went there and called him, "Bhaiya, the food is here..let's go and eat and we have been invited at the Rajbhavan to have dinner tonight." Ram stopped and looked up, "Who told you about the invitation, I mean...I didn't see anyone". Lakshman paused , scratched his head and replied, "It was Princess Urmila, she came by with the food and invited us to the dinner. She said Maharaj Kushadhwaj will come to fetch us...let's go bhaiya I am famished." Ram slowly nodded his head and went inside the hut to have supper.
"The food is delicious bhaiya...I'm so glad that princess Sita is my bhabhi now, I'll get to eat such delicious food made by her all my life. A big thanks to lord Shiva for making this match possible Bhaiya." Ram who was sitting quietly beside his incredibly excited brother smiled and nodded his head, "It is true that the food is excellent and it is a fact that Sita is a wonderful cook but today's meal my brother was not made by her." Lakshman furrowed his brows and guffawed, "What are you saying of course this is made by bhabhi...I know..th.." Lakshman suddenly stopped mid tirade and stared at his brother for a moment, Ram's look confirmed the nagging feeling that he was having the moment he learned that Sita wasn't the cook. Lakshman suddenly averted his gaze and murmured, "Why would SHE lie to ME?"
Prince Ram was quite a perceptive person and when it came to his dearest brother Lakshman, he never missed a thing. It certainly did not escape his notice that his brother seemed quite out of sorts and edgy all afternoon since their supper but he chose not to comment on it either. Right after two hours from sunset, Maharaj Kushadhwaj with a few of his soldiers came by the ashram of Sage Yajnavalkya to escort the two princes to the Rajbhavan for dinner. As they entered the premises of the Rajbhavan, as if just on cue, the queens Rani Suniana and Chandrabhaga came out along with Rajrishi Janak to accompany the princes to the bhavan. After a while of chit chat, the men gathered in the dining hall where the women of the household served them with food prepared by them in the royal kitchen of Mithila. "Dinner has been prepared by Sita didi...keeping in mind your likes and dislikes jijashree..." gushed Shrutakirti as her eldest cousin Sita was serving food to her future husband and her brother in law. Prince Ram smiled affectionately at his youngest sister in law and nodded his head slightly. He suddenly turned to his right to find his younger brother staring intently at princess Urmila who was busy serving food to her father and uncle. "Lakshman.." cautioned Ram in a low voice only for him to hear. Lakshman shook his head and continued eating but the frown on his forehead was still visible. "The supper was made my Urmila didi, did you like it jijashree?" further asked Shrutakirti, who seemed earnestly, interested to know what her future brother in law thought about the culinary skills of her cousins! Ram once again glanced at his brother who was busy nibbling his food before answering back, "We enjoyed the supper very much. The food was delicious and anyone could tell that it was prepared with a lot of love and affection. My brother and I consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have made your acquaintance princess. We can't thank you enough." Sita who was smiling at her kid sister for asking so many questions, answered, "We are family Raghunandan, and it is our duty to take care of each other." Suddenly Rajrishi Janak laughed and added, "But seriously I'm not saying this because I'm biased as a father and to a father, each of his daughter is special in their own ways but I've never known that our Urmi was ever interested in cooking!! I always thought she was more eager to learn scriptures, paint and sometimes even practice sword wielding ...BUT COOKING!!" Ram from the corner of his eyes saw a visibly pale Urmila trying scurry away when her mother stopped her to be present there and to which the princess obliged grudgingly. She could hardly meet the eyes of the chote Raghunandan, who was still frowning at his plate of food. "What happened to you Lakshman bhaiya you seem lost, aren't you hungry or is the food not appealing enough?" Lakshman was brought back from his reverie, "No...No bhabhi...I'm just full but the food is excellent." The rest of the evening went rather uneventful except the occasional tension filled silence between the younger Ranghunandan and the younger Janaknandini.
Urmila had never found herself tongue tied in front of people, but who knew that she would feel uneasy at her own home all because of the lie she spoke...it had seemed harmless at the moment, but now she felt wretched. What must he think of me? It saddens me to no end to think that Prince Lakshman thinks badly of me! Since when did he think highly of you that now suddenly his opinion is going to change? There was a nagging voice in her head that went on distracting her. She stood there wondering all this with a silver bowl filled with stuffed betel leaves. "Urmi, could you please take the soiled towels and dump them in the kitchen?" Asked princess Mandavi. "Urmi are you...okay?" nudged a visibly worried Mandavi since she was met with silence from her younger cousin's side, who was lost in some faraway land... "Ugh...yes...Nothing... sure...why wouldn't I be?" A seemingly bristled Urmila asked. "I don't know...may be because you seem very troubled..." Mandavi treaded cautiously. "I am fine." was all she got from her cousin as she snatched the soiled towels from Mandavi's hands and virtually ran from there.
"You really didn't think that you could get away by lying did you?" Urmila stopped in her tracks as the male voice rang through the empty corridor of the royal palace of Mithila. The night was exceedingly chilly with northern winds blowing all over. She really didn't think that he would catch her simple lie and call her out on it. She turned to face Lakshman but her eyes were downcast. Lakshman took a step towards her and asked, "You didn't answer me princess, what made you LIE?" Urmila felt hot tears stinging her eyes, as she felt foolish at her own behaviour. Seriously, what did she lie for? Was his opinion that important to her?
"I...I don't know what you mean...please let me go...I have work to do." Urmila tried in vain to leave but to no avail.
"It really seems that you have very short term memory because not five hours ago you told me that our supper was prepared by bhabhi when it was you who had made it!" Lakshman looked at her intently, honestly trying to decipher the mystery behind the person Urmila!
With a trembling chin Urmila answered, "Tru...truthfully I..I didn't think it would matter. I..I really thought it would be more agreeable..."
"WHAT? You THOUGHT I wouldn't accept the food because YOU made it? Do you really think that little of me?" Lakshman asked incredulously.
"No..no..I don't think you are capable of that...I have a better opinion of you than you have of me at the moment I believe." Croaked Urmila...
Lakshman took a deep breath and exhaled loudly wondering since when did their banter went downwards. Why on Earth would Urmila think that he thinks badly of her? Was he so unkind toward her that she somehow developed the idea? How could he tell her that his ideas are quite the opposite and whatever taunts he threw at her were all in good humour because he loved to get a rise out of her!
"Mila.." Urmila jerked her head up and her face turned scarlet at the usage of his endearment. Lakshman continued as if nothing had happened. "Mila...I think we both got off on wrong foot with each other, believe me when I say that all that I have said to you, they were just to get a rise out of you because...because I think you look really beautiful when you are angry and I am not jesting with you either." Lakshman looked rather surprised at his own confession as if he was in a daze. Urmila suddenly felt her body go all warm with the lovely sensation. Is this how didi feltwhenever jijashree spoke to her in private...?! She shivered at the unknown intensity and probably the element of stealth in this quiet meeting made her heart beat faster.
"I thought ...I know it's silly but you always seemed to think that you wouldn't want to eat the food prepared by me...I..I really thought you didn't think much of me!" Urmila finally concluded. Lakshman couldn't believe his own ears! The woman he was so besotted with...thought he hated her!! Way to go brother!!
"Then it's my fault that I made you think that way! And here I used to think that I am pretty transparent since I am quite sure by now even Bhaiya knows about my true feelings for you princess!" "Which I assure you is nothing quite like what you imagined them to be." Urmila felt her heart might burst with happiness but it was neither the time nor the place to have such conversation.
"Did you really enjoy the supper?" Asked Urmila quietly. Lakshman took a step towards her and answered, "I wish I could tell you here how much I loved it...but propriety stops me from it. I wish you had prepared anything... at least one food item at dinner time too...I would've enjoyed it knowing it was made by you Mila...even the betel leaf at the end of the feast could have sufficed."
Her eyes glinted with mischief as she slowly took out a stuffed betel leaf, thrust it inside Lakshman's mouth, and ran away leaving a stunned Lakshman at the corridor. Her voice resonated in the hallways... "As they say be careful of what you wish for Dasharathanandan Lakshman"
P.S- The title has been taken from BBC's presentation of Mrs. Gaskell's North and South..Any dialogue that seems similar to any shows that you watch is purely coincidental.😉 😆
