People are behaving as if everyone gave the film a bad review, which is quite clearly not the case. Many have liked the film, so I don't understand why people on here are suddenly deciding to not watch the film purely because of a few reviews.

I wonder if Katrina Kaif is good at poker.

In Baar Baar Dekho, Kaif wears an all-encompassing blankness, looking like a striking but not altogether realistic waxwork. She's a vision, albeit one whose accent-soaked Hindi " more unbearable than ever " gets in the way of possible appreciation, and I wager she'd be an unnerving opponent on a card table, one both stealthy and distracting.

Cast in a film, however, her blessings are less obvious. Particularly with a co-star not known for any acting talent either, in a film where a feeble script is built on constant, relentless revelations with artlessly expository dialogues. Characters consistently point out the obvious, labelling things for the audience: one points to a Hanuman statue and calls it Hanuman, while a woman at a Thailand resort points out a Welcome To Thailand sign when a guest " who may well be asking which floor he's on " asks where he is. Siddharth Malhotra, who plays protagonist Jai Verma, stands around at a lavish pre-wedding party and tells his bride-to-be that he could have spent all this money on vedic mathematics research instead.

Right. That is a creative decision in the same league as Chitrangada Singh teaching Economics at Oxford in the execrable Desi Boyz. Worse, perhaps, since Jai is a real piece of work.

The most imbecilic hero I remember in awhile, Jai is a math professor perpetually wondering what is going on. A slackjawed dullard, he walks around in a duh state, asking silly questions trying to keep up with his surroundings. Granted, director Nitya Mehra frequently (and inexplicably) pulls the rug out from under his feet, with a half-baked plot which is two parts A Christmas Caroland one part Groundhog Day, but there is no excuse for a hero this dismal and lunkheaded in any romantic film.

We have to believe that this guy is a math-obsessed academic, and that his lady Diya (Kaif) is turned on by hearing numbers multiplied quickly, the way Jamie Lee Curtis melted for the Italian tongue in A Fish Called Wanda. Nothing in this movie adds up, but the gist is that Jai " annoyingly tentative and indecisive about marriage, in-laws and the woman in his life " keeps getting jolted ahead into the future where things change and he remains the same stupid self, struggling to catch up. It is all rather excruciating, despite the glossy settings and the casually futuristic detailing, largely because Mehra labours her point endlessly and her tubelight hero never seems to learn a thing.

This is a hero who, minutes after he first leaps forward in time, decides to let his hair down and chill over a party song. This is a hero who, recognising the potential for an affair that could wreck a marriage or two, goes ahead and tries it out first. This is a hero who learns of a once-prosperous friend's life going awry but doesn't bother to help him with a warning. This is a hero who, after assuming a day in court signals the wedding of his son, is stunned to see his wife there. This is a hero who makes use of a second-chance by being needlessly rude to various people who may perhaps cross a line in the future, but are blameless at the time he's throwing them shade. This is a hero who calls his pregnant wife fat and then proceeds to make the car drive to hospital all about himself, later preferring to accost a pandit in a corridor rather than be there to hold his hand.

And then... he calls himself a genius.

Geniuses are in entirely short supply when it comes to this production, with a boisterous Ram Kapoor proving the least objectionable element. Comedian Rohan Joshi is around " carrying a briefcase into a hospital only because he wants people to think he's a banker " and, without the slightest chance to try out his comic chops, looks incredulous at the film he's in. Perhaps he's distracted by the music, by songs like Kho Gaye Hum Kahan which sound shamelessly like Karen O's The Moon Song played through an Amit Trivedi filter. Characters go through a lot in this film " the Groundhog Day section of the script is the most tedious and the most contrived " but none more than the audience.

Diya, portrayed by Katrina as high-strung and shrill, is " by my reckoning " the most patient and understanding wife in the world. Married to an utter idiot, her outbursts are entirely justified, and come what may, she does put up with him and consents to loving him. Poor thing. And yet, even at the end of this unbearable film when things are finally, belatedly being set right, the fool husband complains about her impossible temper. As if it's her fault. Poor show, Ms Mehra. If you could go back in time to set this film right, make something else instead.

Someone here said Raja Sen hates Katrina because he loves Deepika. My question is, does he DESPISE, ABHOR SID MALHOTRA with a passion?

He seems to be the only one who thinks sid and katrina are worse than the lowest of the low creatures on earth in the film?😆

First, his review, (this is a review? ) was so woefully convoluted, complicated, twisted it took me several shakes of the head to follow every sentence. Obviously, no one told RajaSen, you don't hv to be complicated to sound intelligent.😆

Bold. Really sen babu? Is that why singh is king, namastey india, partner, welcome, Dhoom iii were blockbusters? Her blessings were less obvious so her songs didn't get watched over n over again and she wasn't number one for any amount of years.😆 Sleeping, you are mr reviewer. The public will believe what you say, yes?

Aaah..say what? 😲😕 What was the last sentence about?

This is a reviewer who rambles on and has lost the poor reader in his effort to find fault with a film.

Anyone notice in this war and peace novel length review, Raja hasn't really SAID ANYTHING about the film, except how HE HATES SID AND KATRINA and finds fault with a Thai lady pointing to a welcome to Thailand sign...(which is quite plausible for someone who doesn't speak English)...maybe sen babu only travels to Jhumritalaiyya

My review of his Raja Sens review...

An exercise in spewing HATE AND VENOM..against two people who he probably hates because he realizes he can never be as good looking as they in Saat janams.

NDTV REVIEW😃 (4*/5*)

Baar Baar Dekho Movie Review: Katrina Kaif, Sidharth Malhotra Give it Heart

SPOILERS AHEAD

What if we get the chance to rectify all the big mistakes of our life? And what if a magical wand takes us into the future to personally witness all those critical twists and turns on the road journey of life where we may swerve into the wrong lane? And then, what if we get a chance torevise our actions and deeds accordingly?

Debutant director Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho is unlike any romantic yarn - I hesitate from giving it that loosely-used term the 'rom-com'. It is the ultimate what-if saga, narrated with a tender care and subdued splendour that makes every moment between the lead pair precious and gladdening.

Watching the film, we are just happy to see Jai and Diya together. It could be because they are played by two of the best-looking stars in our cinema. Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif look so made-for-each-other that it seems absurd to even suggest that they can be separated by destiny or design - or in this case by designed destiny.

But human nature is such - and this is the sach (truth) that this unusually conceptualized film dwells on with mollifying magnificence -- that it sinks the very ship that keeps hope afloat. With believable nearsightedness -- don't we all mess up in life? - Jai tells Diya on the day of their wedding that he would rather not marry her and instead pursue his dreams of going to Cambridge.

The hurt, humiliation, bewilderment and disappointment that Katrina Kaif shows on screen in her sequence of painful rejection dashing hopes of shared lifetime, is a joy to behold. This is the first occasion in her career when Katrina Kaif has actually sunk her ego into her character. You can see her feeling the hurt and the happiness with equal sincerity. Bravo!

Sidharth Malhotra, so far seen giving performances where his matinee-idol looks obfuscate his other purported virtues, comes into his own with a character who is clueless about the stunning time travel that fate/destiny/karma/kundli puts him through.

It's a morality fable bolstered by bouts of effervescence, nostalgia regret and pain. It takes us a while to fall into a rhythm and pattern, as Sidharth Malhotra's character of the Maths teachers hurls from one age-span into another in pursuit of the unforgivable lapses that could ruin anyone's life.

Just imagine: you fail to show up for your wife's painting exhibition and she falls in love with her arts dealer. Or you may not cuddle your little daughter when she asks you to do so, and this may cause indelible damage to your domesticity.

Exceptionally, Baar Baar Dekho trusts silences to the talking. There are long passages without background music to over-punctuate the drama of disintegration that the couple plays out. The emotions the couple exchange seem relevant and real, as the dialogues (by Anvita Dutt) rip off pages from contemporary marriages all over the world without creating a cut-and-paste haste in the conversations.

There is plenty of the rare quality of gravitas tucked away in the mischievous love tale, none more mischievous than the pundit (played with able astuteness by Rajit Kapur) who is supposed to solemnise Jai and Diya's wedding. Jai thinks the pundit is responsible for his rushed futuristic time travel. But is he? Is this ability to stare your mistakes in their eyes a quirk of fate? Or is it something else?

Baar Baar Dekho doesn't seek or give us substantiated answers on cosmic mysteries. Why Man does what he does, who is responsible for our actions -- sometimes horribly wrong - we don't know. Neither does the film. Director Nitya Mehra glides with a silent giggle and a sigh across a beautifully painted skyline of wistful thinking.

There is plenty to celebrate in Baar Baar Dekho, not the least of its virtues being the ability to deliver marital home truths without sermons or soliloquies. As the film's main premise suggests, the success of a relationship is in the smaller details. Likewise, this film. It strings together scenes from a situation of marital calamity with an easygoing swagger that Ingmar Bergman would have found distracting.

The actors have given their heart and soul to the main parts. And some of the supporting cast - not all, I am afraid - is also exceptional.

But the real hero of the film is Ravi K Chandran's camerawork. The magician that he is, Chandran imbues every frame with warmth charm and beauty. Sequences recreating Cambridge University (where a Ramanujan-like professor mentors Jai) reminded me of that very fine Ramanujan biopic The Man Who Knew Infinity.

The futuristic styling is apt without getting outlandish. Come to think of it - there is nothing over-the-top in this quietly accomplished film except the Kala Chashma song and dance. Why on earth was it used to promote the film? That zingy cheesy aura of that song is so not the film.

Baar Baar Dekho is about getting a chance of changing the mistakes in life without making them. But really, I can't think of one thing I'd like to see changed in this film. Except maybe Sarika's prosthetics when she plays dead. Someone overdid the mother's wrinkles.

Fenil Seta review
3/5

We all have wished at some point in our lives to have a glimpse in our future so that we can know what decisions to take in our present for a better tomorrow. But this is a wish that obviously cannot be fulfilled. Baar Baar Dekhotells a tale of a man who gets such an opportunity and whether or not he makes good use of it forms the crux of the film. The concept is novel but also bit confusing and niche. But the message is beautiful and something that people will definitely relate to!

The story of the movie: Jai Verma (Sidharth Malhotra) and Diya Kapoor (Katrina Kaif) are childhood friends-turned-lovers. Jai is a Mathematics professor and very ambitious while Diya is an acclaimed painter. When they decide to get married, Diya is over the moon while Jai is a bit apprehensive. He wants to excel in his career and feels that marriage can act as a roadblock. After a major fight, Jai goes to sleep and is shocked as he wakes up 10 days later at his honeymoon in Thailand. More surprises await him as he sleeps the next day and wakes up few more years later. In each period, he gets a glimpse of the future and gets quite shocked by how life is going to unfold.

Baar Baar Dekho begins beautifully with the montage of Jai-Diya's growing up years and the song Kho Gaye Hum Kahan' playing in the background makes a tremendous impact. The film is 140 minutes long but is quite breezy and light-hearted. The funny moments are very few but the film isn't serious or depressing in any way. The Jai-Diya confrontation in the beginning is nicely executed and it's great to see how Jai reacts when he wakes up 10 days later! The film gets better as he jumps few years later and again when he wakes up many, many years hence. The intermission point though predictable makes an impact. In the second half, the film does drag at places. Also, the novel concept of time travel is the best and also the not-so-great part of the film. It's great because it makes for a unique watch and it's not as great as it's not well kept in front of the viewers. It is a bit confusing and also convenient at places. Also, it's not mainstream and hence, the film won't reach out to a wider audience. Thankfully, the film picks up towards the pre-climax and climax, when the essence of the film is unveiled. This entire bit is damn good and the Kala Chashma song during the end credits makes the whole thing very interesting.

Baar Baar Dekho boasts of nice performances but is not the best or most memorable acts of the actors. Sidharth Malhotra is quite nice and puts a sincere effort. His reactions and mannerisms are very important since he's supposed to act shocked when he wakes up in the future and tries to get hang of things. And he does it well.Katrina Kaif looks super-hot and performance wise, she is quite nice and much better than her performance in her last 2 films - Phantom and Fitoor. She handles the delicate moments quite well. The chemistry between the two is superb and that's one of the plus points. Ram Kapoor (Diya's father) contributes to the fun in the movie.Sarika (Jai's mother) lends able support. Sayani Gupta (Chitra) looks ravishing as always and does a fine job.Rohan Joshi (Raj) is good but could have been better. Taaha Shah Badusha (Jai's brother) is quite okay and is wasted. Rajit Kapur (Pandit) plays an important part and is excellent. Others are nice.

Music is soulful and compliments the goings on well. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan is the best followed by Kala Chashma, Teri Khair Mangdi, Nachde De Saare and Sau Aasmaan. Background score is exciting. Poornamrita Singh and Arjun Bhasin's costumes are stylish and appealing, especially those worn by Katrina. Ravi K Chandran's cinematography is beautiful. VFX is nicely done and looks quite real. Sri Rao's story is interesting with a few rough edges. Anvita Dutt's dialogues are great at some places and average at others. Sri Rao, Nitya Mehra and Anuvab Pal's screenplay is engaging but could have been better. Same goes for Nitya Mehra's direction. She has handled some moments exceptionally but there are places which needed more polishing. For instance, there are places where Jai's confusion of waking up in future doesn't look justified. How does he know what to make for breakfast? How does he reach the college in Cambridge and how does he go to other places - how did he know the way? Also, one doesn't really at places relate well to the problems he faces. All in all, a good effort by Nitya and she can excel big time especially if she gets a foolproof script in future!

Some of the best scenes:
1. All songs
2. Diya talks about marriage to Jai
3. Jai meets Diya's father
4. Diya's father gives Jai the chawal' (hilarious)
5. Jai fights with Diya
6. The honeymoon
7. The hospital sequence
8. The intermission point
9. Jai wakes up as an old man
10. The last 20 minutes

On the whole, Baar Baar Dekho rests on an interesting premise and has a great message in the end. The performances are fine more or less and Sidharth Malhotra-Katrina Kaif's chemistry is crackling. However, the time travel bit though novel is not well explained and executed. Some portions are unconvincing and even dragging. It's surely an ek-baar-dekho type of film if not a baar-baar-dekho types!

My rating - *** out of 5!
