5. For me, the most outrageous scene in this episode was not that Khushi was shamed and vilified on every television screen in the nation. It was that Arnav slapped that obnoxious man at the photo-shoot---and then paid handsomely for the privilege. I suppose the writers wanted to give an early clue that Arnav is hypersensitive to any mention of his mother---but it gave a shade to his character that unsettled me. I can also understand that the writers wanted to show that Arnav believes everyone has a price. But the slapping suggests a man who lacks self-control. I thought that Arnav Singh Raizada had his passions firmly under control.

I so agree with this. I've always felt that the slap was unnecessary. Arnav's actions were always calculated. Like how he changed his decision to leak the fashion show clip after meeting with Khushi in dargah.

My dear Jalebi Jane, you have surpassed yourself with the fabulous reference to David and Goliath, one of my favourite stories too, growing up. And now that you mention it, those early stories were all about such elements of excellence. The camera angles, the posturing of the characters, the music, the art direction, all unparalleled. I loved Arnav and Khushi in this one. As you said, he is now suitably challenged. This is probably the moment he starts taking her seriously, because for ASR winning is everything and deals are what makes the world go around. The last scene certainly was very defining of the shape of things to come. The audience is as much in readiness to see the battles between these two opposing Titans begin. Cos although Khushi does not have a formidable force behind her like Mr Raizada does, she has her spunk, chutzpah, never say die attitude and her best friend Devi Maiya. And the world has been conquered with less in the past, hasn't it? Why David was the perfect example!

Yes, I like how you put that:
"This is probably the moment he starts taking her seriously, because for ASR winning is everything and deals are what makes the world go around."

In a way, Khushi has won already. She has got Arnav thinking about her. That is prime real estate---space in Arnav's mind :-)

Episode 02 - I don't know how many IPK fans feel the same but I hated the dori scene. No, the acting was bang on but I simply couldn't digest that the hero would do something like this. It was after this scene that I decided to not watch the show. I watched it very irregularly after this scene, more like once or twice a month. It was only around Dec-Jan that I started watching it and it was quite later that I watched all the previous episodes.

Aqua,
I confess I enjoy such edgy scenes, and I like a dark, cruel hero---it doesn't offend me because I am always aware that I am watching (or for that matter, writing) a fantasy. I fantasize about things which I would never want to have happen in my real life.

However, after reading the above I can see how some viewers would be disturbed. And I am also aware that there are some very young viewers who may not be able to differentiate between fantasy and reality. If they are guided by such scenes, then it may create some confusion about boundaries. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I feel this episode tells us that mere looks are not enough to grab and hold Arnav's attention.
He is in a field where beauty is all around him and is probably readily available to him. But that is not enough for him to declare undying love or offer lifelong commitment.
Sure he was taken in by Khushi's beauty in fashion show, but after that he does not even remember her. She piqued his interest and started taking over his senses starting this episode. She did challenge him a couple of times before, still he dismissed her. But this time it seemed like he wanted to put her down hard so that she would not dare to challenge him again, only to realize later that he grossly underestimated this mere chit from lucknow.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 017

Art of War

At the end of Episode 16, I suggested that Arnav wants to engage in warfare with Khushi. And if she runs away, he will be disappointed.

1. The first two minutes of Episode 17, which ends with the iconic line, "Welcome to Hell" are brilliant. This is a dialogue in which only one person speaks. Khushi does not say a word for two minutes. Yet it's not a monologue; it is a dialogue. Arnav makes statements, interprets her silences (accurately) and then responds. His statements are clearly designed to provoke her into signing the contact.

2. Why is Khushi in the conference room? She isn't there to rebuke him for the window incident. She doesn't even mention it. She is there to demand justice. "You can't fire me. I'm not going anywhere because I have not done anything wrong." The reality and legality is that he can toss her out and she would have no recourse. (As Payal points out, the naukri is Arnav's to bestow as he sees fit.)" But Arnav does not throw her out, instead he proposes a challenge. Because---he wants to play with her.

3. Even Lavanya appears insecure about Arnav "giving such an unimportant person all this importance." And she is right. As an aside: when Khushi leaves after having signed the contract, the camera cuts to Lavanya and she looks smug. I feel that the better directorial decision would have been to have her appear confused. Even threatened.

4. "Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across." Sun Tzu says, "if you are certain of victory, offer your enemy a way out. A battle avoided is better than a battle won." So Arnav makes it appear that he is benevolent and offers her a golden bridge. But he offers it in such a way that Khushi has no choice but to refuse it. He says, "you can leave. There will be no repercussions and all your mistakes will be forgiven." If Khushi accepts the way out, then she is in essence admitting she was wrong.

5. I love the scene of Arnav on the recliner reflecting on Khushi. The two flashbacks the editor selected are telling. They relate to pride and honour. Something Arnav understands. Khushi preferred to fall out of the window rather than beg him for help. And the second one is Khushi stating that she is not wrong, and so she will not leave. Arnav was once an underdog who had to presumably scrape his way up. He may be determined to crush her but I believe he does admire her chutzpah.

4. Maybe I'm observing our Arnavji too closely---but his jaw tightens when his assistant informs him that the public shaming from the film footage release has forced Khushi to leave Lucknow. He feels something. A bit of guilt?

I completely agree. He wasn't happy to know the havoc his action had caused in her life. He stopped his assistant from telling anything more about her condition. He didn't want to deal with the consequences and the emotions she made him feel.

Mr Sobti is brilliant in that scene. An equal measure of disbelief and suspicion.

True. Before this scene we have witnessed only Ms. Irani as Khushi being surprised with her round mouth and wide eyes but here for the first time we saw ASR with expressions of disbelief and Mr. Sobti did full justice to it.

Edit : Before I completely forget let me add (for previous episode) that I thought Shyam was a good guy who would most probably be a competition for our hero, making our heroine doubt whom she should marry. ah well!! Now her being confused led me to another scene (from an episode which will come quite late). The scene where she imagines her married life with both Shyam and Arnav. I have to say that I absolutely find her daydreaming capability equal parts hilarious and equal parts cute.

2. But do they really part on the road? She remains on his mind throughout that episode.

True and not only Anjali Akash senses it too when he asked about the dent. Akash's words confirms that he has understood that someone has disturbed the balance of ASR more than the dent in his car.

So the question is, has Shyam seen the film footage? Does he know at his point that his own brother-in-law is responsible for Khushi having left Lucknow?
PS: Mamiji's catchphrase has caught us all in its hold. I have often found myself saying Hello hi bye bye in the start of a conversation.

I wish we could get an answer for this. But I believe (and I may be wrong) that Shyam didn't know about the footage otherwise he might not have risked his own life with so many white lies. He definitely won't have gotten Khushi employed at one of AR's offices. With Raizada name he must have some other connections to help her in getting a job somewhere else.

Now why is it, Sisters, that when I stuff my mouth with laddoos, I look revolting, but when Ms Irani does it, she looks cute. Humph!

Same plight here. Ms Irani can stuff her mouth with laddoos, samosas but she never stops looking cute and here is the sisterhood

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 012

Meet La-1-Ya

1. The season which begins with this episode and concludes with Khushi's resignation contain some of my favourite IPKKND scenes. Like many of our Sisters, I have a thing for office romance. It probably helps that I've never worked in an office setting otherwise reality would speedily check my fantasies.

I have worked in an office setting, actually have been working for quite some time and yet my IPKKND fantasies have never been under check. I still dream of a young, handsome, akdoo Laad Governor of a boss but all I get is... chalo jane do

2. I confess that when I was watching IPKKND in 2012, I didn't enjoy Lavanya. I know many did. And rightly so. She is a well-written character and the role is realized by a very capable, very attractive actress. The casting also contributes to her likeability. Though her exterior is flashy, there is palpable warmth there. And her first scene with Arnav shows that she is loving. Also, from story perspective, Lavanya cannot be scripted as a typical cold-hearted serial vamp. If she was than we would question our Hero's judgment because it is clear that he sincerely cares about her.

Of course he does. Like he won't have cut the cake if not for Lavanya as he didn't believe in birthdays or anniversary celebrations

3. The Arnav that I find compelling (and try to capture in my writing) is the Arnav we see in the first scene with Lavanya. He is not cold and indifferent, it's just that he is very focused and serious about his work. He is capable of affection but he doesn't display it. Yes, he is shouty but that is when his work is compromised. As we saw in the scene at the office. Did you notice at the end of the episode when Lavanya gave Khushi that ultimatum----she sounded an awful lot like Arnav. When Arnav offers someone a choice, it is clear that there is only one possible outcome. And it is the outcome he desires. Lavanya has clearly learnt from the best.

4. As a student writer, I thought the IPKKND writers found a very clever solution to a tricky challenge. Consider this: A romance requires that the Hero and Heroine share space. But these two despise each other. If there was some spark of interest then they would create their own opportunities to meet. But they won't; so the writers must. How to accomplish this? Two ways: Have Khushi enter his home or his work. They decide on the office first and save the home invasion for a later track. But even so, Arnav would never employ her. Nor would Lavanya. However Lavanya hiring Khushi is more believable than Arnav doing it. But will this be believable to viewers? It's clear that Khushi is highly unsuitable. Lavanya would never select her unless under some duress. Enter Sonia. Brilliant! Create an even greater evil so that in contrast Khushi seems like a favourable choice. I completely agree

5. By the way, I know this is a fashion house and the costuming has to be such that Khushi appears out-of-place and very unlike Lavanya----however, I found Lavanya's costume more club than corporate. I think a fitted suit or a little-black-dress would have been a better choice and would still convey style and modernity. I notice that on South Asian serials, whenever the stylist wants to suggest a female character is modern and fashionable they resort to showing more skin. I'm a believer of modesty in dress so perhaps this is just my bias.

I agree with your point above. But let me add that in South Asian serials skin show is more done for vamps or the girl they want to show as unsuitable for the hero (I find it highly disturbing). They use short dresses as a measure by which a girl (in fiction) shall be rejected which is wrong on many levels (viewers are mainly females so such portrayal of another female is unacceptable for me. Also that some viewers make this their permanent bias for judgement)

Ep 013

1. I confess, my opinion of Nani sank today. The Matriarch of a distinguished family should not---ought not!---riffle through her grandson's bedroom. It is undignified. And I think this is an inconsistency in the characterization of Nani. Because she was introduced to us as a dignified lady. Ethical. Devout. With the highest standards of how to live in this world. In fact, these are the qualities which distinguish her from Mami. Mami?---now if Mami was riffling through Akaash's bedroom it would not surprise me.

Yes this was not required. A nosy grandmother can still be made look good but such techniques are not good. I must add that I myself recently started rewatching it and there are scenes where Nani behaved with Mami like Arnav behaved with Khushi (or will behave in future) like how Nani says something like "samajhne ke liye kisi zheez ka hona bhi zaruri howat hai", Mami's reaction is of some thinking and contemplation. It reminded me of the scene where Arnav tells Khushi that "us cheez ko dimaag kehte hain Khushi).
