Sigh! Maya, would dearly love to do an entire treatise on these two and IPKKND...five years and counting of our lives! However with the terrible pressure of a crazy job and the fact that I already spend the bulk of my spare time watching VMs or reruns of the show or reading fan fiction on them, I think I better pass on steering this ship and leave it in your able hands. Of course will pitch in when you need me...always around. But yeah...life is pretty crazy...not even Khushi Kumari Gupta style crazy! Haha! Meanwhile, thank you for doing this Nostalgia thing. You could not have given this show of ours a bigger tribute!

Thank you, Anu---I'm so enjoying this project.
I will continue to look out for your insights :-)

And we are on to Episode 15. As you said Maya, stunning in its simplicity and the sheer chemistry of the leads. Put them in one frame and you can feel the zing. Manju ji from the canteen decides she has had quite enough of Sim, Pam and La slaughtering Khushi mission. She sorts things out for Khushi in a metaphor she can relate to and tells her that to bring harmony and reign like a queen at her in-laws' home she will need to sort out her sisters in law and mother in law...Pam, Sim and La in that order. And also listen to everything her husband, namely ASR, the MD has to say. The viewers ofcourse at this point are left hoping "Wah, Manju ji, aapke muh mein ghee shakkar!"

In the pretext of getting her Appointment Letter signed by the devil, Khushi makes her way up to ASR's cabin, only to straight away start off on the wrong foot and end up chasing the fly-away letter that lands under the table. She almost knocks over Anjali's photograph in her hurry to get after it. Ah, the symbolism of it all...I remember back in the day, when I was still a rather silent reader on the forum, reading reams on how Khushi would unwittingly create havoc in Anjali's life! So Arnav and Khushi finally come face to face and he looks set to give her a hard time...again...the next episode of course, Maya is our all-time memorable scene, where they get into one more argument and he drops her from the first floor...or is it? Let us see...like you I resisted the impulse to continue watching. Let's build some suspense, eh?😆

Meanwhile, back in Shantivan, Mami and Nani are yet again at each other's throats, this time for Mami's rather inconsiderate comment on Anjali's husband's choosing to send her a really small diamond ring, which Mami interestingly compares to the size of an ant's leg! Haha, I love all the colourful phrases, the language as well as the music on this show are as much the heroes if you will, as the protagonists are, don't you agree? So many amazing proverbs and puns, it would be no exaggeration to say I vastly improved my Hindi grammar after IPK! 😆 Nani continues to try and get some information from Anjali as to who Chottey might be seeing...again without much luck. She promises not to give up, though! Also, we realize how Anjali harbours a deep seated insecurity about her polio afflicted leg and feels almost grateful that her husband deigned to marry someone like her. Nani swiftly rejected her belief and tells her she is a diamond and her husband is the lucky one here.

As you said, the curiosity about Anjali's husband is slowly building up. All in all, one very happening episode...What will happen next!

Let's check out Episode 16 tomorrow! 👏

Best,

Anu

I liked Naniji's and Anjali's interactions in this episode. Naniji cannot stand Mami's shallowness. Mamiji behaves as if she was born and brought up in riches when that is far from the truth. I like Naniji. She is the pillar of that family. She is a warm person as well as a strong one. She sees same kind of warmth, understanding and strength of character in Khushi behind all her craziness. Every family needs someone like that to hold them together.
Loved Manjuji's analogies. They will soon realize that taming ASR is not an easy task.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 016

Enter Maidaan

1. Almost to the exclusion of all other genres, my reading/viewing is primarily dramatic serials. And within that genre, the holy grail for me are stories which feature an alpha anti-hero paired with an imperfectly perfect heroine. She has to be impudent and daring. And if he has a cruel streak---even better! This is all a preface to say that for me Episode 16 is not only the most perfectly executed episode, but the distillation of a perfect serial.

2. So much to say. Where do I begin my adulation? Why not at the last scene? I love how the conference room scene is staged and choreographed. Some of you know that David is my favourite Old Testament King. And this is a David and Goliath moment. Arnav with everything on his side, every advantage, every weapon at his disposal---contrasted with Khushi who has nothing more than her spunk and a slingshot. Notice Arnav's posture on the sofa. Relaxed. Imperious. A king on his throne, surrounded by his courtiers, graciously receiving ambassadors from foreign lands. Many subtleties here, but one that exemplifies Arnav's entire attitude towards Khushi is that at first he does not even deign to move or speak to her. She is a nuisance. He gives Lavanya a look which reads: There is a mosquito in the room. Get rid. Khushi is not worth his energy.

3. He only comes to his feet when Khushi squashes Lavanya . Still he is not agitated. And that he allows Khushi to speak and continue speaking is telling. He is rather amused in a bored way. Like Goliath was, I suspect. "Seriously? This kid wants to take me on?! Hilarious. Let's hear him out." Arnav has probably not been addressed in this manner since he was a young boy. If ever! As he walks toward her, he looks like a man who wants to have a closer look at strange specimen.

4. The pivotal moment---that moment which alters the entire equation between them is when she summons all her courage and takes a step forward to meet him. I believe he is now stimulated by her. A man like Arnav thrives on challenge. And challenges come very rarely when one is the established King of the World. Everyone in the room now disappears. They are alone and together in one frame. Maybe I'm projecting too much of my desires into this scene, but when he proposes the deal, I feel he wants her to accept it. I think he wants to play. And, Jalebi Jane would go so far as to say that he will be disappointed in her if she now backs down.

5. I want to say so much more---haven't even got to the fall---but it would be remiss of me to close my five points without appreciation for the lead performers. The writers have outdone themselves. But they need the calibre of actors to bring life to their words. What Mr Sobti and Ms Irani brought to this scene cannot be scripted or even directed. This scene shows me that they have now embodied these characters. Whew. I must go and rest now. Too much excitement for my weak heart.

Yes, I loved how Manju (Episode 16) came to her, helped her up, gave her a cup of tea and some homegrown wisdom.

In the pretext of getting her Appointment Letter signed by the devil, Khushi makes her way up to ASR's cabin, only to straight away start off on the wrong foot and end up chasing the fly-away letter that lands under the table. That's a nice observation re: Anjali's photo. I saw the literal risk, if she saw the photograph, recognized Anjali etc. But I love the symbolic interpretation much more.

Also, we realize how Anjali harbours a deep seated insecurity about her polio afflicted leg and feels almost grateful that her husband deigned to marry someone like her. Nani swiftly rejected her belief and tells her she is a diamond and her husband is the lucky one here.

Loved Nani in that scene. Because neither Nani nor Anjali mention the leg, I had initially assumed that she was referring to that gunshot flashback.

Maya,

My dear Jalebi Jane, you have surpassed yourself with the fabulous reference to David and Goliath, one of my favourite stories too, growing up. And now that you mention it, those early stories were all about such elements of excellence. The camera angles, the posturing of the characters, the music, the art direction, all unparalleled. I loved Arnav and Khushi in this one. As you said, he is now suitably challenged. This is probably the moment he starts taking her seriously, because for ASR winning is everything and deals are what makes the world go around. The last scene certainly was very defining of the shape of things to come. The audience is as much in readiness to see the battles between these two opposing Titans begin. Cos although Khushi does not have a formidable force behind her like Mr Raizada does, she has her spunk, chutzpah, never say die attitude and her best friend Devi Maiya. And the world has been conquered with less in the past, hasn't it? Why David was the perfect example!

Waiting for the next one, now, girl! 👏

Best,

Anu

Episode 1 - I for one don't enjoy when makers decide to spend one full week in making the leads meet with several missed meetings. It's like giving viewers a clue that they won't last together for long. Thanks to the makers they didn't take the old & overused route here.

Episode 02 - I don't know how many IPK fans feel the same but I hated the dori scene. No, the acting was bang on but I simply couldn't digest that the hero would do something like this. It was after this scene that I decided to not watch the show. I watched it very irregularly after this scene, more like once or twice a month. It was only around Dec-Jan that I started watching it and it was quite later that I watched all the previous episodes.

Episode 03 - I loved this episode for many reasons. It establishes a lot of characteristics of these two and everybody else. I specially loved the moment where Khushi bends backwards when Arnav comes near her but doesn't step back. As you have mentioned it shows that she is scared but she won't give in to her fears.😊
Oh and she her trying to catch her breath and asking him to wait is hilarious. It is quintessential Khushi Kumari Gupta😆
