Drabble: Healing
A: So Chikita what do you want to be when you grow up?
P: What is that supposed to mean?
A: I just get the sense that this receptionist thing is temporary for you. You're meant for something else in life.
P: I'm really happy here. The job sort of fell into my lap but it's really working for me now, so I'm not really thinking about anything else.
A: Really? But you know what they say, you only live once. Don't you think you should have an eye for your future, start building towards your next big step?
P: I'm sort of done taking big steps for now. The past little while has been...difficult. So these days I'm just focusing on the present.
A: *sigh* Yeah, I kind of know what you mean. Taking it one day at a time.
P: Exactly.
A &P: *sitting together in thoughtful silence*
A: It's just...Chikita...
P: Mmm?
A: Don't you get frustrated, sometimes? About just being in this phase of your life that's kind of like...floating? Don't you sometimes want...an anchor to your past, or a map for where you're going?
P: Is that how you feel? Floating and lost?
A: A little. Sometimes.
P: One thing I've learned lately...sometimes you have to just let life happen. It can be healing.
A: *frowning* What happened to you, that needs healing?
P: *glances at him beneath her lashes, then looks away* There was a car accident and I...I sort of lost someone who was important to me.
A: ...Sort of?
P: He survived but we're not together anymore.
A: Oh...that's...rough.
P: Yeah. So that's what I mean about just letting life happen. One day I'll have plans and goals again, but for now I'm just learning to live without him.
A: Was he that special to you?
P: *small laugh* I told him once, he taught me how to live...
A: Then do you think he would be ok with you continuing your life like this, just existing, not reaching for the stars?
P: The moon.
A: Sorry?
P: The moon. We used to chase the moon...
A: *realizes her eyes are filled with tears* Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to remind you of something that made you sad.
P: *quickly wipes her eyes* What? No, it's fine, I'm not, I'm...*trails off, can't finish her sentence because she's too emotional*
A: *pulls her into a hug*
P: What are you - what are we -
A: One day at a time.
P: Oh...*melts against him, giving herself permission to enjoy the moment and just hug him back*
A: *tucks her head under his chin, strokes her back comfortingly, and wonders if he's a bad person for being glad that she "sort of" lost whatever idiot it was that didn't come back to her, because...if she hadn't, would she be here with him now?*
