What a fun idea this is!
I saw the promos of IPK and thought it looked interesting and was planning to just briefly watch because the chemistry in the promo had grabbed my interest and before I knew it, I was in. IPK changed me in so many ways. I discovered India forums and the fan fictions and some awsome writers and met so many friends...with whom I am still in touch...

I agree. A writer was listing the number of ways the tv show -Friends- had on him and his writing. And each of his points were equally valid for the impact IPKKND has had on me. Pure magic :-)

The only indian show I watched completely is IPKKND. I tried to watch some of the other shows but quickly lost interest. One of my friends suggested this last year. I was completely enchanted by this show. Needless to say my favourite character is our hero with gray shades Mr.ASR and whoever wrote it did a great job. He is snobbish, selfish guy but at the same time he is hard working and can go to any lengths for those who are close to him. To me Barun was a surprise package in TV. He was very apt for the role and he did complete justice to it. He has quite versatile looks. He can look suave, sophisticated and manly as well as he can exude boyish charm. His dark handsome looks were perfectly complemented by delicate waif like Sanaya.
And you already wrote a lot about our beloved heroine. The real beauty of Khushi lies in her actions and interactions with people around her.
Anjali looked every bit a sister of rich business tycoon. Only she could carry herself so gracefully in all those designer transparent sarees with single pallu. She thinks with heart while Arnav thinks with brain.
Naniji is a perfect matriarch of that family who makes decisions with her heart and mind.
Mamiji will always be a gray character who needs a firm hand like Naniji's to put her in the right track.
Loved all the other characters too.

Pari, I like what you say of Mr Sobti's appropriateness for this role. Arnav is both alpha and beta. And it would be difficult for an actor to pull that off convincingly.

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 010

Job For Khushi

1. This episode highlights Arnav's best qualities. He enters Shantivan and sees Mami rush past him in tears as the Jeweller departs with a pile of velvet boxes. The writers don't show us what happened next but from the results we can conclude that he must have stopped the Jeweller. He discovered from him which set Mami most preferred, immediately purchased it and then gave Anjali the pleasure of presenting his gift to Mami. This shows us that he is generous, intuitive, and honourable. He does not forget those who have been supportive of him. He will not be persuaded away from what he believes is right action. And what is due to one member of the family---even when it means that he will gain the disapproval of another. His speech to Nani foreshadows their future clashes, vis-a-vis his decision to enter a live-in arrangement with Lavanya.

2. This episode also highlights our Heroine's best qualities. She knows what a situation demands and will not be deterred by narrow thinking. Payal is oblivious to how stressed Buaji is about meeting household expenses. But Khushi is sensitive to such things. And she points it out. I love the girls' subsequent naatak in order to convince Buaji of the necessity of taking a job. And Buaji's imaginary prognostications about their life in poverty made me laugh.

3. I'm not usually very merciful to Buaji in my writing. Especially in -Jalebi-. But I bet Abha Parmar was a hoot on set. She has such presence. She is both terrifying and hilarious. I was recently watching -Special 26- with Dad and when Mrs Parmar appeared on screen, I exclaimed "Buaji!" Dad gave me a strange look.

4. I know we have been indoctrinated to hate Shyam but I really love the way he teases Khushi in these early episodes. He clearly finds her entertaining. This is a case of the villain receiving all the heroine's smiles while the hero receives only her glares. A bit like the Wickham-Lizzy-Darcy triangle.

5. My favourite moment of the episode is when Khushi climbs through the window and dashes to the front door to greet Buaji and Payal. She is so adorable. "Welcome home! I've been waiting for the two of you for ages!" Our darling Khushi.

Dear Sisters:

In December 2015, I was invited to join 18 clever-talented-passionate Sisters to celebrate IPKKND Ek Jashn by contributing a story. It was such a lot of fun.
Here is the related India Forum thread, if you are not familiar with the project.

My story is titled -Mrs Raizada-. It consisted of 4 short episodes.

After posting it, several Sisters encouraged me to add to it. They felt it was too abrupt an ending. I resisted because I prefer endings which leave something to the imagination. And, dammit!----I was trying to be experimental! :-)

However, as you know, the Sisterhood is never wrong. I revisited the story earlier this year and decided to add to it. In fact, I ended up adding QUITE a bit so it is no longer a short story but a short serial.

In any case, I would like to share the entire serial here over the next few weeks. The episodes are frustratingly short because they were written in 30-minute increments. I'll share the original four episodes first and then the rest.

Lovely take Maya. The highlight for me too in the episode was Arnav's benevolence and Khushi's intuition towards the growing expenditures. You have penned the thoughts beautifully and BTW this happens to be one of my favourite episodes of IPK ben though Arhi were not there. I enjoyed the clash of the Titans- nani and ASR and I loved how good he was shown to be too.
PS caught up today, will be back later.

Hello N,
I had forgotten how fierce Nani was in the early episodes. Poor Anjali! She is impeccable in her conduct, yet ends up in the middle of Nani's battles with Arnav and with Mami.

Delicious analysis, Maya. Yes, yes, because these are first glimpses as you rightly said to the innate goodness of Arnav Singh Raizada who is a provider, preserver and eternal softie when it comes to his family. He does not forget old favours and will spar with Nani if need be to make sure Mami knows no sadness, as he clearly remembers his tough days and the people who stood by him and Di. Khushi too redeems herself for her earlier eccentricities by entering the house in time and opening the door for Buaji and Payal in time. You are quite right about Shyam. Although we were all conditioned to loathe him, and he most certainly deserved that, no doubts at all, these earlier episodes showed us a different side of him altogether. One where he comes through as a simple, hard working, care worn man who is generous enough to find someone from his hometown a job and is besotted enough by the girl from Lucknow to stalk her unwittingly...meeting her at temples, chaay ke dukaan and what have you to jest with her...hmm...

I am catching up on this commentary on our much loved serial and Khushi :-)

I noticed that you have five bullet points for each episode and remembered your talking about 5 and its significance.

Shyam was actually quite likeable in the first few episodes, I thought. He even looked different. As his evil intentions were disclosed, they made him look and laugh more like a villian too :-) He is definetely smooth-talker if nothing else and had the whole Gupta family fall for that charm, as he did the Raizada family!

Even now, when I re-watch some of these episodes I do laugh out loud at Khushi's antics - she is a wonderful actress!

I am a late joiner here and I'll try to cover up with what I missed. Honestly, my joining the IPKKND-watch group was very late. I was still school when it started and my Paa preferred my watching MTV than Hindi serials. And saying that for him is a lot. I caught upon the moments again when I was in college and had pools of free internet, that is a boon in India. And all credits for that go to DIsmailVegamze. Such a charm. This was the YouTube uploaded who would cut all the episodes and present the main clips in Love Scenes.
I agree and accept that I cannot be a full-blown IPKKND fanatic until I know all the characters and I submit that before i vuod do any of that, I was caught up in the web of these beautiful fan-fictions in, if I remember correctly, Jun-2014.

And has this been a heartfelt journey-ah, how to explain.

And you paved my way towards the adoring-the-mushy-heart with all sensibilities required, for I was a love-story lover who would rebuke herself for watching Korean drama and secretly reading Sylvia Day, self-judging them to be trashy. That was the time that my love for novels switched to my bulk-gulp of pretty, explosive fan-fics and my falling deeper and deeper. And I am still lying in the Grand Canyon and boy, is it beautiful from here.

Arnav in our serial is such a provider. As Expel suitabely points out in Shaadi, he wants to be the only provider around. And does he ever do anything half-hearted!

Surprisingly, Khushi is surprisingly very similar to him in this aspect because they usually say that opposites attract. Our -Khushi gives a glimpse of Kashaf Murtaza from Zindagi Gulzar Hai.

I liked your parallel with Darcy-Lizzy-Wickham. Oh, does a story ever leave a reader! And I couldn't hold myself before drawing a similar parallel to Sacrlette-Rhett-Ashley trio at several instances. There are several, several differences. But several, several uncanny resemblances.

A lot much can be said and still not be enough, but one thing remains unbeatable. There was something which went irrevocably right with IPKKND and it changed several, several lives. In that, in the words of Saroj Khan and Madhuri Dixit, it was Puhh-fect.

Anu, as I watch these early scenes, I feel that he began very innocently. He was just a nice guy. And then his niceness turned to attraction then infatuation then madness and...we all know. But in a way that makes his actions even more insidious---because the writers are depicting the fickle nature of some men. And that is very real for very many.
