Firstly, the couple getting together will end the show in the CVs' mind, so they need to do a little heartache and pain through drama. But I love Namik playing heartbroken, he does it so well! Playing games in love and fighting is fun! I enjoyed today's episode for this reason. Here are the things that made this episode so great:
1. There were two dulhans and two grooms today - the themed red of Preeti and Sumo made it clear that Sumo is a bride-to-be. It was beautifully paired. Shravan looked killer in a prince coat while Pushkar did the lesser, cute groom bit.
2. Lalaji's aashirvad led to a focus on Ramnath and Shravan. It was a great little addition by the CVs, Ramnath has the same dreams for Shravan and Shravan was already in sehra and coat looking every bit like every dad's proud dream. This is why his parents are both so obsessed with him in different ways, he's an only child and what an accomplished and pretty one, they just can't believe he's real and a product of the two of them.
3. The focus on Shravan v. Aditya showed the differences in their quiet, brooding introvert v. chill, happy extrovert personalities. As a viewer, I was also struck by how two people with the same features and similar heights look so different. Ronit is a good looking guy, esp. off-screen when he is a little less jumpy, but Namik must be a showstopper in real life because even among all those people he really stood out. He probably has a very hard time blending in anywhere (good looking people problems, cry me a river). So manly in every feature, I could see why everyone in the wedding (aunts, uncles, brothers, flirty girls) are so hyper aware of him, he really has presence!
4. BEST SCENE in any soap since IPK - this varmala scene. I loved loved how they used Shravan's family's height as a positive thing like it happens in real weddings. It was so natural. Every wedding has a flirty over-friendly but nice friend like Aditya. The absolutely best part was how Pushkar thought of Shravan - he is Pushy's TRUMP card. He is so proud of Shravan, he calls Shravan his "bahadur bhaiyya" with so much pride. He calls in the big guns (Shravan) when Aditya switches teams and lends his height to the height-challenged Tiwari family (secretly about to unite with him). Waise bare bhaiyy ho toh Shravan jaisa, he's so attentive to Pushkar, no wonder Pushkar is all gaga. Pushkar also has a line about his own height where he says he can just reach Preeti after her dad and uncle pick her up a mere feet. That was a good touch.
5. Shravan in his anger, basically admitted that Sumo has his heart in a vice! He says he has physical strength even if "girls" SUMO controls the heart. That's the main part Shravan! If she has you from the inside, what is the point of outside strength? He's basically saying she's his weakness, he's wrapped around her pinky from the start. She knows him inside out, all his vulnerabilities, including the unsaid love.
6. Vandy looked amazing. Loved everything about the understated color but great fashion.
7. Symbolically, CVs successfully showed that Shravan and Sumo are connected by a dori. When Aditya pulls Sumo in the room, Shravan reacts so physically that it appears like Sumo and Shravan are at one end of a tight rope, you pull one, you drag the other one along. So where Sumo goes, Shravan physically gets pulled along and when Aditya closes the door on that connecting dori, Shravan almost loses it like it is physically affecting him. Only one actor successfully did this kind of subtle love scene before and that is Barun. He's still trending at #1 5 years after this character ended. Keep up the good work and keep that dori scene going Namik. This is seen throughout the wedding. In the varmala scene they are just behind Preeti and Pushkar and so in beat that it looks like Shravan is leaning in to put varmala on Sumo. These two are goners!
8. The friendship and love heartbreak must happen for it to become a love relationship. It is not easy for childhood best friends to become physically attracted to each other (in action) even when they feel it because they are used to seeing each other platonicly for so long. It is too familiar, like a family member. That's why they need to go through a turning point or break before they can put aside that friendship platonic side to start the more sexual attraction side of things. Two best friends have a harder time becoming romantic that two people who start off being attracted to each other with a relationship in mind. This is part of their growing up and growing different together process. For this both need to change, for Shravan it may even be changing from being a yes-man friend to an angry, jilted lover for a while. And he has some evolving to do in his misogyny meanwhile.
9. Small touches like Shravan's comments on marriage and him saying to Pushkar to think again in good humor were so natural. It happens all the time, the teasing. Like an older brother, Shravan is always around to help (like Sumo) when needed and he asked Pushkar how he's feeling after each step. That's a good, protective older brother. He is even a good-brother-in-law who does not avoid Preeti, he calls her "Dulhaniaji." That shows he's not snobby and does not consider above chatting with the little ones like many I know in real life.
10. Finally red (Sumo) and black (Shravan) go really well together for brides and grooms. Even better than red (Preeti) and blue (Pushkar). Even Pushkar is proud when girls tease and flirt with the idea of how handsome Shravan is at the wedding. Those little touches is what made this episode so great. It made the wedding seem very real. Nanaji and Nirmala are only trying to be good guardians, they are not actually the worst of the arranged marriage crew, they think they are setting up a love-marriage and watching out for their charges. Sumo and Shravan's family both respect them as older siblings, they TRUMP CARDS of the family. These two are well-matched and will come together sooner or later. Enjoy the ride there because the journey to love through all the heartache is the best part!
There were always two things going on in every scene, it was so layered. One on the surface, another under and a touch of the real and natural wedding details. Well done, CVs! I am seeing the old crew again that used to do scenes like the first few Nirmala scenes, the Ramnath death scene, and Guglu flirtation scenes.
