Truly was surprised to see you back here! I am very happy to explore your new commitment and the famous 5 points have detailed out and expressed the core of the introduction/opening of the serial. It's beautiful to relieve an old addiction, it makes you nostalgic hence you have aptly termed this post. I look forward to more here!

Ha ha! So true, the serial is over, it ended in bad taste yet here we are after years still drooling over the fictional characters and plotting our own imaginations for these people and connected by virtual thread due to our craziness

It's difficult to speak of favourite episodes when it comes to IPKKND. There are so many to choose from. And each is favoured for different reasons. But for me this episode would be very near the top of the list.

1. Because this is the episode where Arnav's power over me begins to form. This is where I begin to see the Hero potential in him. Not only because I find Mr Sobti really attractive with the hankerchief bandana ;-) but because Arnav becomes three-dimensional in this episode. The breakfast scene tells us that there is a chink in his armour--and her name is Anjali. We see that he is capable of feeling for someone. And also that he is capable of putting his own preferences aside to please another. This is an essential heroic quality.

2. And in this aspect, Arnav and Khushi are identical. This episode establishes that both will endure and suffer for their respective siblings. A theme that will forward the plot and weave all the way to the very last episode.

3. I also love this episode because we see the madcap Khushi. Not only is Ms Irani exceptional in the dramatic tense scenes, but she is a superb comedic actress. That scene where she chases Arnav down. Brilliantly shot and executed."Ja, Khushi, ja!"I laughed out loud at the bit where she's opposite him, doubled over trying to catch breath so she can then tell him off. And she is so lovely in white. That scene earlier when she walks past him and her dupatta caresses his face is THE moment when I fell in love with them and their potential. The moment when I knew I had to keep watching. I had to see for myself how the writers would transform mutual loathing to love.

4. And I loved that the writers tricked us into expecting that a distraught Khushi was going to commit suicide, only to introduce us to her jalebi-making habit. This clever reversal is a statement from the writers that we should not expect the usual tv serial fare from them.

5. I also want to mention the scene when the neighbours come around to apologize. This is important, I feel---because it establishes that Khushi's actions were right and that she has not destroyed Payal but has actually saved her. And the writers are introducing to us that quality in Khushi which will emerge again and again---that is, her intentions are always faultless but there is a fault in how she executes those intentions.

Oh Maya! I am absolutely loving this! It reminds me how much I missed your writings and analysis. These initial episodes of angry man Arnav stumps me when I watch it now since I remember the transformation he underwent by the time of Akash's wedding hawan. The tenderness awww and those long stares instead of glares!! Oh yes, SI has amazing comic timing without overdoing it!

Many would concur with your view. The early episodes did create a promise that ultimately went unrealized. But this is how I feel and I'm pleased to have the chance to express it:

1. Those who write know that writing is difficult. Sustaining a serial is even more difficult. And I suspect that when there is a Middle-man (StarPlus) between the Creator (4Lions) and the Viewer (You) then it becomes very-very difficult to create a produclt that has integrity.

2. I am in awe of what the IPKKND Creative Team achieved. I met some of the Sisterhood when I was recently in India, and the common theme was this: none of us saw ourselves as typical tv serial viewers. In fact, most expressed disdain for the genre. But IPKKND reached us. It moved many. It even awakened some. That is an achievement by the writers that is not insignificant. And it is not diminished just because the serial fizzled near the end.

3. If the writing decisions in the last third of the serial reneged on the original promise, I look upon it as a shame---but not a disgrace. It does not diminish the genius of the earlier episodes. IPKKND set the bar really high. Maybe even too high for themselves to sustain. I am not a professional writer but I know that feeling of writing a few brilliant episodes and then hitting a block. And all the Sisters I met said that they have not found any other product which even approaches IPKKND. Most no longer watch tv serials because the memory of IPKKND is so strong. Which is better? A serial that shows genius, aims high but ultimately misses its mark? -OR- A serial which is mediocre and meets the promise but ultimately forgettable?

4. Maya Angelou wrote, "...people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." We will never forget how IPKKND made us feel. Even though it has been 4.5 years since I saw the durgah episode, when I watched it again yesterday, my heart went "whoosh!" And I fell in love with love all over again. That will be remembered longer than how the show wobbled at the end.

5. My final point is this---and it is not intended to offend anyone: I truly feel that writers who are given permission to aim high, strive and fail will one day give you something that will blow all your expectations away. Support a writer when they stumble. Applaud them when they rise. I heard a German proverb recently which goes something like this: "Those who stumble well will never fall."

I agree to all 5 points here strongly. Your thoughts are very clear and precise. I am sure if the CVs read these 5 points, their hearts would swell in happiness. Because it's not everyday they get appreciation. Most of the time writers when they fail to deliver get criticism and their earlier efforts are forgotten. Hence your points here are significant as it truly shows how much they had influenced. It's true, I am still fondly thinking of IPKKND because of what it made me feel once and that feel is still sustained inspite of whatever happened and of course it gave me wonderful sisters like you for which I am eternally grateful!

IPKKND Nostalgia: Episode 004

Khushi on TV

At the Writers' Meeting for this episode, I imagine they were given this instruction: Writers, you have 26 minutes to show the viewers that Arnav is an arrogant, vindictive, elitist, godless man who worships at the altar of wealth and power. And Khushi is his exact opposite.

1. One of Khushi's most inspiring qualities is that she is not cowed by those who have a worldly advantage over her. She truly believes that her faith and her values are the highest currency one can possess. That is why she can stand in the middle of the durgah marketplace (wearing only one mojri!) and deliver a lesson on conduct to a man who can make her quake with just one look. She is both plucky and timid, often within the same minute. There is that tantalizing moment when Arnav is walking away from her. She's pursuing him, berating him, "Who do you think you are? You think you can do whatever you want with impunity?" He stops, turns, fixes her with a look and asks, "Why? What did I do?" She looks at him hesitatingly. All her earlier courage evaporates. She was thinking of the dori incident. His eyes show that he knows it and they dare her to spell it out.

2. I love how that battle is choreographed. It's a pivotal point. It begins with Arnav walking away, dismissing her as a nobody. As a nuisance. And ends with him watching her walk away after delivering her parting salvo. He can no longer ignore her. Nor claim indifference. She has thrown down the gauntlet and he picks it up. Now it is Arnav Singh Raizada versus Khushi+her Devi Maiyya.

3. But neither can our Heroine dismiss him. When Payal asks how the dori broke, Khushi returns to that moment. The scene that follows is beautifully written and edited. It cuts back and forth between Khushi with Payal and Arnav with Akaash. And their respective conversations are pasted together as though it was one conversation.

4. That scene is also special for another reason. We see Khushi's flair for filmi drama. I adore this madcap side of her. We also see the significant role she plays in the Gupta family. She is their sunshine. With her charm and effervescence she restores happiness to the household. I think Khushi plays the role that a son might have played in the family. Payal stays at home to make tea for Buaji, and Khushi goes with her parents to settle the wedding expenses. And when that vendor taunts them with snide remarks about the non-wedding, it is Khushi who puts him in his place. And catches an error in his calculations!

5. For me, the most outrageous scene in this episode was not that Khushi was shamed and vilified on every television screen in the nation. It was that Arnav slapped that obnoxious man at the photo-shoot---and then paid handsomely for the privilege. I suppose the writers wanted to give an early clue that Arnav is hypersensitive to any mention of his mother---but it gave a shade to his character that unsettled me. I can also understand that the writers wanted to show that Arnav believes everyone has a price. But the slapping suggests a man who lacks self-control. I thought that Arnav Singh Raizada had his passions firmly under control.

It's very interesting reading your thoughts and observations :)
I agree with you about point 5. Arnav's slap and payment to that photographer spoke of an uncouthness, which didn't sit well with ASR's character.
