Even in Mahabharat times, women held more freedom (I think). No Sati - Satyavati and Kunti lived long after their husbands. No purdah system. Draupadi and Krishna were good friends almost like the ones you see today 👍🏼. None of them were veiled or confined to antapurs. There is recognition of individuality of most of the women. Draupadi cheer-haran was one black spot but rightly, it is censured throughout the story and not glorified like Sati.

Wonder what led to practices like Sati and Veils and child-marriages. I shudder to think of the life of a woman in India in those times.

Yes. It was much better south. There has never been the purdah system or Sati. Child marriages were not uncommon though. The princesses and queens had their recognition. In fact, Raja Raja Chola's elder sister was his adviser all through his reign. She was supposed to be very intelligent and her opinions were sought even by their father. Even after her marriage she continued to stay with her brother and guided and helped him in administration. In fact the Brihadeeshwara temple was also supposed to be built at her suggestion.

Maybe like Lashy said, women were confined and imposed upon more after the invasions.😕

@Bold...Well said! 👏

Agree with the rest too.

True. Women had comparatively more freedom in the Ancient times than anytime later. Particularly in the Early Vedic Age.

Even I think the confinements were result of the various invasions.
