Chapter : 9
Finally, Sam thought as the gates to the palace opened. Finally they had reached the palace. God, how could someone talk so much so irritably?! Already Sam could feel a headache forming. Sam had once thought only bubbly girls could talk this much, having spent lots of time with such a girl, said girl being her best friend, Ria Malhotra.
Remembering Ria so suddenly gave slight pang of guilt in Sam's heart. They had a stupid fight the day before Sam somehow transported to the past. She had not even thought of her since then. To be honest, there had been no time to think about anything but being a princess and getting married. Then there was Shahenshah. Of course, SHAHENSHAH. That man was impossible. Which brought Sam to the present.
As the man opened his mouth to say something annoying yet again, Sam finally snapped. "Would you just shut up already?" Sam did not think she could take any more of this. The last one hour was total torture.
An hour earlier . . .
Sam sat stiffly on the horse in front of 'her husband' as the man guided the horse gently, contrast to the Shahenshah that Sam had come to know all these days. But that was not as surprising as it should be. Many a cruel man who had absolutely no compassion for people would be fiercely passionate and protective about their pets.
"Are you well, Begum? I do not imagine you would be after what you experienced." He said, his tone for once seemed to be genuine. Which turned out to be a trick. Because the next moment he said. "I hear women cannot tolerate such extreme conditions, I hear they cry like babies."
His mocking tone made Sam retort in a way she never thought she would speak, "I hear only impotent men try to lower women with words to feel significant about themselves ."
Sam thought it would rile him up, anger him. But instead of the rage that she expected, Shahenshah gave a low and deep chuckle. "You have quite a tongue you, Princess of Malwa. I hope I can get used to it one day"
Sam did not miss the hidden innuendo in his words. "Careful, Shahenshah. It lashes out like a whip to cut down hearts."
He gave another chuckle. "I do not have a heart. And nor am I impotent." He whispered in Sam's ear.
Sam smirked. "I never said you were."
"No, but that is what you meant." He continued his whispering. " Shall we test your theory? Right now?" Sam could hear the sinister smile in his voice.
Even as he tensed to move his body forward to bridge the gap between them, Sam growled. "Don't you dare."
This time, Shahenshah laughed outright. "Or what?"
In anger, Sam retorted, "Or I will make you impotent, Shahenshah." She gritted her teeth.
Shahenshah abruptly wrapped a hand around Sam's waist. Sam let out a squeak before she composed herself. "You are either very brave or very stupid, using my title of respect with the same words used to insult me."
Sam scoffed. "I do not respect you. Not in the least. If I respected you, I would not have called you Shahenshah. Because that is a title, not your name. And according to me, someone's name can hold more respect than any other title. It is due to that respect one earns a title. But respect has to be earned as well, not demanded."
Behind her, Shahenshah laughed, "You Rajvanshi princesses. You sure can argue."
Sam frowned. "That is the second time you said princesses. Do you know any other princess than me?"
"What? Do you not know?" He sounded genuinely surprised.
"What do I not know?" Sam asked.
"I married Amer's princess Jodha a month ago." He replied.
Sam was shocked. What the hell? Sam knew he had many wives but this was just a whole new level.
"You married a month ago? And you did not think to say anything?" Sam said indignantly.
"Why? Are you jealous, my Begum?"
Sam snorted. She and jealous? Because the guy was married? How ridiculous!
"In your dreams." She said. "You married a month ago and instead of spending time with your new wife, you came to marry me? Some husband you are!"
"How could I not? Your slap and my revenge were calling me. Besides, my new wife, like you, does not want to spend time with me." He sounded affronted.
"Oh, really?" Sam smirked. "Then she has good choice. I can say, without meeting her, that she and I will be great friends."
"Why? Do you not have any friends where you come from?" He mocked. "Are people there too hesitant with you to befriend you? With your attitude, I would not blame them."
"I would not blame them." Sam mockingly imitated him. "For your information, I had friends, good friends."
"Oh, God. I can not imagine their lives. Did you torture them like you torture me?" He laughed.
Sam tortured him? SAM tortured HIM?! "You bloody...
So it continued the hour. . . .
Sam was so relieved that they had finally reached the palace. She did not think she could tolerate anymore of this torture.
Sam could see women standing just behind the gates of the palace. Prominent among them were four women, an elderly woman with puja thali in her hands, two young women adorned in Mughal clothes and another young woman wearing Rajvanshi clothes. Sam guessed this was Jodha.
As the women saw their condition, they quickly rushed towards them. They were worried, Sam could see.
"Ya Allah, what happened?" The elderly woman asked.
"Nothing, Ammijaan. It was ..." Shahenshah could not say anymore as he was interrupted.
"Do not say that, Jalal. This is not nothing. Look at how much you are injured." She said as she frantically looked for injuries on Shahenshah. There was one on his forehead, one on his right shoulder and a few on his hands and arms. Sam noticed them before but did not say anything. He did not look like he was in pain. Sam figured compared to what Shahenshah had faced in numerous wars, this was nothing. Besides, Sam had no sympathy for the heartless bas***d.
"And what about my new daughter-in-law?" She asked as she looked past Shahenshah to see the conditions of her 'new daughter-in-law'. "Oh dear," she gasped as she took in the injuries on Sam.
She rushed to Sam. "Oh Allah, what has happened to you, beti?" Sam started at the address of affection used so casually. No one has called her beti in a long time. Her mother used to call her beti and her father called her princess. After her mother's death, not one had called her beti.
Sam pushed away those thoughts and recovered herself. "I am fine, Amm ..." Sam stopped herself. She had not ideal how Shahenshah's mother would react to being called Ammijaan by her. She was her son's wife, not her daughter.
The elderly woman smiled knowingly. "Do not fret, dear. I am like your mother. You can call me Ammijaan." Sam nodded and willed herself not to cry at such affection. Instead she gave a weak smile.
"But that is for later." Ammijaan said and frowned. "Now we need to take you to the Hakima Sahiba." The doctor? They were going to take her to a doctor? Hell no. She hated hospitals and she hated doctors. She was taken to a hospital after her accident. It was in the hospital that her mother died despite the doctors' efforts and she saw the whole thing. It was in the hospital that a doctor officially declared her dead. And it was the family doctor who had held her back when she was screaming and running towards her mom who was being cremated by her father. She HATED doctors.
So naturally Sam protested. "No, Ammijaan. It is alright. 'Tis just some scratches. I will be alright." But Ammijaan did not listen to her. The woman dragged her and her 'husband' to the chambers of 'Hakima Sahiba'. As they reached the chamber, Sam realised how stupid she had been. Of course, the chambers were nothing like a hospital or even a doctors' house. It looked more like an alchemy lab she had seen the picture of in her Chemistry book.
There were a few shelves containing different kinds of herbs and chemicals, with one part of a shelf containing books. A long table where the mixing aperture, some bowls and some open books were kept. There were a few chairs scattered here and there. There was a doorway on the left which Sam assumed led to the bedroom. The Hakima herself was a friendly looking elderly woman, around the age of Ammijaan.
When she saw them, she left whatever she was doing in favor ushering them into the room and seating them onto the two most comfortable chairs. That's how Sam found herself sitting beside Shahenshah as Hakima Sahiba tended to her wounds, applying herbal pastes and bandages. Shahenshah's was long done.
"There, it is done." She said as she finished bandaging her arm. Sam gave a polite nod and smiled. "Thank you." The Hakima looked surprised for a moment before she composed herself. She smiled and returned the nod.
Suddenly, a guard outside shouted. "Saavdhan. Begum Jodha padhar rahi hai." No sooner than the guard finished than a woman adorned in rajput dresses like her arrived. Head held high, chin up. fire in eyes and a hand bent at stomach level, she looked like the epitome of Rajvnshi princess. Sam had heard Jodha was called Registaan Ka Gulaab. Now she knew why. Doe like eyes, pearl shaped face, a tanned but fair complexion and hair as black as night long enough to reach hips. She did her title more than enough justice.
She approached them with a strained smile. As she stopped in front of them, she turned towards Shahenshah. "Pranam, Shahenshah"
Shahenshah inclined his head and brought hos hand up. "Adaab, Jodha Begum. How are you?"
"I am well." She replied.
Shahenshah pretended to look hurt. "What? No asking how I am after a fight? No sympathy for my poor soul?"
Jodha rolled her eyes. "Oh, I do have sympathy, but for those who you hurt in battle. Besides, I am quite sure you can handle yourself in a fight."
Sam's lips twitched in a half smile half smirk. This Jodha girl was amazing. She turned the guy's own words against him. Sam had a feeling she and Jodha would be good friends.
Sam's train of thought broke as Jodha turned towards her. Her fiery gaze softened and her smile became genuine. "Pranam, Begum. I am ..."
She was interrupted by Sam. "Jodha Begum. I know. The screaming guard was hard to ignore."
Jodha gave quiet chuckle. It was beautiful, melodious like Sam's mother's laugh used to be. Sam again ignored the pain at the memory. She focused on Jodha. "How are you, Meera Begum?"
"Sam," She corrected automatically and a bit aggressively. When she saw the startled look on Jodha's face, she sighed. "Meera may have been my birth name here, but Sameera is the name that I have lived by my whole life. And I prefer to be called Sam. Please understand."
Jodha's expression turned into soft and genuine. "I understand. Now are you alright? You took quite a few hits, from the looks of it."
Sam smiled. "Yes. I am fine. It is just a few cuts. It has been treated."
Jodha smiled back. "I hope you get well soon." Then her face tensed. "Do you mind if I talked to Shahenshah for a few moments? Alone."
Sam almost sighed in relief. She did not think she could stand the man anymore for now without murdering him. "Not at all. In fact, I think I will go to my room now. I am tired."
Jodha gave a forced smile. "Of course." She clapped her hands. A dasi came inside. "Take Begum Meer ... Sam to her chambers." Sam smiled at the correction. She nodded at Jodha and left the room following the dasi, not even bothering to look at Shahenshah.
Jodha POV
She watched the new Begum walk away with sadness. Such a young girl. And she would now be subjected to Shahenshah's cruelty. Speaking of Shahenshah, she rounded on Shahenshah with so fierce a glare that he almost took a step back.
"Disperse." She said with authority. All the dasi and the physician bowed and left the room.
"What did you do to her?" She asked turning towards Shahenshah.
"What do you mean?" He said confusedly.
"Do not think to fool me." She hissed. "I saw the tension in her and the relief when I said I wanted to talk to you."
"I have done nothing. You do not need to worry about her. If anything, you should be worried about me." He replied evenly.
Jodha narrowed her eyes. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Shahenshah held his hands up in a gesture of surrender. "Nothing." Then he smirked. "So, you wanted to talk to me, huh?"
Jodha smirked back. "Do not flatter yourself. I am here to talk about your new wife."
Again, Shahenshah looked confused. "What about her?"
Jodha was not one to twist her words. She spoke to the point. "Stay away from her."
"Why?" He smirked. "She is my wife. Whether I stay with her or away from here is my decision. You cannot decide for me nor can you interfere"
Jodha shook her head. "She is also a young girl who has no idea what she has gotten into. She found out about her royalty around a month ago. She does not need you nagging her like you nag me."
"How would you know what she needs?" He smirked and walked a few steps until he was close to Jodha, close enough for her to feel his breath on her face. She took a step back."Or are you jealous of her? Did you develop feelings for me when I was away?"
Jodha scoffed at the notion. Her developing feelings for him? What utter nonsense! "There is nothing as such. She is but a child. She will not be able to handle something like what you did to me on my first night in Agra."
His smirked widened. "And what if I decide to do something? Exercise my rights as her husband?"
The ever existent fire in Jodha's eyes flared to life. How dare he! Had he no respect for women? What was she thinking? Of course, he did not. Her first night in Agra proved as much. "You will do no such thing." She whispered, her voice shaking with righteous fury.
Shahenshah smiled infuriatingly. "Or what?"
Jodha walked two steps and closed in on him. "Or I will make you impotent." She hissed like a dangerous snake.
Shahenshah's eyebrows shot up in surprise. Though at what Jodha did not know. "Oh really? And do you know what punishment you will be subjected to for such heinous crime?"
Jodha almost snorted. Like she cared about punishments. "I am not afraid of your punishments. The life I am living now is worse than any punishment you give me. But Mee ... Sam is too young to to be subjected to your cruelty. I will stand in your way, no matter what."
"Will you now?" He said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jodha replied calmly. "Yes I will. And I will do anything too protect her from you. So, Shahenshah, if you value your manhood, I suggest you do not try anything wrong with your new Begum." And with that, she turned around and left the room without so much as a backward glance.
Jalal POV
Seriously, what was with everyone threatening his manhood today? These Rajvanshi princesses were too much. The spirit in them was hard to break. Hard, not impossible. So they would break one day, and they would be broken by him.
It seemed the Malwa Princess gained herself a protector. Jalal snorted at the thought. As if that girl needed to be protected. She was quite a fierce one all by herself. Jodha thought that his youngest Begum needed protecting. Well, she was in for a surprise.
And then a thought struck him. If these two a befriended each other, they would be united. They would support and help each other. They would protect each other against him. His plan was to bring them here, where they would be alone except a few dasis, making them all the easier to break. Even Maan Singh was not allowed to see Jodha without his permission.
If they were united, they would be each other's rock, which will support them and steady them. If that happened, they would not break. You can hurt your enemy when they are scattered. But victory against united enemies was impossible. If they became friends, he would not be able to hurt them, humiliate them or break them. And that could not happen.
No, he would not allow that to happen. He would let such a puny thing as friendship ruin is well laid plans, his much desired revenge. Jodha and Sameera could not be friends. It was too risky for him if they decided to be good friends with each other. He had to make plans to separate them. If you divide your enemies, they will fall no matter what. And that was what he was going to do. He was going to divide his enemies.
Jalal smirked. He was going to play a move that will ruin their friendship before it could even begin. And then he would beak them, one by one, piece by piece. "Watch your steps, my new Begums. Who knows when you might trip and fall."
So, he left the Physician's chambers with a content smile and walked towards Ruqaiya's chambers, humming a lullaby that Ammijaan used to sing to him when he was little.
