In the recent past, many actors have signed multi-crore multi-film deals, but Salman Khan has gone ahead and created a record of sorts. The enfant terrible of our filmi duniya has just reached an agreement with Ashtavinayaka films: Sallu will make a never-heard-of Rs 24 crore in his next.

These figures are difficult to digest even by Bollywood's latest standards. After this deal, Salman Khan has become the highest paid actor in the industry. Our source explains, "Salman Khan has signed Ashtavinayaka's new film for a whopping amount. While the maximum Shah Rukh has taken is Rs 3.5 crore per film, and the highest Hrithik has gone is a three-film deal with Adlabs for Rs 35 crores, Sallu has managed to walk away with a really meaty deal." If reports are to be believed, Priyadarshan will direct the film.

Salman will, however, not get all the money at one go. It will be divided and will include his remuneration, 30 per cent of the profits that the film makes and money from music and satellite rights. Our source says, "According to the deal, Salman will get Rs 12.5 crore as his remuneration for the film, he will also be the 30 per cent partner in the profits generated (which will come from distributors). Salman will also get a 30 per cent share from the music and satellite rights of the film. The entire amount will be over Rs 24 crore. Not just that, he has also signed an agreement saying that 15 years after the release of the film, Salman will own, free and clear, the negative rights of the film."

While Salman remained unavailable for comment, Parag Desai, the official spokesperson of Ashtavinayaka Films says, "Yes, we have definitely signed Salman for a film but we would not like to disclose our financial agreements. The film will go on the floors in mid- 2008 and the script, and the director is still being finalised."

Relief for Salman in poaching case

JODHPUR: Honouring the Rajasthan High Court's August 31 order, Bollywood actor Salman Khan on Wednesday appeared before the registry of the court in connection with the chinkara poaching case. Salman is expected to stay away from the court's proceedings for the next five to eight years as his case has been referred to judicial backlog, which means it will now be taken up in routine course, his lawyer said.

Salman, who arrived in Jodhpur on Tuesday night, appeared before the deputy registrar of HC on Wednesday morning and marked his attendance by signing on his case file. "The high court will now hear his case in due course and he need not mark his presence before it till his turn comes for hearing," said Salman's lawyer H M Saraswat.

"Once the high court accepts the bail application of an accused he has to be presented and identified by his lawyer in front of judicial officer, so I identified him before the deputy registrar," Saraswat said.

The actor's lawyer said the revision petition against the decision of district and sessions court in Jodhpur upholding the five years' jail sentence by a lower court would now be taken up in due course. Salman was sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the lower court and had been lodged in Jodhpur's central jail in August before he received the bail from the high court.

The case relates to poaching of a chinkara gazelle near Ghoda farm, close to Mathania on the outskirts of Jodhpur on the night of September 28, 1998. Chinkara is a protected animal under the Wildlife Protection Act. Salman later marked his presence before a lower court hearing another case of hunting a blackbuck and a case under the Arms Act against him. The court has fixed November 23 as the next date of hearing in both the cases.

The actor appeared before Jodhpur judicial magistrate Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit in connection with poaching of the blackbuck on the night of September 30, 1998. He also marked his presence in the same court regarding the case of possessing illegal weapons under the Arms Act.

The court was also expected to hear two applications filed by the prosecution. "We approached the court to add one more case against the accused for misleading the court," said Mahipal Bishnoi, a lawyer and representative of Bishnoi community. He said Salman misled the court about his gun licence. The actor, sporting a sky blue full sleeved shirt and jeans, looked calm.
