No, he was playing a regular guy stuck in the boring routine of life. I dunno how to explain it, he just acted sooo bad in the second half. His monologues were so strange.
The way I saw it was that Ved has a split personality. He was mentally disturbed but that disturbance was suppressed somewhere inside of him for a few years because he conformed to whatever society expected of him - living a typical, average life, working a 9 to 5 job after college in a major corporation etc. What triggered that split personality to arise ( it was always there ever since he was a student by the way) was Tara...because Tara saw what Ved was years back in Corsica. The way he expressed himself through role playing with her, because Tara allowed him to freely be whatever he chose to be...yet the Ved she witnessed later in life was completely different. Tara triggered unrest in Ved again. If you noticed the college flashbacks where Ved is trying to study engineering despite telling his father he sucks at maths etc..he had those same rage episodes in his dorm while trying to study because he just couldn't do it but no one cared. And while studying he'd break into expressing himself through dance or so. Basically, the split personality was always there from years back as I mentioned. He was always mentally disturbed while trying to conform himself to society's standards..more so his father's standards. Tara just triggered it again after all those years because she was unfamiliar to such a Ved as she knew him as someone else.
Not to mention, Ranbir wanted to be a storyteller..an artist. Someone who wanted to express themselves through art, words etc. So whatever monologues you'd hear him recite in his time alone, in front of the mirror..were his suppressed emotions. Remember, he knew the art of role playing because he was good at that. He was good at making stories, characters and whatnot. It goes back to how artists express themselves through art, yet Ved couldn't do that in the real world because he wasn't given a chance to. Thus, he did it when he was alone after Tara helped trigger it...but, it got to a point where he started to let it all out...which is when he stopped caring about what others thought and started behaving strangely at work etc. Granted yes, a lot of his expressions were out of the blue and frankly, weird...but once again Ved was good at role playing, being someone who he was not, telling stories etc...and I believe that's what Imtiaz was trying to show...but, yes..Tara brought it all back in the second half...just how she triggered it years back in Corsica when she allowed Ved to be whoever he wanted to be around her. Years later, Ved was just mentally disturbed but suppressed those feelings somewhere...therefore, his angst, frustration etc was all intertwined into his expressions once he let lose.
