The Deeper Meaning of Dard-E-Disco
Javed Akhtar enlightens...

Javed Akhtar's lyrics in 'Om Shanti Om' have come as a bit of a shocker to audiences. But the poet, known for his aesthetic verses, explains that he was actually asked to write dumb lyrics to fit the film's character.

His rhyming scheme in the song featuring Shah Rukh Khan has also taken many aback. The lyrics go like this - 'Dil mein mere hai dard-e-disco....Phirta hoon main New York, Paris, LA, San Francisco...'

Akhtar has a good laugh and says: 'You must understand every song in a film has to go with the given situation and character. The dumbing-down, as you call it, in 'Dard-e-disco' comes from the fact that the guy who sings it is a bit of silly goose ... not exactly intellectually equipped to sprout poetry!'

The lyricist adds: 'In the film-within-a-film in 'Om Shanti Om', it's shown that the hero (played by Shah Rukh) insists that an absurd song be composed for him to sing and dance on stage. While writing lines I had to constantly keep reminding myself that the song wasn't for Shah Rukh but the character that the star plays in a film within the film.

'We had to constantly keep checking my poetry to make sure it didn't sound intelligent. Every time I'd come up with a poetic image I'd be shouted down.'

We have had instances of lyricists trying to sound more poetic than they are capable of being. This is one of those rare occasions when a poet actually had to scale down his skills to accommodate the character's intellect.

Weak in Hindi, child SRK wanted to become a sportsman
Says the new book, SRK: King Khan by Deepa Gahlot.

Heart-throb of many a damsel, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan as a child was weak in Hindi, dreamt of representing the country in international sports events and as a young man had to court his love Gauri for six years before he could win her, says a new book.

Shah Rukh was bright, naughty, fond of sports but was weak in Hindi either scoring very low marks or failing in the subject says the book 'SRK: King Khan' by journalist, critic Deepa Gahlot.

Instead of scolding him, his mother once told him that she would take him to a Hindi movie in a cinema hall if he did well in the subject. The bait was attractive enough for young Shah Rukh and his first visit to cinema must have triggered off the acting impulse in him, says the book. The newly generated interest in Hindi made him understand Hindi films better and gave him a command over the language, a skill that stands him in good stead in his career even today, it says.

In the school he was more interested in sports such as cricket, hockey, football and athletics than in studies and hoped to become a sportsman capable of representing his country in international events.

In Delhi while performing for both television and theatre, Shah Rukh was also wooing the pretty Gauri Chibba, a Hindu girl. Because of the difference in the religion, Gauri's family disapproved of their relationship. The courtship carried on clandestinely for over six years. Gauri was not too pleased about his choice of career or his decision to move to Mumbai but their love overcame all problems, pretty much like it happens in the movies, the book says.

(About the book: SRK, King Khan by Deepa Gahlot, Roli Books, Pages 124, Price Rs. 495).

Shah Rukh – Amitabh starrer Bhootnath delayed
Posted by Hanumant Bhansali

Co-produced by Studio 18 and B R Films, Bhootnath, directed by Vivek Sharma and starring industry's biggest superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan has now been delayed.

The two had actually given the nod to work together as they had only a few scenes together. Big B and SRK hardly share any screen space, except for the climax sequence in the supernatural film.

It is because of the tensions brewing between the two actors that the film is suffering. Things started getting between them during the making of Mohabbatein, that went on till Shah Rukh replaced Amitabh in Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Shah Rukh calls Gauri Angelina Jolie
Posted by Hanumant Bhansali

Shah Rukh Khan is one among the many who feel that his wife Gauri is a style diva.

Says Shah Rukh, "Style is inherent. And Gauri has that." For sometime now, the star couple have been compared to British footballer David Beckham and his wife, Victoria.

Likewise, Shah Rukh finds it amusing. He says, "I thought we were the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of Bollywood."
