Chapter 16

Habeas Corpus

One after the other, possibilities and options were toppling over, losing themselves to absurdity. Arzoo should have called the police when she could. She should have run away when she could. She should have found a way to escape, when Shiraz had left the apartment to buy their tickets to Dubai... She could have somehow wrung the rope free from her hands, ungagged herself, and yelled until one of the neighbours heard her and broke the bathroom door open to free her.

But she was unable to muster the strength. Her body had failed her, once again. As much as she tried to pretend otherwise, she was weak and would always be defeated by Shiraz. He would succeed in taking her to Dubai, and once there, in a foreign land where she knew nobody, it would be even more difficult to escape his clutches. Slowly, steadily, she would begin to give up and she would kill herself, one day, in an act of utter desperation, or worse, live forever in his shadow, as a worthless, soulless thing.

Her helplessness burnt through her parched eyes as sharp, stinging tears - tears that remained suspended under her eyelids, too exhausted to flow. What was the point in crying anyway? This was all her fault. She had been stupid enough to think that once Shiraz's doubts about Sahir had been quelled, she would be able to sneak out of his life and set out for a place so far away that nobody would ever find her again. Shiraz must have foreseen it.

Arzoo forced herself out of her dark, morbid thoughts, as his triumphant face swam before her eyes. She could not allow him to win so easily. She might have been gagged and tied up and defenseless in that moment. But he would have to free her when they went to the airport. An opportunity would surely present itself then. Or in the plane. Or even after they had landed in Dubai. Who was to say that even in a strange, faraway land, help would not be forthcoming?

A small spark of hope was flickering precariously within her. She decided that she would not allow Shiraz to take it away from her, and some day that small spark would kindle into a flame, a raging, all-consuming fire. Maybe it was ridiculous, but that ridiculous hope was all she had. That, and the memories of Sahir. She would find a reason to smile everyday, and as long as she did so, Shiraz's victory would never be complete.

The sudden ringing of the doorbell interrupted Arzoo's thoughts.

Through the bathroom door, she heard the voice of a man speaking to Shiraz. It was a voice she could not recognise.

Then she heard footsteps. Several pairs of footsteps. Perhaps three or four people.

Faint shadows were moving by the crack beneath the bathroom door. They were approaching.

That unknown male voice sounded angry now.

One of the shadows darkened, as Shiraz seemed to have approached the bathroom door.

"She is unwell, please leave her alone," his voice said from the other side of the door.

And then Shiraz swiftly unlocked the door, entered the bathroom and slammed the door behind him.

Panic-stricken, he ran to Arzoo, untied her hands, and removed the piece of cloth stretched over her mouth.

"What's happening?" she croaked.

On the other side of the door, the unknown man was threatening to break in.

Shiraz grabbed a fistful of Arzoo's hair, causing her chin to be jerked upwards, and whispered menacingly, "You keep your mouth shut, you hear me? You know what I am capable of! Don't do anything stupid. Or you will regret it, I can promise you that."

He was sweating profusely, and shaking with anger and fear.

Moments later, the bathroom had been broken into, and a police inspector entered. There were two constables behind him, including a lady constable.

"You cannot hide from the consequences of your actions anymore," the inspector said in a thick Haryanvi accent, "Arzoo Nawsheen Khan, you are under arrest."

"What?" Arzoo spluttered, shocked, "Wha- why?"

"You have been charged with embezzlement and swindling. You must come to the police station immediately for interrogation. Mr Ahmed, please cooperate with the police, or you will be charged with aiding and abetting a criminal."

"This makes no sense," Arzoo protested, as she was handcuffed by the lady constable, "I have done nothing wrong. What evidence do you have?"

But she received no answer. To be fair, she was not particularly vehement in her protests. The opportunity she had been waiting for had presented itself! There had been some kind of misunderstanding, clearly. Fortunately.

She did not have to phone the police, or run away to a police station. They were taking her there themselves. Once she would have convinced the police that she was innocent, she would be able to execute her original plan of running away and forging a new identity somewhere far away, beyond Shiraz's reach. Perhaps the police would help too.

She struggled to hold back her smile, as happiness and gratitude leaked out of her eyes in overflowing abundance, hopefully to be misunderstood by others as fear. Indeed, she was so relieved at the unexpected turn of events, that she could barely find it in herself to question the utter bizarreness of it all.

And once she reached the police station, she understood. It was not a coincidence, that the police had chosen just then to turn up at her doorstep with such an unlikely story. Shiraz, who had followed the police jeep in his car, was still barking at the police officers and being ignored, as she was taken in to the interrogation room... and waiting for her there, was Sahir.

As her eyes met his, Arzoo felt overwhelmed by a surge of emotions tearing across her. She had thought she would never see him again, and yet, there he was, permeating the poignant sense of emptiness within her. She felt sadness too, as she saw that his jaw was taut and his eyelids, as they always did when he was trying not to cry, were fluttering ever so slightly. He had every right to be angry towards her, or distant, at the very least. The way she had shunned him away from her life, must have hurt him deeply.

And then, amidst the blur of the innumerable questions running through her mind, she remembered her reasons for having treated him in the way that she did, and she was gripped by a sense of chilling, paralysing terror. Shiraz was outside, a few metres away. She wanted to be leave, to run away from Sahir, feigning coldness and derision, but her feet, for some reason, were glued to the ground.

Sahir looked past her, at the police inspector, and holding out his hand, he said, "Thank you, Rathod."

The police inspector, Rathod, handed him the keys to her handcuffs and went away, leaving them alone in the room.

Arzoo wished she could throw herself in Sahir's embrace, and melt away into him, into the solace that his mere presence brought to her. But, surely, he was angry. He had to be. If only she could explain herself, answer his questions.

However he did not ask any questions. In fact he did not say anything at all, as he unlocked her handcuffs. He was not even looking at her. She stared helplessly at the top of his head, fighting back tears, trying to be strong. But a tear did fall, from his eyes, onto her wrist. She realised that her wrists still bore the marks of where the rope had scratched and burnt into her skin. He tenderly ran his thumb, cold and soothing, over the bruised skin, and raised his eyes to meet hers.

"I know that you and Shiraz are divorced," he said, his tone reproachful but also heartbreakingly sad, "I met Zaki. He told me."

Questions exploded like fireworks in her mind, but she was unable to voice out any of them. For if she spoke, the quivering dam holding back her tears would burst, and in the deluge of pain that would ensue, she would have no way of protecting Sahir.

But he did not force her to explain herself. As he always had, he simply stood by, patiently, attempting to read through the walls of her cruel silence. His intense gaze seemed to pierce through every pore of hers, as his hands travelled over her arms and came to a rest over her shoulders.

Slow and gentle as a faint evening breeze, he brushed away the curtain of hair covering her neck, allowing his fingers to linger on the back of her neck. She understood from the frown on his face and the pained stiffness in his throat, that her neck probably still bore the imprints of Shiraz's hands.

However Shiraz's attempt to strangle her was a distant, distant memory that was quickly fading away, as every sense in her body, her thoughts, her emotions, her entire sense of being, were invaded by Sahir. She felt an intoxicating tingling sensation in the places where his fingers had grazed her skin. He had angled his head to the other side of her neck, and, inadvertently, perhaps, his lips had moved so close to her lips, that she could feel his warm breaths, breathing life into a dormant part of her.

Both of his thumbs had brushed over her jaw, and in spite of herself, she tilted her face upwards, towards his. It felt like the most natural thing to do, inexorable, preordained, like a sunflower leaning towards the sun. His eyes rose to look at her, intently, and she felt as though she was at the edge of a precipice, a precipice that led her to Sahir. All she wanted to do was to let go, and lose all control over herself, allowing the inevitable to befall her. Her knees were giving way, and she made no effort to pull herself together. All capacity to think had escaped her, and all she knew was how secure and protected she felt in that moment.

And then Sahir stepped back, throwing a surreptitious glance at the glassed wall. It was most probably a one-way glass. "Please sit down," he said, gesturing her towards the chair.

Arzoo suddenly became conscious of where they were, and the reason that had brought her there. Tears rolled down her eyes as she sat down, her entire frame shaking violently. Sahir knew. He would insist on fighting Shiraz, not realising the kind of monstrous depths that man could sink to.

Sahir had pulled a chair and brought it next to hers. He sat down and held her trembling hand in his, comfortingly, as he asked, "Why are you with him?"

She did not reply and stared resolutely at the floor, as tears continued to drop from her eyes. She did not have the energy to lie to him again. And the truth would only complicate matters, because he would not understand her fear of Shiraz, or why she needed to run away, or the fact that Shiraz was so insanely possessive of her, that he would kill Sahir if he felt he had to.

"Arzoo," Sahir said in a broken voice, "When I found that you and Shiraz had been divorced for several months, I realised that he was the one who had hit you, and what I really wanted was to make him pay for what he had done, in the most... gruesome way possible. But I staged this whole thing, only because I needed to know what you want. Nobody has the right to impose their wishes on you, and that includes me. This is your life, and you will make your own choices. And I will always support you no matter what. If you want me to leave, I will. But please, Arzoo, tell me the truth. Your bruises are fresh. Clearly he has not changed. Then why are you with him? Is it family pressure?"

Arzoo looked up at him, overwhelmed with awe. Nobody had cared to ask her what she wanted, not her family, not Shiraz... nobody. She had been wrong about him, once again. If there was anyone who could understand her, it was Sahir.

Wow really nice. Well shiraz is more than a monster or devil. He really tied arzoos hands, can't believe such a man exists. Well regarding arzoo a sweetheart to protect sahir she remained in the company of devil shiraz. Regarding sahir i can only say my respect for this man is really increasing as the ff is really a nice one. Sahir you are one awesome person.
Hema you really should write more ffs or os it would be nice to read it. Sahir it was a nice move on your part to call police because if you had directly confronted him shiraz would have done something bad. You know hema this chapter looked like a scene of a movie but with humsafars cast especially harshad and shivya in it as i could imagine this scene.

Though i know arzoos family treated her badly it would be nice if the misunderstandings are finished between them and of course saaz should marry.

Hema don't end this ff so soon as we really want to see more of saaz. Thankyou for the pm and do update fast.

Thank you, dearest Sona!
Physically, she is free, yes. But it is at the end of the next chapter, that she will begin to truly free herself from the fears embedded within her psyche.
Well, there is not much to reveal on her past that the readers don't already know. (At least I have not planned anything of the sort). But yes, Sahir needs to be told certain things for sure.
Thanks again dear, glad you liked it! 😃

Aw, thank you for the detailed review! Yes, both Sahir and Arzoo are wonderful characters. Credit goes to my muses in the serial of course 😳
I am planning another FF on Humsafars - a more light-hearted one this time - but that will only be next year... Things are going to get super busy soon, so I will completely off IF once I have completed this FF.
That being said, I definitely don't want to wrap up this story too fast, so that it seems rushed and half-baked. So I will really focus on getting the pace right. That is why I have not decided beforehand on the exact number of chapters and have kept some flexibility in that respect.
I will keep in mind what you said about Arzoo's family. Hopefully I can work something out.
And I am so glad that you are able to visualise Harshad and Shivya. The "neck" scene is of course lifted from the serial itself 😛 I figured some elements of the serial need to be incorporated so that it feels like a Saaz FF not just because of the characters' names, but because of that special something that we all associate with Saaz.
Thanks again!

Madhu meri jaan! Thank you for both your comments! I strive to write favourite chapters for you.. hehe. I'm happy that you're happy, and kinda sorta flattered that you are sad 😛
Also, the incorporation of the neck checking scene was completely intentional. I actually went and watched that episode before writing it! Glad you picked on it! (I kind of knew that you would, fervent Saazbaaz that you are.. hehe).
In fact, I have a small confession to make - the only reason why I had Shiraz grab Arzoo by the throat in Chapter 15 (instead of slapping her or something), was so that I could later insert this scene as a sort of tribute to the scene from the serial. Yeah, I know, that was kind of cruel 😆

Thank you!
