A very simple review on chapter 10 as promised...😊 like you said better late then never so here it is ...

A symbolic journey that started between two lost souls... A man and a woman whom have been hurts by the ones they loved the most ...A betrayel that they have not been able to forget, the physical scars may have healed or even concealed but the heart break suffered may not...
The journey has beautifully progressed in each of your chapters may that have been of a spiritual nature or even mentally or academically... The message has been simple... which I have interpreted to be 'friendship' there bonding so far has been slow and steady and seeing the barriers break from each side has been nice to read... Hema you have truly stuck to the core of your story and for that I cannot praise you enough...Each chapter like the last has deep meaning meanings or even motives that captivates both the mind and heart of the reader... just like chapter 10 did...

unlike the last chapter we see that the focus has shifted on arzoo healing and bonding with sahir... I loved the title that you gave this chapter of "modus oparandi" meaning a way of operating or a way of doing something particular... what a sweet title to give...After sahir intimate moment with arzoo in the last chapter it was a nice way to introduce her way of thinking... It like your title suggest it's self sometimes words speak louder then the actions it self and in this case they did...

I loved the way arzoo reflected on that previous in counter with sahir and drew the strength to move forward in life ... I see that she found it symbolic that he let her wear his lawyers gown which means the world to him... It not only showed her how much he believed in her but also how much he trust her... I believe that this was his way of operating the message to arzoo that she should believe in herself like others around her do... like you said he is a man of academics and reasons only with what he perceives to be correct and in this scenario when arzoo was down he knew that she needed his support... He was her pillar of strength after the storm of the devil she has had to deal with... her guardian angel... A big round of applause for spreading this message...

Looking back at the chapter it self it was both romantic and sweet that arzoo wished to be held again by sahir...to be in his arms and in his embrace...It was so sweet and soothing to know that she felt her heart flutter with hope...After all it felt like she believed she finally found peace or could believe in coming home to someone even if they are just her friend...its nice to see that she relaxed and let her guard down to be his friend and that she also treasures there time together looks like she will realise soon that they have more in commen then she thinks...

Although it was moving to see arzoo healing and feeling happy it was also sad to see sahir break in front of arzoo... I was just enjoying the light banter between the two and I loved re way that he started to take life lessons from arzoo and putting them into action... I loved the way that sahir softened towards the office staff and that the office people believed he was in love...This whole arzoo sahir exchange made me chuckle...

Oh but it was not to last as that's when sahir gets the call he had always in the back of his mind dreaded or even prayed for it to not happen... the call informing him about his ammi...

The whole scene was moving and yet I could see that as sahir had operated around arzoo by giving her his gown; arzoo knew that being his friend was what he needed... He needed her shoulder of support... her understanding...I loved the way she cried for him and stood there in silence with out even asking any questions ...you could see that they were made for each other...It was like two broken hearts were uniting to cry... to cry for time lost or even an opportunity missed... It was like arzoo was being the woman giving him the love that he always secretly craved for...

The chapter left me wondering how would sahir react when he met his ammi and what would arzoo do to help sahir pick up the pieces... just as I believed that the mysteries were ending they only seemed up be getting bigger ... how sad to read indeed ...

Thanks for the moving chapter as always...but this time I cannot way happy writing all I can say it's going to be a tough act to complete...

Part two...unlike the last chapter we knew this time what was coming...like the title suggest "ammi" a word that can be defined in many different ways...
But in my point of view its "a person whom gives us life, molds our hand to guide us and shows us what we can achieve..."

"A person whom gives us hope to achieve the best we can...A person that makes us whom we are destined to be"...

But the most rewarding thing that she brings us is her love as this is shared without any conditions or restrictions it received free from any human judgement...

Ammi I can say is another form of receiving love with no boundaries attached ...

This chapter was hard to write about but at the same time gave us the most important live lesson we needed to hear which was "live life with love...don't be afraid to embrace it and don't let the pain of the past reflect the happiness that the future could possible bring..."...

"A live should be lived with a companion a soul mate a person whom we can call our own. .."...

I loved the way you communicated the above by sahir and his ammi and even though she was ill she was still able to hide him...It showed that she always loved him and that she was even worried for him today ...

It was nice to read how even though sahir knew that her time was up he believe she would be okay... They shared a sort moment but in that moment she managed to give him the most important life lesson of all which is to love and be loved just like she did... I only hope that he understood what she said...

It was sad to read and image sahir being that funrable child again and having to go through all that pain. ...but it was nice to see that he forgave her and the man that she married...I knew arzoo present was small on this chapter but her being there must have been enough for sahir as he knew that he was not alone...

It was really hard to see sahir being that scared boy again and it proved that no matter how much you pretend or how grown up you are you still need your ammi... just like sahir did at the specific point...

All I really want to know is known how will arzoo help sahir deal with this pain...also did he get what his ammi meant by he needs a humsafer... hope he did...

Hopefully hema the next chapter will make us cry leas. ..but like I always say happy writing... and a beautiful chapter as always...

Aw, thank you for the kind words! Much appreciated. I'm glad you feel that I have been consistent - it is hard to keep track sometimes. And yes you are quite right, friendship is at the core of it all, and will always be.

unlike the last chapter we see that the focus has shifted on arzoo healing and bonding with sahir...

I only intended the title to refer to the modus operandi that Arzoo charted out for herself, but you brought in a lovely additional layer there (as you often do). Love it, absolutely!

Haha, and you did it once again! When I wrote the lawyer's gown scene, I saw it pretty much only as a way of Sahir conveying the idea that he believed in her, and infusing some confidence in her. But you are so very right - it is also an act that demonstrates a great deal of trust. That gown means everything to him, and to allow her to wear it symbolises the place that he has given her in his life. You really do make the story much, much better than I originally intended, which is just so awesome! 😃

Hehe.. you have clearly anticipated parts of the chapter 12 😉

Ah, office gossip! Tell me about it! 😆 The rumour mills are always spinning the most farfetched of yarns - altho in this case, they were quite right 😉

Very true, she has been sort of motherly - and will be especially so in chapter 12, as you will see. Which is where the element of fear also comes in, because he has come to understand that such love can be snatched away from him at any time. But that also means that he does not take Arzoo's care for granted and tries to convey his appreciation whenever he can - which makes for some sweet moments here and there 😳

Oh yes, happy writing is not the order of the day. There are quite some heavy dramatic moments in store for you guys, which I feel are necessary for the story... but things will get better, as they always do!

Beautiful! I usually take some time to think up my chapter titles, digging through latin legalese from my memory and good old trusty google, but I knew before I had even started to write, that there could be no other title for chapter 11 than purely and simply "Ammi." I'm glad it conveyed the emotions that I had in mind.

This chapter was hard to write about but at the same time gave us the most important live lesson we needed to hear which was "live life with love...don't be afraid to embrace it and don't let the pain of the past reflect the happiness that the future could possible bring..."...

"A live should be lived with a companion a soul mate a person whom we can call our own. .."...

Very true. What Sahir's mother did may have been seen as selfish, but in truth, there should be no guilt attached to seeking out one's own happiness and following one's heart. Everyone has the right to be happy and they should embrace it.

I loved the way you communicated the above by sahir and his ammi and even though she was ill she was still able to hide him...It showed that she always loved him and that she was even worried for him today ...

Mothers! 😳

It was nice to read how even though sahir knew that her time was up he believe she would be okay... They shared a sort moment but in that moment she managed to give him the most important life lesson of all which is to love and be loved just like she did... I only hope that he understood what she said...

I think he did 😃 altho his fears may still be kind of in the way.

It was sad to read and image sahir being that funrable child again and having to go through all that pain. ...but it was nice to see that he forgave her and the man that she married...I knew arzoo present was small on this chapter but her being there must have been enough for sahir as he knew that he was not alone...

Well said... her presence definitely had its importance!

It was really hard to see sahir being that scared boy again and it proved that no matter how much you pretend or how grown up you are you still need your ammi... just like sahir did at the specific point...

👏 Very, very true.

All I really want to know is known how will arzoo help sahir deal with this pain...also did he get what his ammi meant by he needs a humsafer... hope he did...

Hopefully hema the next chapter will make us cry leas. ..but like I always say happy writing... and a beautiful chapter as always...

Haha, I cannot promise less tears, because we are nearing the climax, so some drama is due 😛

But thanks so much for sticking around and always being so supportive and encouraging! If it were not for you and the others, the story would definitely not be on its 12th chapter. The FF is yours as much as it is mine, so thank you for giving me the opportunity to write on...

Chapter 12

A fortiori

Arzoo would have gladly given up everything that she had, every hope of happiness, every promise of fulfilled prayers, every shred of peace... if it could lessen Sahir's suffering in any way.

She had lived through a fair share of trials and tribulations in her short life. She had seen the ugly, twisted face that love could take on, she had experienced that crushing disappointment when her own family had failed to stand up for her, and within a year, she had been stripped of her loved ones, of her faith in love, of her self-esteem and dignity, and everything that had previously made her who she was. She had come dangerously close to giving up entirely and allowing herself to crumble at the hands of what she had grown to accept as her fate.

But it had all been her pain, hers to combat or succumb to. To see what she saw in Sahir's eyes when he realised that his mother had passed away, filled her with a most agonising sense of helplessness. The choice was not in her hands, it was his to make. And as he allowed himself to drown deeper and deeper into the abyss, she felt increasingly distanced from him, unbearably so.

Yet, at the same time, his pain seemed to mirror hers, so poignantly, that the tears that flowed from his eyes were her own. He, was her own, she realised, in a way that nobody had ever been. And she would bring him back from the edge of that precipice she knew too well. They were not so different after all. She had learnt from Pervez Qureshi of the amount of pain Sahir had kept suppressed within him for so many years and decided that whether or not she managed to find her own happiness, she would fight to bring back his. She would fight as though her life was at stake, because strangely enough, she felt that it was.

Truth be told, she was terrified at the idea that she may have fallen in love with him, but whatever it was that she felt for him - that fierce sense of protectiveness and excruciating yearning - overpowered everything else.

Perhaps that was why she had not even spared a moment of hesitation before offering to stay back at his apartment. It had been quite understandable for her to have offered to drive him from the hospital to his apartment, given the state that he was in. But as she was preparing to hail a rickshaw for herself, she had turned back to look at him, and had realised that she could not bear to leave him alone.

"I'll manage," he had muttered, when she had asked him if he had something to eat.

"I can make you something," she had offered.

He had taken some time before he protested, insisting that he did not need anything, but the despondent look in his eyes had said it all. So she had thrown in the "that's what friends are for" argument, and he had shrugged in agreement, his expression as vacant, as lifeless as ever. As agonising as it was to see him in tears, Arzoo found herself wishing that he would cry again, or rage and shout, or even just talk - anything that could return some specks of light to those defeated eyes. And if he would not, she wished that she could cry away all his grief for him.

The microwave beeped. The rice was ready.

She smiled briefly at the memory of the day when he had brought her food at the hotel, and at the same time, remembered how she had shouted at him. Maybe it had upset him too, to see her in that state. Maybe he did not show it, but it bothered him that while she was privy to his most intimate moments, she remained as guarded as ever, adamant that he could not be trusted. And yet, he never insisted, he never made any demands, he let her be, respecting her for who she was. She knew deep in her heart, that she could not have been more wrong to think that he was like the others.

In fact, she had begrudged him his inexplicable inclination to judge and dislike her without getting to know her. But hadn't she done the same? For how could a person who was able to forgive the mother who had abandoned him... who mourned her passing with such sincerity and purity, be in any way comparable to the men that she had known? How could that man who sat hunched at the side of his bed, be in any way deserving of her distrust?

"Sahir?" she said, tentatively.

He looked up and attempted a feeble smile when he caught sight of the plate in her hands, "Arzoo, I don't think I can eat."

"You haven't had lunch either. Have something at least. Or do you want biscuits? Coffee?"

"I'm fine, really. You can cover the plate and keep it in the microwave. I will have it later. It is getting late, your family will be getting worried about you."

"My family," she echoed, struck once again by how little he knew about her. But then, this was hardly the time. She assumed an offhand air as she said, "My family is in Lucknow. I live alone."

Her mind travelled to what they would have had to say about her being in the company of a man in his apartment after dark. They would never understand that she was safer with this man who was unrelated to her, than with the monster she had been married to. And how would they understand what Sahir meant to her, when in their eyes, she had never been a person with a right to emotions and dreams of her own? She had only ever been a carrier of the family's honour and good name, of their traditions and beliefs. Even seeing the bruises on her face could not have moved them enough, to understand that their insistence on being dictated by what people would say, was killing her, day by day. A dead daughter was preferable to a defiant one, any day.

"You haven't eaten either, have you?" he said, interrupting her thoughts, his eyes piercing into hers, with that intensity that somehow always seemed to render her breathless.

"We will eat together," she replied, softly, but firmly.

His eyes misted with a fleeting memory, and he averted his gaze away from her, towards the floor once again. Soon drops of tears began to fall heavily from his eyes. She set the plate on his bedside table and sitting next to him on the bed, she placed her arms around his quaking frame. His sobs subsided after some time, and resting his head on her shoulder, he said, "Ammi used to say that no matter how sad or angry we are, food always comes first."

"I agree," Arzoo smiled through her tears.

"I was very hurt when Ammi left, even though I knew how unhappy she had been. My father never loved her. He could never appreciate her qualities, or anyone's for that matter. His language was... has always been one of taunts and ridicule. He crushed her self-confidence every single day, and treated her like a servant. After she left, he did not even seem remotely affected. Within two weeks, another woman had taken her place in the house. They had been together for years. I knew everything, I understood it all... But I still hated her for leaving. And even when I managed to come to terms with it all, I never tried to find her. Maybe... if I had, we would have had more time together. But instead, I chose to escape all the memories. I kept running... If only I had at least tried to look for her..."

"You would have tortured yourself, perhaps to no avail" Arzoo replied, "And maybe, you would not have become the accomplished lawyer whom she was so proud of... You did not have much time together, but you were destined to meet, and you did."

Sahir lifted his head to look at her, and said, "I'm glad you are here with me."

His face was so close hers, that she could feel his warm, minty breath on her lips. She could smell his aftershave, almost taste the saltiness of his tears. It was a strange intoxicating feeling, that made her feel light-headed and suddenly, entirely at peace with herself and the world. She wanted to turn her eyes away from his, but found that somehow, she could not. She could barely even bring herself to think. All that she could do was feel... the pounding of her heart, or possibly his.

It was with some difficulty that she inched away, and in doing so, perhaps nudged him into consciousness as well.

"So, what's for dinner?" he asked.

"Rice, moong dal and potatoes," she announced, feigning nonchalance too.

"You are spoiling me. If I get used to you being around, what will I do when you leave?"

He had spoken in jest at first - because the meal that she had whipped up, was pretty much all she could manage with the available ingredients and her deplorable lack of cooking skills, but his question was a disguised plea, undoubtedly sincere, tinged with yearning and a palpable sense of fear. She wanted to reply and reassure him that she would not leave him. She wanted to tell him how she felt. But she had never learnt to express such emotions, and the words she began to formulate in her mind sounded awkward and woefully inadequate, like mere platitudes.

But she would tell him one day. She knew now, for sure, that if he was the candle flame to her moth, she would willingly allow herself to burn, again, and again, and again.

Yayy! Awesome to see the update:)

And again, what a poignant chapter. Till now, Arzoo and Sahir seemed to have been taking their journey inch by inch towards the inevitable, but it seems like the tragedy brought them closer than they could have ever imagined.

Arzoo in particular seems to have become accustomed to the idea that Sahir is markedly different from the men she has known, particularly her abusive husband, and her father who probably abandoned her in her time of need. This acknowledgement, coupled with the wilful surrender that she asserted at the end of the chapter, "moth to a flame" added all the more to the intensity.

As for Sahir, the thought that he can depend on another's presence for happiness and serenity seems to please him as well as strike him with some dread. Hope he can reconcile himself to it soon, just as Arzoo did.

Well done, and take your time for the next one! We will be waiting to see how their journey proceeds here on. Hasta la Vista;)

An important chapter in sahir and arzoos life as there is a new form of closeness in their relationship. Sahir is definitely different from other men specially her abusive husband. The fact that arzoo acknowledges that she might have fallen in love with sahir is a stepping stone. The way sahir says what would I do once u leave me is so true. Nice update once again though little bit sadness but i guess this is what life is. A true friend is not someone who is there just in times of happiness but is there in times of sadness as well and a friend in need is a friend indeed. It is as though they are humsafars. Well thankyou for the pm and do update fast and pm me.
