Gabbar is back, and it isn't good news.

Yes, let us not mince words. This Gabbar is a damp squib. Not only does he lack the pull and power of Hindi cinema's most memorable baddie, even the half-baked homilies that this holier-than-thou terminator of the corrupt mouths reeks of staleness.

But what did you expect from a film that, for its title, had to fall back on a household name from one of Hindi cinema's biggest hits, made all of 40 years ago?

Every bit of the Gabbar Is Back screenplay reflects the same spirit of lowbrow lethargy. The film marks a return to the bad habits of a past that much of Hindi cinema appears to have left behind for good.

Akshay Kumar is in virtually every single frame of the film, but no amount of the weight that he throws behind the trite narrative can yank it away from its mediocre moorings.

Gabbar Is Back, director Krish's first shot at a Hindi production, is a remake of a 2002 Tamil film made by AR Murugadoss, to whom the story is duly credited.

Despite the many tweaks that have been effected for the purpose of turning the tale pan-Indian - for one, the film is set in Maharashtra - and the unblemished cinematography by Nirav Shah, Gabbar Is Back simply cannot shrug off its dated feel.

To make matters worse, the characters are mechanically conceived and sketchily etched.

They merely go through the motions. None, not even the invincible hero, is allowed to spring out of the screen and rise above the patchiness of the final product.

The film has five principal characters - the crusading protagonist Aditya/Gabbar (Akshay Kumar), a lawyer's assistant and the hero's romantic interest Shruti (Shruti Haasan), a lowly but ambitious constable Sadhuram (Sunil Grover), a swaggering CBI officer Kuldeep Pahwa (Jaideep Ahlawat) and a villainous real estate tycoon Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar).

Neither of them leaves any clear impression. But the fault does not lie with the actors playing the parts. They do their very best.

The motivations of the characters are inchoate, their actions seem arbitrary, and the screenplay provides no worthwhile insight into why they are what they are.

The hero's disillusionment with the system stems from a tragic personal experience revealed in a flashback featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan in a special appearance.

It is, however, difficult to fathom whether Gabbar's subsequent actions are a result of all-consuming anger or overpowering grief, so stoical and stone-faced is the protagonist.

Aditya is a college professor, but he does everything other than teach. Pretty much the same is true of Shruti Haasan's character. She is a lawyer whose life depends on stray pieces of information culled from Google.

We do not for once see the lady in a courtroom or in any other professional setting that might indicate what she does for a living. She floats in and out of the film without much apparent logic.

The only time she does something notable, the act has nothing to do with law - she plays midwife to a pregnant woman on the backseat of a car.

Gabbar Is Back is crammed from end to end with crushing clichs about corruption and its ugly ramifications.

The system, the hero intones, is like a baby's diaper - thoda geeli, thoda dheeli (a little soggy, a little loose).

So he goes about fixing the leaks by kidnapping dishonest bureaucrats and summarily executing them.

The man has a fetish for lampposts. He uses them to hang the bribe-taking officials, with their files tied around their lifeless bodies.

The cops are at their wit's end despite spending days and nights in confabulations over samosas and red chutney.

Gabbar Is Back flits from one issue to another without settling on any one of them.

It touches upon the shenanigans of a swanky hospital, the woes of water-starved farmers, the depredations of the real estate mafia and, of course, the widespread malfeasance in the police force and the bureaucracy.

The film reminds the audience repeatedly that the protagonist is a villain only by name. By disposition, he is a hero committed to ridding the nation of corruption.

His means may be questionable, his mission isn't. So the audience is supposed to egg him on.

Unfortunately, quite apart from the disturbing fact that the film glorifies a dangerous brand of mobocracy, it delivers nothing at all that can arouse genuine excitement and empathy.

The hero of Gabbar Is Back teaches physics in an institution that is famously out of bounds for both law enforcers and law-breakers.

Aditya's students, present and past, constitute his army, and they whisk away tehsildars, district collectors and senior cops with the utmost ease.

The only 'combat' training that they need hinges on the five fundamental loads of physics: tension, compression, shear, bending and torsion.

A bunch of goons breaks into the campus and Aditya alias Gabbar, in the midst of an open-air lecture, grabs the opportunity to give his impressed pupils a live demo on how to put these physical forces to best use.

Clearly, nobody put the makers of this film through the paces. They might have then known how to make the best of their limited cinematic resources and craft something less mucky.

Watch Gabbar Is Back only if you are a diehard Akshay Kumar fan.

Director Krish brings the iconic screen name Gabbar back in theatres along with the immortal dialogues for his hindi film debut. But this Gabbar played by Akshay Kumar has no similarities with Amjad Khan's character in Sholay. Perhaps there is one! Akshay's character shows the same desperation to wipe out corruption from the country that Gabbar had when going after Jai and Veeru.

The film begins with Gabbar scanning all corrupt tehsildars whom he proceeds to punish cruelly by hanging them in the middle of the city. Numerous such incidents lead to utter chaos leaving the police department shaken up in embarrassment.

Does the mastermind of Gabbar keep you on the edge of the seat? Yes, it definitely does till the first half. The hospital sequence, a well thought out idea, brings to light the corrupt medical practice in the country. But poor dialogues at key junctions; exuberance and over the top drama seen in films down South bring the movie crashing down. After a time you ask yourself, why are they making me dislike the film when I have been enjoying it all this while?'

Shruti Haasan is good in bits and with a limited scope to perform she leaves no impact on screen. Bad screenplay can make any actress appear average. Shruti unfortunately is a victim of this. On the other side of fence fighting Gabbar is Suman Talwar. He has a prominent screen presence, has a strong reason to go after Gabbar. What is that reason? We will leave that for you to find out in the theatres.

The one actor who you least expect to pull off the role of a cop is Sunil Grover. His TV character Gutthi is so popular but not even in a single frame it reminds you of that. He holds your attention and you really sympathize with the apathy he goes through in the department. The senior police officers cast in these roles do a convincing job.

Krish's attempt to remake Tamil film Ramana may not be liked by the Hindi speaking audience. His treatment of the film, though fast paced, lacks connect which he could have easily had with a massy star like Akshay Kumar.

Akshay Kumar has put sincere efforts in every department be it intense or romantic scenes. But all the elements of screenplay, editing, and storyline put together doesn't really help to drive the point back home. The climax of the film is a yawn and doesn't move you at all.

Corruption is a subject that has been done and dusted with, in Bollywood. Every now and then, a number of films keep popping up with the same subject, so it was no surprise for us when the maker of Gabbar Is Back announced this project, a remake of Tamil flick, Ramana starring Vijaykanth.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Grover, Shruti Haasan, Suman Talwar and Jaideep Ahlawat; Director: Krish; A.P.J Abdul Kalam said and I quote, "If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher." Gabbar Is Back featuring Akshay Kumar does what the fathers, mothers and teachers have been failing to do. Plot: This film is about a common man, a self appointed vigilante who is out to abolish corruption altogether from society.

He does n't believe in forgiving or second chances, he wants to solve the problem of corruption by punishing the offenders with death. This leads to a lot of bribe taking collectors and other offenders being found dead, hanging on trees, hoardings etc.

Performances: Akshay plays the role of the self claimed law enforcer who means business and is by far the best actor who could have essayed this character on screen. On watching the film, you shall realize that no other Bollywood actor would have been right for this role and that it was specially scripted and drafted for our Khiladi Kumar.

His understated demeanor delivers massy lines that have the power to sway people with such ease and conviction that you feel like sitting up and paying attention to this man who is standing on a car, giving an arousing speech on youth power, all without raising his voice. Shruti Haasan is seen playing the role of a lawyer who is busy drinking coffee and romancing Akshay than fighting cases, while Kareena Kapoor looks breathtaking in the movie and nothing more. Box Office Predictions: Gabbar Is Back To Beat Furious 7 & Avengers Record?

Positives:

Rajat Arora's dialogues, it truly proves how pen is mightier than the sword. His dialogues had more power than the action in the film. Krish's direction, for a change he decided to make a movie that puts across a movie with the subtlety of the corruption theme. Not overdoing it but still giving it a massy appeal is what scored for Gabbar Is Back. Sunil Grover, you famously know as Gutti in Comedy Nights With Kapil show has essayed his role of asphyxiated voice of nation with conviction.

Negatives:

Sandeep Chowta's background score gets a little disturbing. Villains in the film lack authenticity, they are the same old boring characters who project the typical corrupt people we have been seeing in decade old films.

Gabbar Is Back movie has been conceptualized and made pretty darn well. It may get loud, it may get too flamboyant for it to seem believable but in a country like ours, you can never convey any sensible thing by being subtle.

You want people to listen to you, then you ought to be loud! Akshay's brooding character is what will remain in mind when you are walking out of the theater! There is something magical and serene in him that just knocks you off your feet. Our country needs a hero like this! If Narendra Modi is on the lookout for a sidekick then Akshay is the man! Verdict: In spite of being a remake movie, Gabbar Is Back is the best version ever made.

Watch it for Akshay and watch it because it is an entertaining movie that will kick the boredom out of you like how Akshay kicks his villains.

What's Good: Gabbar Is Back actually lives up to the line Naam Se Villain, Kaam Se Hero' and manages to give a new angle to the most dreaded villain Gabbar. The film is a complete entertainer filled with punchlines, action and an absolutely hot Akshay Kumar.

What's Bad: It is a mindless entertainer and hence you have to let go the loop-holed story. Also, being a official remake of the Tamil filmRamanaa and coming from a director from down South, the film making is completely southern and you may need to shut your ears if the background sound goes all harsh.

Loo break: Yeah! One won't harm.

Watch or Not?: Gabbar Is Back is a typical massy commercial film which thrives on its lead star Akshay Kumar. The story is highly predictable but if you are a fan of films that have dialogues like Sher Ka Shikaar Karna Ho Toh Bakri Ko Aankhon Ke Saamne Rakhna Padta Hai' then this one is your sure shot weekend watch.

Aditya (Akshay Kumar) is an extremely righteous professor who dreams of creating awareness among the youth and making them doers' instead of being watchers' to the rotten system of corruption. He is a professor at National College, which seems more like a hypothetical college where no police can enter. Aditya along with a team of his students who have now branched out of college and are placed in various government organizations chalks out a plan to erase the top-most corrupt officials. Calling himself as Gabbar, Aditya kidnaps Tehsildars, Collectors, PWD official and even a police official and kills them. Of course, no man with a clean past would voluntarily take up such a cause of teaching the society a lesson hence we learn about Aditya's past.

Been married to Kareena Kapoor's character, five years back Aditya is all set to start his family when in an unexpected mishap of a building collapse, he loses his pregnant wife. Naturally, agitated by this, after digging up information on the building collapse, Aditya gathers evidence against Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar), who is the builder. While Patil almost kills Aditya, he is miraculously saved by some medical students who find his body lying in front of their bus. The new lease of life that he gets is to make sure that he teaches not only Digvijay but the other corrupt officials a lesson.

On the other side Sadhu (Sunil Grover) is an honest constable who in spite of his wit is always a butt of jokes amongst his seniors. It is Kuldeep Pahwa (Jaideep Ahlawat) who comes as the special officer who finally recognizes Sadhu for his work.

And well, in the end Gabbar is successful in creating the desired revolution amongst the youth.

Gabbar Is Back is had a very good start at some places and was decent in other places. Overall the opening was good at around 40-45 %. It is the best opening for a Hindi film this year but that is not saying much as hardly any films have opened. The occupancies are less than Fast & Furious 7 and The Avengers - Age Of Ultron but has more screens than those films.

It is the best start for an Akshay Kumar starrers in a long time. Much better than films like Entertainment, Baby and Holiday though the last named film picked up rapidly from late afternoon.

The opening was best in Rajasthan, CI and UP while the big multiplexes in metros have just average start. The film has released on a holiday which is why the opening is good but on a holiday the opening should be excellent or bumper. The first day number will be good for Gabbar Is Back but the opening morning numbers don't suggest a 15 crore nett plus number which was the requirement for the film due to holiday for May Day.
