That's why we see shades of the actual Damon when he is with Bonnie because he doesnt try to be someone he is not. He doesn't lie or try to act infront of Bonnie because she sees right through it and calls him out on it.
Elena on the other hands, she places a WHOLE lot of expectations on him. He tries too hard to change himself or be someone she wants him to be, not because he wants it but because she wants him to this good vampire. But it never worked because Damon at the end of the point has done a lot of bad and will still do it if pushed, He can't erase the past nor change his natural instincts.
In the end, They had to turn Elena into a vampire and become quite amoral herself to finally start hooking up with Damon. As Kai said during the rescue bonnie frm 1994 mission (That was one hilarious episode)- He is Elena in reverse 😆
Bonnie on the other hand, She doesn't expect anything from him like you said. A good example is the episode where she finds out he killed a pregnant woman. And later realizes his constant pan cake making is a way to remind himself of the horrible crime he committed that day. Even though she says there may still be hope for him, she doesnt suddenly start expecting him to become a saint. She doesn't imply having any expectations from him but merely states that he is different from Kai in that manner.
It wasn't to make herself feel better. It was merely to show him that he feels guilt which means he is a little human on the inside despite how much he denies it. It was a hint that he can be different and more better but if he wishes to be.

Yes , they'd to introduce a sire bond n kill off compassionate human Elena to introduce this extremely shallow character full of selfishness n no moral ground whatsoever , to pair her with D, n guess what even then DE doesn't make any sense. 😆
Like , Damon has this inherent fear of rejection deeply embedded in his psych , which is a result of parental rejection of him by his own father n Stefan always being preferred child . Damon remained stuck some where bitter by that rejection , n always waited for the universe to accept him n choose him over Stefan . That's why it was so important for him to get "Stefan's girl" , whether it's Katherine or Elena. He wanted recognition n acceptance for what he is , n not for what he could be. It was important for him to be chosen over his brother at least once in his life.
When he got acceptance from Elena , that Elena was not the human Elena Stefan fell for , it was completely another girl , who's lost her moral compass in the process of turning into a vampire , so it didn't help Damon any to become a better version of himself , because like we discussed , it's just soo difficult to change a person after he'd been around doing nasty shits for as long as Damon has been . The process of change have to be really spontaneous n organic n most importantly , by some one who's really inspiring by herself , n not by what she preaches. There was no moral ground on which E could herself stand n ask Damon to join her up there . She just descended down to the worst level of Damon Salvatore . S5 showed us why DE should never have become a thing , let alone considered as endgame . There were so many points at so many levels that showed how toxic , abusive , n plain wrong they're for each other that by the time season 6 begun , this couple were over their expiry date. If we start discussing only s4-s5 events that indicates how neither DE can make each other truly happy nor can they work as a real couple , it'll be the size of a huge oxford dictionary , if printed 😆.
I mean come on , could you even remember DE ever doing real cute couple-y things like watching TV together , doing to movie night , going for a simple date , walk in the park holding hands . With them , it's lust so thick n mind fogging that for both D n E it's difficult to find their way out of it. 😆 They converted them into these carnal creatures of fang n bang n the show effectively got reduced to a cheap soap opera. 😆 😆
I think a big reason why D always goes crawling back to E , becoz it's safe n she's easy. He knows he can do horrible things n E won't even bat an eyelash , or may even join him. After all , she turned into a druggee human killer to hallucinate about Damon . She has no problem at all turning herself into a monster . And that's just ONE of the many examples of how shitty Elene Gilnor had been for the entire season six. Especially when it comes to her friends , who were like sisters to her .. Bonnie who ?? Caroline Who ?? 😆
