UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 21
An original story by Archana Vinod
Siddhant stares at the man, perplexed. Who could it be? And how does he know my name?
"Siddhant Bharadwaj?" he asks in disbelief, "you must be Siddhant Bharadwaj, am I right? Rajendar's son?"
"Yes sir," he replies, "do you know my father?"
"Dear Lord!" he cries out in amazement, "very well! I do! What a pleasant surprise!"
Siddhant is confused and even more nervous.
"Don't you remember me, son?" asks the man, "I'm Anand! Anand Thackeray! Remember?"
Siddhant doesn't seem to recollect at first, but then, a smile creeps up on his face, a smile of recognition.
"A-Anand uncle?" he asks doubtfully.
"Aye Sabaash!" the man slaps Siddhant on the arm proudly, "so you finally remembered eh?"
"Yeah," smiles Siddhant, "sorry, I didn't recognize you. You look so different now... you've gone all bald and grey..."
"Of course my boy!" he booms in excitement, "I'm growing old, what do you expect? But look at you! You've become so tall and huge! You look even more dashing than your father!"
Siddhant blushes at his compliments. "Thanks uncle," he replies shyly.
"It's in your blood," he compliments further, "your father is so glamorous even at this age, so I can only imagine!!"
"Thank you uncle," replies Siddhant. He feels more awkward now.
"When's the last time I saw you?" begins Anand, "you were so small then, probably 8 or 9. After which your Papa and all went to the US! Haven't seen you since then."
"Yeah," replies Siddhant, "I wasn't around."
Siddhant feels much relaxed now! This guy's family!
"I came across your pics on Rajendar's Facebook profile recently," he says, "that's how I recognized you here. Your Papa, seriously! This guy even thinks young, no wonder!"
Siddhant just laughs.
MEANWHILE IN ATUL'S CABIN
Roli struggles to look into Atul's dazzling eyes. It gives her the chills.
"W-what?" she stutters, "why're you looking at me like that?"
"Just like that," he smiles, "okay! Give me a minute!"
He walks back to his desk, takes out a plastic bag and hands it over to Roli.
"What's this?" she asks.
"Just open it," he replies.
She is uncomfortable as she pulls out the contents of the plastic bag. A gorgeous green saree!
"Oh my!" she gasps.
"Got it from Surat last night," he says, "like it?"
"What do you mean?" she looks up, "is this for me?"
"No," he answers, "for your mom."
"Oh," Roli's excitement seems to fade away, "well... I..."
Atul bursts out laughing. "Just pulling your leg girl," he laughs, "of course it's for you!"
"It's beautiful," she blushes with a smile, "thank you so much."
"All our old mates are meeting up at the Crowne Plaza tonight," he tells her, "a small get together."
"You mean from college?" Roli is excited.
"Obviously," he replies.
"Wow!" she gasps, "this is news! After a long time!"
"I want you to come in this," he tells her suddenly.
"What?" she is stunned.
"Some of my friends will be there too," he says, "I want you to meet them."
Roli feels odd about the whole thing, something's not right, at the same time she is eager to go. It's a sign that Atul is getting serious. Really serious!
"Erm... I..." she doesn't know what to say.
"Don't say no," he replies.
Roli seems to be thoughtful. "Fine," she finally replies.
OUTSIDE ATUL'S CABIN
Roli steps out of Atul's cabin and finds Siddhant chatting away to glory with Anand. However, they don't notice her yet.
"So what do you do here?" asks Siddhant. He's not nervous at all now.
"I'm the Chief Operating Officer," he replies, "since 2009."
"Way cool," says Siddhant in appreciation.
"Ok son," begins Anand, "I got to rush. Got a meeting... let's meet up for dinner tonight."
"Sure uncle," he replies, "that'd be great!"
Roli is stunned. Uncle'?!!?
Anand gives one last pat to Siddhant before he rushes off.
Siddhant looks so pleased and at ease as he takes a deep breath and turns around. He notices Roli outside Atul's cabin.

UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 22
An original story by Archana Vinod
Siddhant notices Roli wearing a stunned expression.
"Oh," he says, "you came? Didn't see you. All over?"
"Haan," she replies as she walks towards him, "do you know him?"
"Who?" he asks, "Anand Thackeray?"
"Yeah," she replies.
"Yup," he says proudly, "he's a very old friend of my father. He knows my family since a long time."
"Wow," she whistles, "now that's news. Now how does your father know Anand Thackeray?"
"Long story," he replies, "will tell you on the way."
They make their way out when Siddhant notices the packet in Roli's hand.
"What's this?" he asks curiously.
Oh no! Roli fidgets nervously, he noticed the packet! If I say that Atul gave it, what will he think?
"W-what?" Roli tries to play innocent.
"This yaar," he crinkles the packet with his fingers, "looks like something soft... is it a dress?"
"Oh!" she is nervous now, "this! This was there before na! Didn't you see it?"
"No?" he replies suspiciously, "I don't remember seeing this cover in your hand before."
"It was there yaar," she replies, "you need to pay more attention next time."
"Hey hello," he snaps, "it wasn't there, okay? I'm pukka sure!"
"Hah!" she snaps back, "are you arguing with me?"
"Arrey!" he replies, "why can't you just admit it? It wasn't there before!"
"Are you calling me a liar?" she snaps irritably.
"No," he begins, "that's not what -"
She cuts him off. "I told you it was there!" she barks, "and even if it wasn't there what's your problem?"
"No," he tries to talk, "you don't""
She cuts him off again. "I'll have so many things in my hand!" she snarls, "I might even pick couple of things on the way! Why do you have to get so worked up about it?"
"Oof!!" he lifts up his hands in defeat, "just leave it yaar! I'm sorry, okay?"
"What sorry?" she growls angrily, "tell me one thing! Who do you think you are? CBI? Police?"
"Arrey yaar!" he gets irritated.
"Why do you have to probe me so much?" she goes on, "it's as if I did something wrong!"
"Hey Bhagwaan!!!" he gasps in defeat.
"Really!" she doesn't give up, "if you don't trust me, here you are!!!"
She sticks the packet into his face. "Go on!" she shouts, "go on and check it! What if it's a bomb or something?"
"Arrey yaar," he's fed up now, "why do you have to get so angry? All what I did was ask you what it was!"
"Correction," she snaps, "you kept arguing that it wasn't there with me before!"
"Fine," he gives up, "I did. And I'm sorry. Okay?"
"Are you making fun of me??" she starts another war.
"Good Lord!" he just leaves her behind and walks back to his car, "get a life. Seriously!"
IN THE CAR
Siddhant starts the engine and waits for Roli to get in.
She is damn sulky.
"Seatbelt," he tells her sternly.
She quietly puts it on.
TECHSEARCH - MUCH LATER
The new team is hard at work already.
Phones ring endlessly.
The consultants end up on one call after the other.
Vikrant walks along the aisles with an air of pride and watches over his team. He is particularly fond of Roli. After all, she just got him huge business overnight!
"How's it going Roli?" he asks her with a broad smile.
"Fine Vikrantji," she replies, "I've lined up a candidate for 9 AM tomorrow."
"Excellent!" he beams, "good! Good! Very good!"
"I won't be interviewing them personally," she replies, "they sound pretty good on the phone. So I'm sending them over directly."
"No problem," he tells her, "just send them over and get a couple of closures fast."
He moves over to Siddhant now who gets up from his chair.
"What man Siddhant?" Vikrant pats him encouragingly over the back, "what's happening?"
"Working on the Site Manager requirement," he replies with a sheepish grin, "just stepping out for lunch."
"No worries," smiles Vikrant, "you carry on."
Roli watches Siddhant out of the corner of her eyes.
He simply walks out of the door without even one look at her.
She begins to feel guilty. He seems to be mad at me, she thinks. I shouldn't have got so mad at him before. It was absolutely unnecessary. Actually, why did I even have to get mad at him? It was almost as if I wanted to hide something... as if I'm guilty about something... but he's just a friend. What's wrong if I tell him about Atul? I think I must tell him. I'll tell him now...

UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 23
An original story by Archana Vinod
Roli is out in the afternoon sun. The mid-rise commercial building in which her office is located looms behind her.
Now where could he have gone, she wonders as she walks along the pavement. Her eyes fall on the closest restaurant - Ching's Secret'. She spots Siddhant at a table digging into his lunch.
INSIDE CHING'S SECRET
Roli walks in through the door and places her order before she heads to Siddhant's table. She gives a playful tap over his head and plops into her chair.
"Hi," she grins.
He looks up at her, surprised first, then irritated. He glowers at her for a moment before continuing with his lunch.
Roli looks around casually. The restaurant is quite empty now but lunch hour has the traffic build up slowly.
"I wanted to tell you something," she begins, "before you as""
All of a sudden, Siddhant's phone begins to RING. He answers it.
"Hello?"
A pleasant smile breaks across his face. "Haan uncle," he chuckles, "fine-fine. Got it! Yeah! I know the place! 7.30? Done! Okay bye. Bye!"
He hangs up. Roli watches him curiously.
"Anand Thackeray?" she asks.
"Hmm," he mumbles and continues with his lunch.
"Wow!" she beams, "I can't believe this! I'm so happy!!!"
Saying this, she jumps up and pulls his cheeks hard.
"Aaah!" he moans in pain and surprise, "what's wrong with you? People are watching!"
"I don't care," she giggles, "I'm so happy!!!"
"Why?" he asks, "you're going to get married or what?"
"Hahaha!" she laughs, "the irony! But no, that's not it! Imagine! Anand Thackeray! COO of the company is your relative! Very close relative! Imagine!! And not just any company! He's the COO of Shinde Group! Imagine!!!"
"Hmm," he smiles proudly.
Just then, Roli's lunch arrives. She begins to dig in.
"Achcha Siddhant," she begins, "you've never told me about your family. Are they with you now?"
"No," he replies, "not really. They're back in Delhi."
"Achcha," she replies, "so you guys are from Delhi?"
"Uh huh," he mutters.
"So Delhi is a good place na?" she asks, "what are you doing here in Ahmedabad?"
He looks hesitant at her question. "Experience," he replies, eager to end the conversation.
"Tell me one thing," she goes on, "have you really worked anywhere before?"
Siddhant looks nervous now. "Why?" he simply asks.
"Just asking," she says and watches him curiously.
He instantly looks down at his lunch and continues to eat; half hoping that she'd not probe him. To his horror, he finds her still looking at him. What she says next, horrifies him even more.
"You haven't, right?" she asks him with a mischievous smile.
He just stares into her eyes. The fire in her eyes flares wickedly at him. Why is that I feel that she can read my mind? That she can see right through me? That she knows all my secrets???
"Come on," she probes, "spit it out. You can trust me. Your secret will lie with me."
Siddhant's heart is pounding now. Hey Uparwaale, he thinks frantically, she knows. So what I feared is true, she can read my mind.
He takes a deep breath and says, "No..."
