The Shahrukh Khan starrer is loosely based on the life of former Indian goalkeeper.
You've seen the movie and loved it, now you could read all about the man on whose life 'Chak De' is based, for former hockey player and the coach of the gold-medal winning women's team in the 2002 Commonwealth games, Mir Ranjan Negi is now planning to pen his experiences.
'Chak De' is surely on its way to becoming the latest anthem of the nation. The Shahrukh Khan starrer is loosely based on the life of former Indian goalkeeper. Mir Ranjan Negi fell from grace after conceding seven goals against Pakistan in the 1982 Asian Games final, before returning to coach the national women's team to a Commonwealth gold medal in 2002. The film is clearly a hit with the masses.
Negi was at the screening of the film and is delighted at the film's success. "I am really grateful to Yashraj films for that matter, for taking up such an important issue - promoting hockey.
Though SRK's portrayal of Kabir Khan - Chak De's protagonist - is a tad different from the life of Mir Ranjan Negi - there's no denying the filmmakers were inspired from the life of this goalkeeper. And as Negi recalls - the decision to return to the sport after the humiliation of the 1982 Asiad games was difficult. "It was very sad, very sad in fact many times I thought I should commit suicide. Friends like Joaquim Carlvalho, Mon Fernandes, Pandey brothers, they brought me back into hockey."
Chak De's success has given Negi another platform to redeem his lost pride and honour - and now the former player is planning to pen the troubled chapter of his life in the form of a book. "It does give you a sense of redemption, definitely and a satisfaction that all that you were striving for has been achieved and accomplished. Then life has to go on. I have planned so many things, in fact I am coming out with my own book 'Gloom to Glory' where I have tried to analyse what exactly went wrong that day."
