I don't think it's in a crisis, but moving forward, if a lot of the 'jobless' folks want work, they will have to generate it themselves by partaking in and developing new financial models for the business of film-making. If movies aren't going on floors because the production cost is too high and therefore no one is ready to release funds for the project/has that kind of money, then they need to downsize. And I really desperately think that (a) it's downright ridiculous how much some of these movies cost (b) big budgets should be a consideration for
some movies, not
most movies. BBB was made with a small budget some years ago, and it did good business, got a good response, was appreciated, and eventually served as a spring board for the entire team (actors, writer, director) to get more work. Same with Queen this year, which was made on a small budget, got a whole lot of profit and critical acclaim, etc. The problem is that a lot of filmmakers have 'grand' plans but don't actually have content to back up the display of money in their movies. Result is that the audience checks it out for about two weeks, there is no WOM to convince/reach other people and get them to come out for viewing, so the movie naturally dies out. The goal of a lot of big productions at this point almost seems to be 'how many people can we bring into the theater before they figure out this is trash/mediocre' based on the name of a big actor, flashy visuals, one/two items songs, or exotic locales. Essentially by making these sky-high budget films which do not have solid content, they're just trying to maximize on the number of people they can dupe into coming out to theaters under a time crunch. Isn't inflation in ticket price also a result of this too? 5 people we get coming in and giving us 250 is more profitable than 5 giving 100?
Comparatively if you have fantastic content, you can make a movie out of it in a decent budget with actors (vs. trying to rope in the biggest stars), and people will come to see it, it will make a profit. So going back to the jobless actors, they either need to cut down on their fees to be part of movies (rather than adding to the weight), agree to take share from the profit (as some have already decided to), or fund their own movies/good scripts they want to get behind. Producers need to glean out content (will make money because people will get something for their time or be convinced to come out) vs. the 'big, flashy' movie tip that the industry seems to currently be on and thinks is the way to make a quick buck. If they keep at it, a lot of people will remain jobless and a lot of ideas will stay stuck in a rut...because the financial demands of some of these projects are way too high to let a lot of movies happen.
