Certainly. So if someone wants to change and be a Hindu, by following Hindu dharma, why not?

But does that include someone who is not a practicing hindu.

You mean practice 'Sanadana Darma'?😊 Which follower actuly practicing their religion..........all do just prayers......not practice...😊

The problem arises only if it is Yesudas or Sonia Gandhi or Mercy Ravi.

Tantris do prashnam and shuddhi only if famous personalities enter the premise. What about so many unknown people disrupting the sanctity?

Maya, I will disagree with u on this, its not just for famous personalities, but it is for all those who the temple authorities know or come to know to be non hindus.

There is a big board put outside the temple and on the walls as u enter, that entry is only meant for hindus. Yet, if a non hindu enters and goes unnoticed, then one cant do anything. But where one is aware that the devotee is a non hindu, then they take precaution to take curative steps.

Long time back, when I was very young, I remember going to Guruvayoor with my parents, when we went to the temple, we found it shut and we were told that the previous day, there was some devotee who was found within the temple premises who was admittedly a practicing Christian. The temple was closed the next day for the purification process. The devotee was not a famous personality.

On prashams, I believe in it.

Isnt there a contradiction here? If Hinduism is a way of life, it is a practice.

Some places womens not allow to pray in mousque......wheres our ministors and other cultural people to talk about this?other Marriage registraction act, matter why some are against cos their religion allow to marry 3,4 time?? so they dont want to register...??😳

Believe, I am strictly arguing about the main topic. The things you mentioned is something to ponder on and discussed when we talk about religious inequality and uniform civil code. Here the ritual followed by this temple is not a retaliation on other religion.

Priya, By famous personalities I meant the ones Temple authorities come to know. I cited names of famous personalities because it is easier to identify.

My main question here is isn't temple's purity affected by those who fool authorities? Is the policy 'what you don't know won't hurt you' applicable here when this whole sanctity issue is taken so seriously?

Actually after posing tthis question I remember something I read about Guruvayoor losing the purity because of this and devaswom was planning about doing a mass-shudhi which would cost crores and right then this Sabarimala issue came to limelight.

..I may be going off the topic...but this is one of my hugest pet peeves....Who the heck authorized the frigging govt to interfere in the administration and governance of temples? In Kerala we have to witness the travesty of a true blue atheist communist minister sudhakaran who is put in charge of the Devasom, the govt board that governs temples. How in the name of anything holy can a professed non-believer even begin to gauge the sentiments and wishes of millions of believers???? Why doesnt the govt interfere in the running and rules and laws of mosques, churches and gurudwaras?

To come back to the topic when i was visiting Malaysia and wanted to enter a mosque there I was forced to don a burqa sort of costume over my very modest trousers and shirt... i did it because i believe that the rules of any religious institution area sacrosanct. I do think that the laws forbidding the entry of other religions into Guruvayoor is mainly because they may not be aware of Hindu traditions and customs.....

btw the great singer Yesudas has never made a big issue of not being allowed into the temple...

Maya, every temple, be it guruvayoor or any other, perform a shudhi puja regularly, either every day, or every week or so.

I do not know the details of it, but shall find out and let you know soon.

I remember asking this question to a religious scholar some years back and I can write here the answer he gave me.

God resides in all of us, so does that not make us automatically pure? Yet, we cleanse ourselves everyday, physically and mentally, through ablutions and prayers. Some days, we offer more pujas and perform more ablutions, than the regular days. Some day, we go to the house of a deceased person, or we come in contact with an animal or some undesirable element, we physically cleanse ourselves more than normal days.

Shudhi is akin to that. If our body is the temple of the God, we cleanse it every day, similarly, they perform a shudhikaran in the temple everyday. But there are days when there is a need to do a bigger prayer or a higher shudhikaran.

He gave many more examples, but the basic meaning was this.

A question came to my mind, the same God who made us and who lives in us, also lives in the other person. So can u perform shudhi against the same god?

I admit this question plagues the mind often....... I am as much a stickler to rules as I am to breaking the rule and this is one of those situations where I prefer to stick to rules than break them.

Thanks for the wonderful points raised in the debate, did give me a chance to go revisit some old memories and some old teachings which I hadnt gone back to in sometime.

@greatmaratha: Priya, It is always nice exchanging views with you. Whenever I visit Kerala these kind questions crop in because I also visit many temples in other states and then I question about the practises in Kerala temples. They might be having the reasons for doing so but the corruption in devaswom boards in the worst.

I'ven't seen the posts of GM ji and Maya ji...will see them as soon I get some time..😊

I somehow feel bad for the temple authorities of Kerala....Reason....they have some rules framed several years ago....some them which need not be modified and some need not be questioned as the rules are not fatal...

Why is the govt poking into the affairs of the temples ? If they say its in the interest of common janta..the onlyjanta who like the rules will go there ,others who are not bothered to follow the rules..need not go there...

How can a communist know the beauty of a religion and its temples.....?
