They weren't told when the batteries would get a chance to recharge and he might've done it in hopes of winning some brownie points by doing a good deed for the HMs! He has been called out for playing safe and trying to be in the good books of the HMs which might've made him take that decision and he saved Dimpy from nominations as well so he is thinking on a different tangent about the game!
