Sanyukta composed herself as she noticed Randhir walking towards her.
" Girlfriend?" she faked a smile.
" No...umm..fiance." he replied without meeting her eyes.
"Ohh. Congrats." She felt a tinging sensation in her eyes. Sanyukta mentally cursed herself for being such an emotional fool. Just because she did not find her happiness away from him, didnot mean situations will be same on the other side.
Fate never favoured them. At times it was their ego, at others it was their family. And she realised what Randhir meant to her a bit too late. But being the strong woman that she was, she tried her best to move on. And she thought she did. Even after getting in and out of a loveless marriage, she never thought that one day, the hollow inside her that she was burrying so skillfully, will be unearthed again.
"Thank you." Randhir's reply pulled her out of her train of thoughts. " And what about you? Umm...Married?" he felt a little anxious, as he waited for her to reply.
" Just went through my divorce, changed job and countries, and here I am." She smiled.
"Oh. I am sorry-" he tried to chip in, still trying to process what she had just said.
" Don't be. I don't regret what happened." She flashed a smile.
He smiled back. He didnot know what exactly he was feeling on hearing the fact that Sanyukta not with anyone, but somewhere he didnot want to know. Ignorance is a bliss.' He had read in a book.
They indulged in a warm conversation again which mainly circled around life in Newyork city. They got so involved that they didnot notice a pair of stillettoes clatter into the room.
"Ron, I have been waiting in my car for the past 15 minutes. What the hell are you doing here?" Aisha's sharp voice made Randhir stop the conversation. " And what is wrong with your cellphone? I have called like 7 times! Why did you not pick it up?" she huffed.
Randhir excused himself and got up from his chair and pulled Aisha out of his cabin.
"Can you stop shouting in the office? Have some decency Aisha." Randhir growled.
"If you want me to behave, you should listen to me too. I don't understand what's up with you. We are going to get married. And you should spend more time with me. Not with your staff." She snorted.
"Listen, Aisha. I tried telling you over the phone too, I am with someone important. And I cannot come with you now."
"Important?" Aisha cocked up her eyebrows. "That girl inside didnot look like some important client to me." She squinted her eyes.
Randhir sighed. He knew where this was going.
" Okay, Aisha. Go wait for me in the car. I will come in 15 minutes." He chipped as he walked inside the cabin.
" Sanyukta I am so sorry, I have to go somewhere now. Sorry to keep you waiting." He smiled apologetically.
"No its perfectly fine Randhir. I have to resume my work anyways." She smiled and walked out of the cabin , only to bump with Aisha.
" Oh- I am so sorry" quipped Sanyukta.
Aisha scanned Sanyukta from head to toe. And satisfied her womanly instincts by concluding that the woman standing infront of her was nothing more than a under-dressed simpleton, and her fiance will not spare a second look to such women.
" No, its alright." She smiled at Sanyukta.
This surprised Sanyukta a bit. From whatever Stacy had said, Sanyukta had expected Aisha to eat anyone alive who dared to breathe in her presence. But on the contrary, she seemed quite nice.Sanyukta smiled back and walked into her cabin to resume her work.
After completing her file she thought of heading back home once she passed on the file to Stacy. While walking down the corridor to Stacy, she passed through Randhir's cabin. But some muffled voices made her stop on the path.
" I thought Randhir and Aisha were out shopping." She said to herself.
Out of sheer curiosity, she cracked oped the door a bit. And what she saw broke her heart to thousand pieces. Aisha was sitting on Randhir's lap , her arms around his shoulders. Sanyukta couldnot see Randhir's face as his back was towards her. But she didnot need to see anything more anyways. She got out of there as fast as possible as her vision got blurred by her tears.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in Randhir's cabin.
Randhir's irritation reached its peak as he pushed Aisha off from his lap. Aisha stared at him with a baffled expression. Randhir stared back, the irritated expression never leaving his face even once.
" What's up with you, Randhir?" Aisha gritted her teeth.
" You tell me, Aisha." Randhir smoothed the wrinkles of his peach-colored shirt and straightened his tie. " It's my office Aisha. I am the CEO here and people work under me. You cannot just jump into my lap while I am working." He shook his head disapprovingly.
" Okay. This is our office. But what about in our bedroom?" Aisha huffed " You have not kissed me once. Let alone making love. It is always me who kisses you first and you hardly respond." Aisha was near tears now.
Randhir felt bad for her. She was right. Randhir was not giving her anything that a girl would naturally expect from a partner. She deserved more.
Randhir rushed to a sobbing Aisha. She wrapped her arms around Randhir who seemed to be in some deep thought. Randhir was actually making a mental note to talk to his mother regarding his relationship with Aisha. For the sake of his and Aisha's happiness, Randhir had decided to break up from her.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanyukta's tears were not stopping. She was sad because of what she had witnessed earlier that day. But more than sad, she was angry. Angry at herself for behaving so irrationally, angry because she was deep down in her heart , expecting things that were obviousy impossible. She was angry because she didnot make Randhir her own when destiny had given her the chance. She was angry because fate had brought them together again when the one thing she wanted was a fresh start in life.
Sanyukta changed into her tee and PJs and shifted about the furniture a bit. She poured herself a bowl of milk with cornflakes but felt too sick to eat anything. Her head was throbbing so she decided to call it a night earlier that usual.
She had gone through too much stress for the first day in office and decided to keep a low profile from the next day. Strict work-only relationships with Randhir, nothing else. She was thinking about all this and didnot realise when she drifted away to sleep.
She had weird dreams that night, filled with Randhir , Aisha, her ex-husband, FITE and her mother.
