Episode 7: The Making of Kabir
In Bandra Hospital, Inspector Raina was taken into the emergency room by the other officers. At the same time, Officer Rahat was being taken in for his injuries as well. Inspector Raina laid in the emergency room, her wound on her arm wrapped and taken cared of with great care. As she laid down, ACP Kamal and Officer Aayat entered the room. Inspector Raina looked up at them as they came towards her. "How are you feeling, Raina?" Officer Aayat asked.
"A little drowsy. But I'm fine." Inspector Raina replied.
"Thank God you're fine, otherwise who knows what could have happened." ACP Kamal replied.
"I apologize, sir. I failed in capturing the killers." Inspector Raina apologized.
"Don't apologize, Raina! You tried your best," ACP Kamal said. "Just focus on getting better. Then you can worry about those criminals later."
"They're not just ordinary criminals, sir. Especially that boy. I underestimated him," Inspector Raina said. "He had the face of an innocent boy, but he lashed at me like it was nothing. It won't be easy to catch such a guy. But now...he doesn't realize who he's dealing with."
On the road, Kabir and Damini were riding along on Kabir's bike. They stopped the bike near a bench. They got off and sat down on the bench, where Damini opened the bag she carried. She revealed the contents of the bag which were stacks of money and various jewels such as diamonds, rubies, and even gold. "We hit the jackpot today. But credit mostly goes to you." Damini told Kabir.
"Its nothing really."
"Nothing?! You took down that police officer like a professional!"
"So?"
"I'm impressed. And its never easy to impress Damini," Damini said. "But still...I fail to understand you."
"Why is that?" Kabir asked.
"You're a mystery. One moment you seem like an ingenuous soul. The next thing you know you're a hardcore killer," Damini explained. "Two in one. The combination is deadly itself. But how it became like that...I want to know."
Kabir stood up from the bench, stirred in thoughts. Damini looked at him and said, "If you don't want to talk about it, then don't. Who am I to ask you?"
Kabir stood near a tree, putting his hand right on it. No one's ever asked me about my past. And out of all the people, this woman asks. But how will anyone know what its like...unless I say something, Kabir thought to himself. Then...I might as well go ahead.
"I'll tell you." Kabir said. Damini turned to Kabir, surprised. He'll tell? This should be interesting, Damini thought to herself as she simpered.
"There was a time when I was completely innocent. That time was when I was a little boy," Kabir began. "At that time, I was playful. Especially with my mother. Even my father loved me dearly. I was the joy that they had. And together, we had created our own small world. A world where there was only happiness and nothing else."
Oh God! He's talking as if this is some film narration I asked for! Damini rolled her eyes.
"But one day changed everything." Kabir said.
"What?" Damini asked.
"I was seven years old. A group of men came to our home, begging us for food. My father was gladly ready to offer. But that's when we were tricked. The men barged into our home," Kabir continued. "My mother made me hide behind the couch. And that's when I last heard my mother's voice. A scream. She and my father were brutally shot and beaten till their deaths. And I was helpless. I was only a little boy. I could do nothing but cry and hide. The men robbed our home and left. And all I could do was weep over the dead bodies of my parents."
Kabir began to shed tears as he paused in his narration. Damini looked at him, shocked and surprised. He's crying? I've never seen the tears of a man before, Damini thought to herself. And even I have never committed such a brutal murder.
"Then what?" Damini asked.
Kabir wiped the tears off his face. "I was forced to wander onto the streets alone. That itself was difficult. Late at night one day, I bumped into a gang of alcoholics. They tried to kidnap me. I ran from them as fast as I could. By the time they got to me, I thought I was finished," Kabir narrated. "And that's when I heard the sounds of gunfire. That moment...was the first time I met Raja bhai. He had killed those men in a matter of seconds. I was intimidated upon seeing him. He was a tall, robust man. He held onto the trigger like a bounty hunter. He came towards me while I stood in fear. I still remember the one word he said...come. I didn't know what it was that made me go along with him. Was it because he saved my life? Or because I was all alone and I needed someone? I don't know."
"So you went with him?" Damini asked.
"Yes," Kabir replied. "He took me to the small house he lived in at that time. From there I learned how much he was used to the rowdiness of the town. I told him everything that had happened to me. And from there, he encouraged me into revenge. I would have never thought about it. But under Raja bhai, I learned that you can't let those who hurt you escape. A bigger punishment was needed for them. So a day came where I came to the den of these men along with Raja. And right there, I shot each one of those men till the last bullet was fired. I looked at their corpses, satisfied. That made Raja bhai see something in me. Then the words he said, stayed by me always. He said 'Survive to kill. Kill to survive'. Then I knew, what my purpose was. That if one wants to stay alive in this world, he must take down anyone who gets in his way. And all this I can do for Raja bhai, and only for him. Not only did he take me in, but he also trained me into what I am today. Had it not been for him, I could have died right at childhood. His guidance changed me forever."
Damini was left speechless. She stood from the bench and went towards Kabir, slowly. "So that's it," Damini said. "You look innocent, but inside that innocence has been robbed. And you use it to mask your true self. All that street smartness came from Raja. Because you do all this for him and to survive in this big world."
Kabir turned around to Damini. "Am I right?" Damini asked.
"Every killer has a purpose. You have one yourself. You want to get rid of men one by one. You've done it many times," Kabir said. "I just want to survive. And I can...if I just do what Raja bhai says. He knows best. If he didn't, I'd be dead by now. Whatever pleases him pleases me. That's all that matters."
With that, Kabir kept silent while Damini continued to look at him. "I'm going to go for a walk. Stay here. I'll be back." Kabir said. With that, Kabir left in the other direction, walking down the road while Damini looked on. She gave a small grin. Interesting. A boy who will do anything for the man who made him who he is. Rarely have I seen such respect in a boy for someone. Impressive, Damini thought to herself. But this boy doesn't know what he's in for. Raja may mean a lot to him. But for Raja, he's nothing but a mere puppet. Play with it for a while...and then drop it on the floor with no support left.
