safai to tum logo ne de di but phir aap humari rai maang rahi hai to khushi se lo, i think a teenager until 18 should focus on other things, there are many other things teenagers need to explore for themselves than being on net especially when they are in school, that doesnt mean they should be banned from using net, few hours under parents supervision is ok, teenage years are one of those fragile stages for a kid and they constantly need space and guidance, that doesnt mean that the parents should be on their shoulders, once a kid passes the teenage years, he/she is entering into the world of reality which is getting out of home, living in hostels etc. so parents supervision is not needed as much as before becoz the kid is trying to be independent then after 21, the kid is independent to make their own judgements, no parents supervision, parents should let the kids go, they can advice but not order so if the kid is using net or not, it shouldnt be parents concern anymore, they can however advice 😉

I would say 16 as by that time they have been exposed to all the norms and are getting ready for Univ. Kids are very smart these days and they know right from wrong by the time they are 15 or so.

I just wish to add that it is not just the kids that are exposed to a bad experience sometimes on the internet as this can happen to an adult too. However 16 to me is the right age to be exposed to these activities. 😛

16 is a Junior in HS In America age...how Univ.?

For me, age should be 14+ for kids who have knowledge of the things on the internet, and know how to avoid them...
16+ for kids who know about internet stuff [or don't] and know how to avoid them...

I joined when I was 14...I'm still alive😆

Not to be stubborn to the point of perversity on this topic, but the net is now merely yet another portal through which a predator can stalk its prey. If you recall, there was a true-to-life article relating a story in which a person sitting miles away tracked a young girl down through inoccuous information, tid-bits that don't amount to much on their own, but together gave the picture of where she lived, what she did, etc. That person then travelled to physically stalk her. Fortunately, this was a test case and the "stalker" was a cop demonstrating the vulnerability the situation raised. My caution and weariness in having youngsters join in comes from personal experience. Bitter lessons that taught me well and make me want to safeguard all the younger ones.

I believe Javs brought the point up .. it's true that the teenage population is exposed to much more in life at an earlier age and faster rate today. That does not imply faster maturing however. In fact, a lack of proper education on behalf of schools - public education glosses over the realities - and parental input - many are either uncomfortable discussing the realities, ignorant of changing realities, or otherwise don't take the time to educate their children - only serves to further retard maturation of children these days.
Life is presented as sugar-coated to the kids and then they are made to step out and swallow a bitter pill. The realities are thrown at them from left and right with little or no information, certainly very little accurate information. What one takes from it and understands of it is very individual, but the population as a whole is largely ignorant and incapable of properly dealing with it all.

Add to that RL mess a (un)healthy dose of the pitfalls, trap doors, tangled webs and never-ending mazes of the net world. Even a community such as IF, a monitored, well-moderated and some-what regulated site, is made of lakhs of members - even IF has not escaped the bad and ugly of the net world. If you haven't come across that, it's your luck and good fortune.

I do see where you are coming from Simi and your concerns are indeed genuine!
As much as I agree with you, the fact remains that the kids do get on forums and things like Orkut, Myspace at quite an early age. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my friend's brother is 10 and he is on Orkut and there are many such cases. One of his testimonials is by his friend which says, "He is a very sexy boy." Not that I have any qualms about the word usage, but I am quite sure that he did not know what he meant. So, I do agree that net exposure is the last thing that kids of today need.

But chaho ya na chaho, kids are everywhere. My brother is 11 and all his friends are apparently on Orkut. My mom-dad keep telling him no but then, it is not too hard to open up a a/c and not tell anyone, isn't it? By putting too many restraints, you are teaching the child to lie and hide things. And, that is my major concern. I would rather have my kids do something within my knowledge than do something in the wrong manner behind my back. As Javs said, better teach them pros and cons instead of stopping them from doing something that all their friends are doing!

And lol@ you being an aunty.. Thank God! I am a year younger than you, varna mein bhi us group me aa jati 😛
