Arti's cameo with SRK

DNA-After hours

Sunday, February 11, 2007

It may come as a surprise to several on the social circuit — Arti Surendranath, the model-turned-actor-turned filmmaker, has made an acting comeback of sorts. The line producer of the Angelina Jolie starrer 'A Mighty Heart' will soon be seen in Farah Khan's 'Om Shanti Om' with ShahRukh Khan.

"Farah and I met at a party and she told me that I would have to do a small but significant role in her film. I thought she was joking and laughed it off, and even told her that she should find someone else for the role. But she insisted on me and I had to give in," laughs Arti. "I've faced the camera many years ago, but I was never a big star," she adds.

'Om Shanti Om' is Farah's second directorial venture and is said to be based on reincarnation. Arti plays a cinema host, something she's naturally good at. "It's an important and interesting scene. Shah Rukh comes to a film premiere that happens in the '70s. I am the host at the function and I introduce and take everyone around," reveals Arti, whose look was styled by Sanjeev Mulchandani and make-up artistes Dorris and Bharat Godambe. "I wear a sari with pearls and have also donned curls in the look," she adds.

Acting opposite Shah Rukh is an opportunity very few would let go. "What was amazing about Shah Rukh is that you can't miss his dedication and energy. It was refreshing to see an actor of his stature be so absorbed in his work," she says.

Malaika Arora plays a superwoman

09th Feb 2007 20.30 IST
By ApunKaChoice

Gorgeous Malaika Arora will be seen in a very unusual role in Farah Khan's forthcoming film Om Shanti Om .

Malaika, who hasn't been much in action on the silver screen of late, was approached by Shah Rukh Khan for 'Om Shanti Om', which is produced by SRK's company Red Chillies Entertainment.

In the movie, Malaika plays a superwoman who dresses up in a snazzy red gown and keeps hopping from rooftop to rooftop. Malaika says her character is "sweet and funny".

While it is still not known whether Malaika charged any remuneration for her role in the film, she did get a gift hamper from Shah Rukh after her work was over. The hamper reportedly contained flowers, a Tag Heuer watch and a cell phone.

Recently, Malaika also appeared on KBC 3 along with her hubby Arbaaz Khan . The couple reportedly won 12.50 lakh rupees after which they decided to hug their host goodbye.

SRK gifts Tag, cell phone to Malaika

Malaika Arora

Knowing Shah Rukh Khan has its perks. Who knows that better than Malaika Arora? Recently, she appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 and even shot for a small role in Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, produced by SRK's company Red Chillies Entertainment. As a token of his appreciation, SRK sent her a bag of goodies.

Goodie bag

Says Malaika, "Shah Rukh approached me for the role in Om Shanti Om. He said it's sweet and funny and something I haven't done before. She's a superhero kind of a character, clad in a red gown and flying off rooftops, something like Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit but with a twist!"

Apparently, she did the role for free. Says Malaika, "I did it for Farah, who's a very dear friend. If she asks me to stand upside down for her, I will. I have never had so much fun playing a character before."

But Shah Rukh and Farah know how to repay their friends in style.

Recently, Malaika was pleasantly surprised to get a hamper from the Red Chillies unit – cards from the crew, flowers, a Tag Heuer watch and cell phone.

Laughing, Malaika says, "They thought I needed a new phone desperately, that's why they got me one. It's always a pleasure to work with Red Chillies. They give the smallest, personalised touches to everything. It makes all the difference."

Malaika says that SRK, Gauri and Farah are all very close to her. "That's why I felt so at home when Arbaaz and I met all of them on the KBC3 show."

Finger play

Arbaaz and Malaika won Rs 12.50 lakh on the show, which they donated to their favourite charity — St Anthony's Home For The Aged in Bandra.

When we ask her who was the better player, she says, "We were both equally good, but Arbaaz had an edge. We both love playing board games like Trivial Pursuit and Articulate so we are used to it, but initially, I was slightly nervous.

Sitting in front of Shah Rukh is a nerve-wracking experience but also great fun. Karan and Farah were making us laugh a lot by making cracks at each other. The only time I fumbled was during the fastest finger slot, but there too Arbaaz beat all of us. It was a question on cricket and he knew the answer."

Shakira to do an item number in Om Shanti Om,

That our very own Farah Khan choreographed Shakira at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards is pretty old news by now.

The Hips don't lie Latin superstar brought the house down at the New York event on Thursday night, and is reportedly very, very impressed by Khan's work.

So taken in by the Indian styling, is the Colombian singer-songwriter that she plans to incorporate Khan's trademark 'Bollywoody' moves in her next music video.

Fox News reported Farah Khan as saying, "Shakira is so impressed with the classical and semi-classical mudras (dance steps) I made her do for the song she performed at the MTV awards that she expressed a desire to work with me."

"She is definitely clued into Bollywood dance and wants me to incorporate it in her next music video, which she wants me to direct for her."

The superstar is known for her uniquely hip-driven dance styling -- a high-energy variant of traditional belly dancing, something she learnt as part of her Lebanese heritage.

Khan plans to take the association with Shakira a step further.

Fox News goes on to say that the choreographer-director is trying to get Shakira to do an item number in her next film, Om Shanti Om, starring ShahRukh Khan. Now that's something worth watching out for.

Shakira is currently on her biggest tour ever, The Oral Fixation Tour, and this is expected to last until Summer 2007. Outside her music, her personal life continues to make headlines constantly, as she has been dating Antonio de la Rua (son of Argentinian President Fernando de la Rua) since 2000. They remain engaged despite front-page controversy across Argentina, with no marriage plans announced.

All this and two Grammy awards (plus three Latin Grammies) with a body that really does not look 29. Wow.

Sneak Preview: Om Shanti Om(OSO)

Producer: Red Chillies Entertainment
Director: Farah Khan
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, and Malaika Arora Khan
Music: Vishal-Shekhar
Lyrics:
By: Samir Dave

Credit must be given to Farah Khan for going with the nostalgia evoking title, "Om Shanti Om" for her second directorial venture. The first thing that comes to mind upon hearing that title is an image of Rishi Kapoor dancing on a giant spinning record trying not to trip on his wide bell bottom pants in Shubhash Ghai's "Karz". That classic tale of reincarnation and a killer in the form of Simi Garewal has been burned into the collective memory of any Indian who grew up during that time.

Going for the built in intrinsic nostalgic value of the title, Farah Khan has chosen a reincarnation theme for her second film. The story centers on an artist who grows up in the seventies (perhaps watching Karz), meets the love of his life and shortly thereafter suffers an untimely demise. He is immediately reincarnated and the story flash-forwards to the present day.
Haunted by the memories of his past life and love, he attempts to not only solve the mystery of his death, but also reunite with the love of his past life.

The movie is apparently "inspired" by the Hollywood movie, "Chances Are" wherein a man is reincarnated and immediately attempts to find the wife from his previous life. The problem is that she is now much older than him and does not believe that he is the reincarnation of the man she once loved.
The music for the film was to have been composed by A.R. Rahman, but he wanted 33 percent of the music rights/profits, so T-Series balked and ended their discussions with him. Instead, the music baton was handed to maestros Vishal-Shekhar (Dus, Honeymoon Private LTD, Bluffmaster). The addition of these two-music directors will be a bonus as it adds to the anticipation of this follow-up project to Main Hoon Na (Farah Khan's directorial debut). One does wonder, why Farah did not go with Anu Malik this time, as his soundtrack to Main Hoon Na was a blockbuster. Still, we are guaranteed a fresh sounding soundtrack with Vishal-Shekhar and hopefully no reincarnated music. The master poet Gulzar will write lyrics.

Special mention must be made that Farah's husband Shirish Kunder (director of Jaan E Mann) will be handling the editing on this movie as he did on Main Hoon Na. Also, apparently Skakira, who is a big fan of SRK and is acquainted with Farah as a choreographer, is in talks to make an appearance.

The movie features Shah Rukh Khan as the lead and introduces supermodel Deepika Padukone as the main love interest. The supporting cast includes Arjun Rampal (Don) and Shreyas Talpade (Iqbal, Dor). Both SRK and Deepika Padukone are getting rave reviews for their performances in the dailies. The actor to watch out for though, is the talented Shreyas Talpade.

One can expect that the movie will be in the same tone as Main Hoon Na, and will be a light hearted romp with excellent music. Only time will tell whether this reincarnated movie will please the movie going audience. With the talent involved, expectations are running high that this movie won't be a reincarnated bomb, but rather a reincarnated hit ala Main Hoon Na.

Subhash Ghai and Rishi Kapoor in Om Shanti Om

By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 23, 2007 - 03:23 IST

Farah Khan is busy shooting Om Shanti Om, her second directorial venture after Main Hoon Na starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in principal roles. Recently Shreyas Talpade and Malaika Arora were added to the cast. And the cast of film is just growing bigger by the day.

Since the time the film was announced, there was a buzz that it is a remake of Subhash Ghai's Karz which starred Rishi Kapoor in lead role. The rumours originated from the fact that the title of the film 'Om Shanti Om' was a chartbuster song picturized on Rishi Kapoor in Subhash Ghai's Karz.

Also both the films are based on the theme of reincarnation. However Farah completely denies the rumours saying, "I am tired of shouting over the rooftops that my film Om Shanti Om is not a remake of Karz. Unless and until I am exhausted mentally and intellectually I will not remake a film. I have stories to tell and I want to do just that."

And now she has got both Rishi Kapoor and Subhash Ghai to feature in her film in cameos. The two have also agreed to do the film. A well placed source also confirms that Rishi Kapoor and Subhash Ghai will be playing themselves in the film. "Om Shanti Om is basically set around the Hindi film industry. So you will see many film personalities making a special appearance in the film playing themselves."

Farah adds, "The first half of Om Shanti Om is set in the 1970's so we have decided to recreate that era through a song". If word is to be believed then the song will possibly be sung by Sadhana Sargam and Abhijeet. And since the film is based on the theme of reincarnation, the second half will show the current Bollywood scenario.

The source also gives a gist of SRK's character in the film saying, "Om Shanti Om starts showing Shah Rukh Khan as a junior artist of the late 70's. His name is Om. Years later he is reborn and is named Om again". This is the second time when Shah Rukh will be featuring in a reincarnation theme film after the blockbuster hit Karan Arjun. And just to set the record straight, 'Om Shanti Om' has no resemblance to that movie either.

Farah confirms that since Om Shanti Om revolves around Bollywood, the film will have cameos by many known names in the industry. And since it shows the Bollywood scene in the 70s as well as today, you might just come across celebrities from both eras making an appearance in the film. In fact, Farah also adds that her husband and filmmaker Shirish Kunder will also be seen in the title credits of the film.
