Panchaali I'm tired reading and typing.šŸ˜† As I read, I found some variations in the story of Vrinda. We can roughly categories them into two- first one in which she is not a devotee of Vishnu and second one associated to Tulasi devi in which she is his devotee. These are the main points I came across.

1. Rather than Shaiva puranas (Shiva, Linga, Skanda and Agni) it is Vaishnava puranas (Padma, Vishnu etc) give more importance to Jalandhara. This might be due to the association with Vrinda.

2. Vaishnava books clearly say JD was a good ruler, but he was greedy.

3. JD had no foster mother as shown in DKDM. Neither Indra attacked him or his mother anytime. That seems to be a story narrated to create sympathy about him. In fact, Indra never interferes with JD. It is always the reverse.

5. Most books doesn't mention JD as an asura.

6. It is Shukra acharya who makes use of JD's weakness about the best things and always tricks JD to fight against others.

7. Books describing Vrinda (except the ones about Tulasi mahatmya) don't mention her as a devotee of Vishnu.

8. I did not come across a book saying Vishnu himself decided to betray Vrinda. In most books it is the order of Parvati and in a few it is said by Garuda who carried the message from Parvati. Anyhow, in all books, it is clearly said that that was the only way left for Vishnu to protect Parvati.

9. In every book, it is clearly said how Vrinda wanders in forests searching JD and how Vishnu tricks her. All books clearly say Vishnu tricks her only after she believes her husband is dead. This is confusing as why Vrinda accepted Vishnu/fake Jalandhara when she already saw his delusive powers. (Vrinda witnesses Vishnu's delusive powers in forest while she was searching for JD). DKDM has shown that fake JD returns from war to palace saying he won and Vrinda gladly accepts him. But this is nowhere described in books.

10. In half of the books, Tulasi is said to have born from Gauri, not from Vrinda.

11. In books giving importance to Tulasi describe Tulasi as Vishnu's wife and an expansion of Lakshmi. Tulasi was cursed (but not told by whom or for what) to be born as a human. Thus she takes birth as Vrinda and marries JD. She remains as a devotee of Vishnu and after her death she joins her husband (Vishnu) in Vaikuntha.

12. In most versions Vrinda curses Vishnu to become separated from his wife.

13. In some versions Vrinda curses Vishnu to become a stone and she herself takes birth as a holy river after death. This is River Gandaki and the stone is Salagrama!

14. Whatever may be the version, the story ends describing the importance of Tulasi and its worship.

Thus comes an end to the stories.šŸ˜†

Edit- Let me tell these are not my views.

Exactly this is where I'm pointing to.šŸ‘ It takes just a second for Parvati to burn Jalandhara alive. Then why did she instruct Vishnu to wrong Vrinda? This alone proves the whole story of Vrinda is fake. When you wrote the part I made bold above, what on earth that makes you think Vishnu could cheat his devotees? Has he ever cheated you?šŸ˜†

as the lust for Parvati is just lack of consistency in part of JD .. Parvati's instruction to Vishnu is the biggest inconsistency of Purana ..

so is the inconsistency regarding Vishnu cheating Vrinda. You can understand the one you like, but why not the other one? Why to discriminate between Parvati and Vishnu?šŸ˜†

considering the character of Parvati - the mother God, this part is what I will say classic example of blamming a woman to whitewash men or rather say Gods .. like Drraupadi was blamed for Kurukshetra or Helen was blamed for Troy .. while everything was only about POLITICS

If you read Devi Bhagavatam, it is clearly said the mother Goddess has no gender. The universal mother is neither a male, nor a female, nor of any other gender. The mother is called as mother only because it is from that point the world originates. In that aspect the God is called as mother, not because for having a womb like humans do. The mother appears as a female only because Brahma deva requests her to.
So is Vishnu. Vedas clearly describes Vishnu as neither a male, nor a female nor having any gender. So what is the point of your above words? Draupadi and Helen were humans. We cannot compare them with mata Parvati.

However, even if we count Parvati's said those things .. does it justify what Vishnu did ?? Just becoz Parvati said so Vishnu went to flaw his devotee's chastity .. does it make any sense ??

Of course not. This is the whole point of this story. How can we accept Parvati (who is a mother, a daughter, in the form of a woman, residing in every woman) herself can ask to do such a mean thing? At least I don't believe so. Hence I don't believe the story of Vrinda. It makes no sense that Vishnu could betray someone.

If we closely read, the story of Vrinda is narrated only to make everyone understand the importance of Tulasi plant. Medicinally, this small plant has immense power to cure almost all diseases especially respiratory disorders, cardiac diseases, skin disorders and poisons. If you just daily get the wind passing through Tulasi, you'll never be affected with any respiratory diseases. But in olden days who would believe if simply someone said the importance of this weed like small plant growing everywhere? So our intelligent ancestors, instead of explaining its medicinal values, narrated a beautiful story connecting Parvati, Shiva, Vishnu and Tulasi and made it custom to worship this plant. In spite of all variations in stories, they all ultimately point only to the importance of worshipping Tulasi daily. Daily worshipping Tulasi means you dialy get to breath the air floating around it. This is why Tulasi is counted foremost among flowers to worship God though it is not a flower. I guess I don't need to explain further. It is always in the eyes of the one who reads to read what he wants.šŸ˜†

The line in color .. there is nothing to do with my linking it is all about character study ..

Parvati's character get a huge jump here but it doesn't happen in case of Vishnu

As Raghu said Vishnu is synonymous to treachery.. okk let me explain how I find Vishnu's act convincing

1. His action to Mahabali .. he literally tricked him to go back to Pataal (Sounth??).. Mahabali was a great devotee of Vishnu
2. Mohini's act after Samudra Manthan .. It is clear that he/she had no intention to give the elixir to the asuras .. where Lord Shiva is mostly imperial to Devas n Asuras but Vishnu is not
3. Lets see his Avatars

Rama- He allowed his brother to kill Indrajeet by treachery .. [personally I found this was the worst killing in epics even worse than the way Karna was killed .. at least Karna was in war field]

Krishna- The less is said, the betteršŸ˜†

Anyway I don't want to hurt your believe .. that's why I didn't say that I hate him or something like that, I said I can't see God in his deity .. Hinduism gives us freedom of painting God the way we want .. my God doesn't take shape of Vishnu any more .. I hope I have explained what I wanna say n my words didn't hurt you ..
